What stands behind every test and every guide
Backed by CLIA-certified labs
Each lab that processes your sample holds a current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certificate, maintains state licenses, and passes routine inspections plus third-party proficiency testing.
A clinician authorizes your order
A licensed clinician reviews and authorizes your lab requisition, which is why you can order a test without booking a doctor’s visit first. Your results go to you in a secure portal.
Reviewed before it publishes
Every guide is written by a health writer, edited for accuracy and plain language, then checked by a member of our Medical Review Board. Sources are listed on the page, and we re-review content as laboratory medicine changes.
25 years of lab testing education
We started in 2001 as Lab Tests Online, a nonprofit patient education project from the professional body for clinical laboratory scientists, now the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine. Direct test ordering joined the guide library in 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who writes and reviews the content on Testing.com?
Health and science writers research and write every guide, and an editor checks it for accuracy and plain language. A member of our Medical Review Board, made up of physicians and clinical laboratory professionals, confirms the science before it publishes. Sources are listed at the end of each guide, and the reviewer is credited on the page.
How long has Testing.com been around?
Since 2001. The site launched as Lab Tests Online, a nonprofit patient education project from the professional body for clinical laboratory scientists, now the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine. It became Testing.com in 2021, and direct test ordering joined the guide library in 2022.
Do I need a doctor's order to get a test?
No. A licensed clinician reviews and authorizes your lab order after you place it, so you can order without booking an appointment first. You can still bring your results to your own provider, and we encourage you to do that.
Who can see my results?
You do. Results post to your secure account, and we do not contact your insurance company, your doctor, or your partners. Sample handling and results are covered by HIPAA at our lab partners. If you want your provider to see a result, you share it.
What do tests cost, and can I use an HSA or FSA?
Tests are self-pay, so you do not need insurance to order, and the price is shown on the test page before you check out. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. If you would rather bill insurance, ask your health care provider to order the test for you.
Where can I read more about lab testing?
Our FAQ page answers more questions about the site and lab testing. The glossary explains terms you will see on a lab report, and our health conditions guides group tests by condition. How it works walks through ordering, sample collection, and results. Clinicians can find what they need on our page for health professionals, and our partners page lists the organizations we work with.
Where can I find your policies and consent forms?
Our policies page collects our terms of use, privacy policy, editorial policy, and advertising policy. You can also read our accessibility statement, the Cynergy Wellness informed consent, and the program terms and conditions.
