Somehow, the language indicator / keyboard layout switcher on my cinnamon panel has disappeared. This happens to me once in a while, and I'm used to having to logout and start a new session. But - can I restart it somehow?

I'm using Devuan GNU/Linux Chimaera (~= Debian Bullseye without systemd), with two input languages, English and Hebrew. Will provide additional information as requested...

  • To reset Cinnamon, press Alt+F2, then press "r" and "ENTER". Commented Apr 13, 2022 at 19:47
  • @ajgringo619: That worked, but didn't help. That is, Cinnamon restarted, but the keyboard layout selector is not back. Commented Apr 13, 2022 at 20:23
  • Every once in a blue moon, I have to remove then re-add one of my applets (usually the timer). This may be your only option, outside of a full restart. Commented Apr 13, 2022 at 21:33

I can add/remove it on EndeavourOS (Arch-based) without a problem. Can't tell you why yours doesn't allow it. Commented Apr 13, 2022 at 22:17

It happens to me on a regular basis. I used to also log out/in to get the swither back. Then i found a workaround: open keyboard settings, navigate to layouts, add any to your current layouts and remove it again. Voilà, the switcher works again. It is all stupid, but it works. This is likely due to a bug with Cinnamon - not a setting which hides the indicator... which is why you can't just tell Cinnamon to make the keyboard layout indicator appear again, directly.

But - the bug has a workaround:

  • Run Cinnamon's launcher search box, type "Keyboard"
  • Choose the single app named "Keyboard" and nothing elsestart-menu).
  • At the top of the window, press "Layouts"
  • You'll see a list of layouts; press the '+' button at the bottom to add a new layout.
  • Select a layout you don't already have on the list, and confirm to exit the sub-dialog.
  • At this point, the layout indicator should re-appear on the task bar!
  • Select the layout you just added, in the list
  • Press the '-' button to remove it

Here's a screenshot of the Keyboard settings window with "Layouts" selected:
