Main Characters

    Renee and Ifree in general
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: Renee has close associations with water, especially with how she appears from and teleports between Confluences by turning into water, and her favorite foods being sea-related, while Ifree is a Pyro Cion with all the fire-related themes that entails from his pink skin to his brash personality.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ifree is the hotheaded and rude Red to contrast Renee's calm and polite Blue; bonus points for having the appropriate colors with Ifree's pink skin and being a Fire Cion, and Renee's elemental association with water.

Characters in Afterimage

A young woman who lost her memory during the Razing, finding purpose as a mage while accompanied by a Pyro Cion named Ifree. Sweet but determined, she travels Engardin in search of the one who took her master's soul.

  • Amnesiac Hero: She was apparently found by villagers of Rubiwood Village not long after the Razing, with Aros claiming that Renee lost it during that apocalypse somehow.
  • Badass Cape: Wears a white cape throughout the game.
  • Doomed Hometown: The prologue starts off with Rubiwood Village and its inhabitants getting burnt down by a pack of monsters, chief of them being a mutated wolf that killed Renee earlier, but the reason why it was deliberately targeted is unknown.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Goes hand-in-hand with having to release the souls of Wanderers in fights and travelling across the monster-infested regions of Engardin, but she won't lose her compassion to help others despite this.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: She starts out with a sword named "Stars", though the player can opt to switch out for another weapon type.
  • In-Series Nickname: Always addresses her teacher Aros as "Madame".
  • I Will Find You: Her journey across Engardin is at first motivated by a mysterious girl taking Aros' soul and making Renee track her down, which she eventually does all the way to the Field of Hydro.
  • Justified Extra Lives: As the first demonstration when you eventually fall to the crystallized Lush Wolf, instead of dying, Renee's status as an "Ode" gives her the power to somehow reform at the last Confluence she stopped at.
  • Magic Knight: She is capable of both physical and magical combat, on top of her role as a mage requiring her to put Wanderers to rest besides the other abilities she has from multiple jumps to interacting with Confluences. In gameplay, her main and off hand slots are where she equips physical weapons (swords, blades, dualblades, greatswords, scythes, and whips), whereas the subweapon slot is for magical implements (spellbooks, wands, staves, and scrolls).
  • Multi-Melee Master: She can wields five types of melee weapons: swords, blades, dualblades, greatswords, scythes, and whips.
  • Mystical White Hair: Has the snow-white hair to add to her magical nature as an Ode and a mage, not to mention the mysteries of her past.
  • Sinister Scythe: Renee herself has no villainous or fearsome traits associated with the trope, but she's very handy with a scythe and can do a few tricks once upgraded like spinning it to blend her enemies into ribbons. This also fits her role as a mage who kindly gives the undead proper burials to usher their soul into reincarnation, giving her Don't Fear the Reaper themes.
  • Water Is Womanly: Besides her capability to use Hydro spells, Renee has many ties to water as an element: her personality is mainly polite and demure but ready to fight as needed; she respawns and moves between the water-soaked Confluences through water forming around her; the menu and loading screens are themed around the hues and movements of the blue ocean; and Renee likes sea-related foodstuffs.

A diminutive little Pyro Cion who accompanies Renee. Quite prideful, loud and rude for a little one, but a good travel companion all the same.

  • Ambiguous Gender: His gender isn't made clear to the player at first, let alone whether Cions have genders, but it's confirmed from others like Stanley calling him a "lad".
  • Affectionate Nickname: Being friends, he calls Renee "Ree". Otherwise, he uses her name as-is to indicate how serious Ifree is in certain situations.
  • Mr. Exposition: For someone who acts like a snotty child, he has surprisingly immense knowledge about Engardin that he could confidently tell Karsa that the Teardrop only existed after the Razing, which is ages after the Hermit's era.
