So, the PCB Gremlins got to the TritiLED V3.0 board. The timestamp on the gerber files is at 20:49 local time, making me think that the mysterious PCB-bug-inducing behavior is not limited to post-midnight design sessions.
I ordered the boards before prototyping the circuit: today, on a breadboard, I found the problem - an input line on the 74LVC1G123 pulled high when it should be pulled low. I haven't even received the PCBs back yet. I can rework the three incorrect PCBs easy enough - cut a trace and run a piece of wire-wrap - but it means another order to have a "releasable" version for the coin cell challenge.
Moral of the story: even the relatively early 20:49 is late enough for the PCB Gremlins to strike.

RadioShack Cabinet

A local store closed about 10 years ago, and the manager sold me this cabinet for $50. No parts inside, though :( It brings back fond memories of projects in my youth.
For years, it was behind my 10m target range, and somehow got hit a few times. This mystifies me, because I *never* miss ... there must be a hole in my trap :-)

@Yann Guidon / YGDES in my mind, relays get a pass because they need the free space for the contacts to move through. I've never seen an entirely solid-state true relay. The things called "solid state relays" are vile impostors.

Yep, I've seen it. In fact, the ebay seller tested my new scope with one:

Alone, the pulser is not very expensive, but you have to consider the other costs involved. I'd end up buying a new scope with enough bandwidth to measure it, and that would cost a few grand more :-)

@Yann Guidon / YGDES I did take a look before. It uses an ADCMP572 comparator to generate the pulses. They're $20 each, which is why I started with the slower ADCMP606 ($6). But, being CML output, it's limited to 400 mV of swing (800 mV differential), which is unlikely to be enough to drive a diode sampling gate. You can push it to 800 mV (1.6 V differential) by not terminating the outputs, but I don't know what that does to the pulse shape. And that sill might not be enough.

The BNC probably doesn't have that much effect. Johnson & Graham's book lists 11 ps as the rise time for a double-crimp coax BNC connector. I wouldn't be surprised if a PCB-mount one is even less.

That's another reason to re-invent the wheel; it's not currently open-source. Maybe the design has moved away from the comparator.

I looked at some 10 Gbps laser-diode drivers that could also serve as pulse generators. Those had programmable output levels.
