Angry Birds Comics is a comic book series originally published by IDW Publishing based on Rovio Entertainment's successful Mobile Phone Game franchise Angry Birds. The first run of the comic was published from June 2014 to June 2015, which was continued by a second run from January to December 2016. A third series, Angry Birds Comics: Game Play, was published for three issues in 2017. Comics based on the The Angry Birds Movie were also publish to serve as a tie-in.
In September 2024, nearly seven years after the IDW run, a Spiritual Successor of sorts began publication. Each issue is a collection of five comics released through the official Twitter / X page. Unlike the Negative Continuity of the originals, these new ones follow a rough storyline. These comics are not published by IDW.
Like its predecessor the Angry Birds Holiday Comics, the birds and pigs can speak in English (excluding Terence and Bubbles in earlier issues). Taking place on Piggy Island like the original games and Angry Birds Toons, most stories mix the usual cartoonish slapstick fights with Slice of Life.
Tropes:
General
- Fractured Fairy Tale: A recurring format of the comics called "Master Pig Theatre" parodies classic tales with an Angry Birds twist (by way of Universal-Adaptor Cast).
2014-15 run
- Crappy Carnival: The pigs build one in "Piggyland" as a ploy to steal the birds' eggs.
- Hiccup Hijinks: The first story of the first issue "Bomb Hiccups" has the titular Action Bomb trying to deal with his naturally explosive hiccups.
- Swiss-Army Superpower: Although he mostly uses it to turn into a boomerang, the comic "Peak Beak" reveals that his giant bill can be used for other purposes, such as a bridge, an umbrella, or a boat.
2016 run
- Gulliver Tie-Down: As the main character, this happens to Chuck in "Gullibird's Travels."
- Whole-Plot Reference: The entirety of Issue 7 is a parody of Gulliver's Travels ("Gullibird's Travels"). The comic adapts only the Lilliput and Brobdingnag sections of the story, with Chuck playing the titular "Gullibird."
15th Anniversary Comics (2024-present run)
- A Day in the Limelight: The 2024 comic "Happy Birthday, Hal" gives Hal some time to shine for his sparse appearances in the Angry Birds franchise.
- Hidden Depths: According to "Mr. Bomb-bastic", Silver is a fan of punk rock since childhood.
- In Name Only: Despited being released under the title of Angry Birds Comics and sharing the same logo (with the Angry Birds wordmark changed with the current logo), the new comics aren't published by IDW Comics.
