We are currently designing some new functionality, and a question that came up was how to display information in a cohesive way. Basically, how should we visually emphasize data that belongs together.

We have 2 mockups: one with rather strong grouping (individual boxes) and another solution with weaker separation, but a design that is more in line with the rest of the application.

I'm not super happy with what we have but would appreciate feedback on how to group the data, e.g.

  • which variant would you pursue and why?
  • what would you do differently?
  • do we have any no-goes from a UX perspective?

Thanks for your advice! :)

  • Can you rewrite the question so that it is less a request for review and provide a clear and single problem you would like to solve? See also the help section of this site how to write good questions. Commented Oct 9 at 16:21
  • It's mostly about how to group data and how important it is to do so. I tried to rephrase a bit. Thanks for the pointer :) Commented Oct 9 at 17:24

The Gestalt Principles of visual design defines all the different ways that humans process visual information to make sense and group them. There are many different aspects that you can manipulate, from spacing to font size (to create hierarchy) to using similar colours or icons, and the list goes on.

I would definitely start with visual consistency to the rest of the design system / style guide, and then tweak the other visual elements until you come up with something that you are happy with. Without knowing exactly what they are, and also acknowledging that there are some subject aspects that may be at play, this is probably the most sensible answer I can provide.
