I have a problem with my wired ethernet connection on a Dell Inspiron 5593 with Ubuntu 20.04. When I try to connect it keeps asking me for the password continuously. Wired connection work fine with windows operating system.

  • Password for a wired connection? Are you sure you're not connecting to some Wi-Fi instead? Commented Jul 19, 2020 at 8:45
  • Yes, I have password for this wired connection, idk why the provider did this. But this isn't the problem, I connect with the password on windows with no problem. Commented Jul 19, 2020 at 8:53

Are you using PPPoE? Commented Jul 19, 2020 at 9:01

What "it" keeps asking you for a password? Assuming it's not a web browser introducing some captive portal (reachable via WiFi possibly - you haven't posted ip a nor ip r results) - isn't the network 802.1x protected? Commented Jul 19, 2020 at 11:55

I'm no expert, so this answer may not make sense: I had the same problem (Linux Mint 22.1) and spent days trying to find an answer, to no avail. Finally, in desperation, I opened the network settings, went to the 'Security' tab and disabled the 802.1x security option (so the connection was not secure). The connection then completed successfully. With the connection still up, I then re-opened the network settings and re-enabled the 802.1X security option, entered my user name and network password (the same as for the wifi connection). The connection stayed up and has worked fine ever since. I think there's a bug somewhere in Liux's network management, but I don't know enough about it to track it down. I can't explain why it worked either - sorry.

  • I gave my suggestion in good faith, and explained I was no expert, yet your idiot bot sends me a comment saying the answer is unclear. Your comment is unclear - no explanation what is wrong. This is typical idiot computer nerd crap. Last time I try to help. Commented Jul 25 at 16:01
