Intro | My Favorite Sesame Street Moments: Frank Caldeiro Caldeiro describes coming to New York from Argentina, and learning English from watching Sesame Street. A excerpt of Big Bird singing "ABC-DEF-GHI" is shown. |
SCENE | The scene begins with business going on as usual on Sesame Street. As the kids jump rope in the yard, a Monster on the Spot newsflash begins and an announcer (Jerry Nelson) introduces Telly to report that Baby Bear's little sister Curly Bear is about to try porridge for the first time! He goes to head over to the cottage of the Three Bears as the kids shrug in reaction. |
SCENE cont'd | At Baby Bear's house, the entire bear family is excited about this special day. Baby Bear assures Curly that she will love porridge, especially considering it's made by Mama Bear herself. "You are about to expewience the taste sensation of a lifetime!" says a joyous Baby Bear. |
SCENE cont'd | Telly rushes into the cottage, along with the Monster on the Spot camera crew. He asks an excited Mama Bear about why Curly has never tried porridge before. She explains that Curly was only old enough to eat baby food until recently. Baby Bear also announces that this isn't just any porridge - this is "Mama Bear porridge," - the good stuff that was famous enough to earn status as a "storybook classic." He holds up a copy of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as proof and Telly goes over to Papa Bear, who is so shocked by being on camera he becomes stiffened as he stiltedly answers Telly's questions. |
SCENE cont'd | Mama Bear announces that the porridge is ready, and from behind the table pop the Fairy Tale Chorus, whom Telly invited to build the dramatic effect with a song, as well as to help with the ratings. The suspense builds as Mama Bear feeds a spoonful of porridge to Curly... |
SCENE cont'd | ... and Curly spits it out in disgust! This shocks everyone, especially Baby Bear. At first he denies that Curly doesn't like porridge - it may just take her some time to get used to it. |
SCENE cont'd | The Fairy Tale Chorus resumes singing as Mama Bear makes a second attempt to spoon-feed Curly the porridge. Curly spits it out again, and the Chorus lets out a disappointed "Awww!" Baby Bear is still in disbelief. He thinks she's probably not hungry, but Mama notices Curly eating a banana. Papa, meanwhile, is scared so stiff he can only quote lines from the "storybook classic" he came from. |
SCENE cont'd | Baby Bear thinks maybe Curly needs to try some different porridge, so he takes her to Hooper's Store. Telly, the camera crew, and the Fairy Tale Chorus follow quickly. |
SCENE cont'd | At Hooper's, Alan watches the Monster News on TV where the anchormonster reports the results of a survey concerning pease porridge. Baby Bear rushes in with Curly and orders some porridge. Alan knew in advance that they were coming having seen Telly's detailed coverage, so he started making some of his own apple cinnamon porridge, with just a hint of brown sugar. Telly finally catches up with them. |
SCENE cont'd | The Fairy Tale Chorus pops up and sings the fanfare before Curly tries Alan's porridge. She spits it out again, the Chorus heads out, and Baby Bear feels devastated. Suddenly, Telly notices and exclaims that Curly is trying to eat a rutabaga. He then signs off, with the conclusion that Curly Bear seems to like anything but porridge! |
SCENE cont'd | Baby Bear feels upset that his wee little sister doesn't like porridge. After all, they're brother and sister - they're supposed to like the same things! And if she doesn't like porridge, then that probably means she doesn't like her brother. Alan reasures him that such is not the case: different people can like different things and still be on good terms. He uses Baby Bear and Telly as examples: both of their tastes are different, but they're still best friends. The same applies to family, as Baby Bear sees when Curly gives him a hug - and grabs him by the nose. Telly resumes his coverage and tells the viewing public to stay tuned to find out how long she will hold on. The Fairy Tale Chorus arrive to sing about the nose-grabbing event as Alan tries to spoon-feed Baby Bear the remaining porridge. |
