The Ex Files

Colby took a deep breath, gathering his courage around him like a shield.

So what if his ex boyfriend was here?

Colby had kicked Taylor Donahue’s lying, cheating, abusive ass to the curb years ago, and he’d only been a college kid then. He was an adult now, an FBI agent, and damned if he was going to let his ex cow him on his own home turf, in his office yet.

And then Taylor walked in, all gorgeous brown eyes and Southern charm, looking as handsome as he did ten years ago, and all Colby could think was, fuck.

It had been a week since Taylor’s reappearance, and so far he hadn’t done anything. Charmed the pants off Colby’s team, sure, but he hadn’t taken any special notice of Colby himself.

He should have known it wouldn’t last.

Colby was alone in the locker room when Taylor cornered him.

“Damn, Granger,” he said, eyes roaming over Colby’s body. “You’re looking good. How about we head to your place? For old time’s sake?”

“How about hell no?” Colby retorted. “Fuck off, Donahue. We’re done.”

Something flashed in Taylor’s eyes. “You’ll regret that,” he promised. “I always get what I want.”

Except they solved the case and caught the bad guys, and nothing happened. Colby figured that ten years had brought his ex some much-needed maturity, and he relaxed.

They were in Gonzales’, drinking beer and shooting the shit, Ian next to Colby, when Taylor made his move.

“So,” he said to Ian, leaning in close, that smug smile that had never meant anything good for Colby on his lips, “So, tell me really. You and Cole are together after hours, right? He does love a man in Kevlar.”

Colby felt the blood drain from his face. Damn Taylor Donahue.

“Taylor,” Colby said, hating how much it sounded like a plea, but his ex just continued.

“No, really, he didn’t tell you? He loves a man with a really big gun, don’t you, sugar?”

Colby could feel his face flame, but before he could apologize or run, a slow grin erupted on Ian’s face.

“That so? We should go to the range sometime, Granger. Put in a little target practise.”

Colby damn near choked on his beer. “You don’t mind that I’m gay?”

Ian arched an eyebrow. “Be rather hypocritical of me, don’t you think?”

This time, Colby did choke.

By the time Colby recovered, he realized the team were all looking at him with fond exasperation.

“Colby,” David said with the tone of a man talking to a particularly dim rabbit, “Trained observers, remember?”

Nikki, meanwhile, was handing a twenty to a smirking Liz. “Man, I thought for sure you and David had somethin’ going on.”

Colby gaped. “You knew? All of you?”

Charlie replied, “Well, I did some calculations, given the factors and my own observations... I think the layman’s term is no shit, Sherlock.”

Colby’s sputtering was drowned out by the gales of laughter from his team.

Of course, Taylor just didn’t know when to keep his damn mouth shut. “Wait,” he said to Ian. “You’re not serious.”

Ian blinked. “What do you mean?” he asked evenly.

“I mean, Colby? Really? He’s all right, but I guess I really don’t know what you see in him. I should know, we used to date.”

Ian looked at him levelly. “Personally, I think you have it backwards, Donahue. I have no clue what Colby ever saw in you.”

He looked at Colby, slow easy grin on his face. “Come on, soldier. How about we go get some target practise?”
