For American football, see WikiProject Deletion sorting/American football

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Football (soccer). It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Football (soccer). For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

I cannot find evidence of this website receiving any significant coverage from independent sources after searching for them, thus the topic does not pass WP:WEB. Some sources in the article discuss a recent merging of football websites that is related to this one, but they do not give significant coverage to the website itself or provide evidence of its notability. The other sources are simply a website that list domains, and a primary source. TheInevitables (talk) 22:43, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

FIFA Recognized Training Base – Port Alberni (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

I believe this article should be deleted because it is being used for promotion. It also fails Wikipedia:Notability (events). Looking at Wikipedia:Notability (events)#Inclusion criteria, it fails all the required points there as there is no certainty this event will happen. The notability also fails the requirements for WP:CRYSTAL (the very last sentence of the article is "As of November 2025, the site is still on FIFA's official list and waiting for a team to pick it". To me that means there is still a chance that the facility doesn't get picked.) The event itself is merely a potential training base in Port Alberni. The article itself really says nothing about the training base. There is a bunch of fluff to try and build the article up. Merely a sentence or two at Port Alberni#Sports should be sufficient for the potential event and there is already that there. This is not a stand alone article. Not even close. It should be deleted. I had thought about a bold merge but if no team choses this location, then it'll have to be removed from the Port Alberni page (as it wouldn't have happened). Better if this article gets deleted and if that location is picked, a bit more can be added to the Port Alberni page. Masterhatch (talk) 01:14, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Hi Masterhatch, I am the one who wrote the article (Abujahangir and Abuhasanjahangir, COI disclosed on my user page – I helped with the Port Alberni bid). This is not just a “maybe” thing. FIFA already accepted Port Alberni as an official training site (as pre-tournament and acclimatization training camp) in July 2025 and sent people here to check the stadium and hotels. It's the a national federation's choice which city they will stay prior to tournament begin not FIFA. FIFA will be a party for signing the contract between Port Alberni and the World Cup participating nation. Local news wrote about it several times (Alberni Valley News, CHEK, Times Colonist). You and other editors are welcome to redress. I will do few more work when I will have some more words and arts to include once I will have some more idea on presentation. I think it is okay to have its own page because it is an official FIFA-recognized place, not just a dream. If a team picks it later, we can add more. As I informed you several time I take some assistance of AI but not let AI to write it. Happy to fix anything you think still looks wrong. Thanks. — Abujahangir (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 06:04, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No team has picked the site. How is that notable? Even if a team does pick the site, I still fail to see how it is notable. It is a potential training ground, not an actual game location. A brief mention at Port Alberni is all it deserves. Beyond that, it is all promotion. And Wikipedia is quite clear regarding promotion. Masterhatch (talk) 06:28, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Notability isn’t about a team picking it later — it’s that FIFA already recognized Port Alberni in July 2025 as Canada’s only non-host-city training site. FIFA sent scouts, listed it officially, and local news covered it several times. That selection already happened and is notable. Article is now short and clean, no promo left. If no team picks it → we merge the info to Port Alberni page in 2026. If a team does pick it → we can rename the page to something like “FIFA 2026 Training Base – Port Alberni”. Either way, deleting it today throws away good sources for no reason. Appreciate your support to find the notability reason. Thanks. — Abujahangir (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 08:21, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete we don't need articles for training bases for the World Cup, as they won't have WP:LASTING coverage beyond the next year. Even if some teams do base themselves there, that doesn't warrant a separate article on the base anyway, as the bases chosen for teams are relatively poorly covered compared to everything else they do like the squads and matches. Which is the reason why we've never had an article on a World Cup training base before. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:54, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Delete All coverage seems to be from the event of FIFA visiting/picking the facility and while there are some discussions about the facility itself, without coverage independent of this selection event this article should be deleted. Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk) 12:37, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi everyone, I understand the delete votes — it feels like nothing big has happened yet because no team has picked us. But the big thing already happened: in July 2025 FIFA checked our stadium and hotels, gave the green light, and putting Port Alberni as the only non-host city in Canada and green lights for completing due diligence. 42 Teams will decide within January 2026, but the FIFA approval is real now and already in the news. We have started calling national teams. After Friday we do the second round and narrow it down. We are also talking to BC Soccer about bringing the 2028 provincial championships here (Richmond had it this year, Kamloops and Nanaimo are next, we want our turn after that). The same field will be used for bigger tournaments later. In the USA and Mexico they already have many training sites ready. In Canada the main stadiums (BC Place, BMO, etc.) so as Port Alberni are still being fixed up right before the World Cup. You know the local government supports to be on the same is most crucial which Port Alberni - you can verify the local governments council, board meeting minutes or videos. The article is short, only facts, no big words. I will add more newspaper stories in the next month or two when they come out. If no team comes, we can move the info to the Port Alberni page later. Deleting everything today just throws away what already happened. Thanks for reading. — Abujahangir (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 04:47, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Abujahangir: Three things: 1) you've already "!voted" so you do not need to state "keep" in bold text again; instead you can use "comment" or nothing at all. 2) Everything written in a Wikipedia article needs to be verifiable as soon as it's live. "I will add more later" is a classic argument to avoid in a deletion discussion. 3) Who is "we" that you speak of? Do you have a conflict of interest with this subject? ―"Ghost of Dan Gurney" (hihi) 06:46, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GhostOfDanGurney, thanks for the note.

(1) Got it – no more bold Keep, just a comment now.

(2) Understood, I’m not using “more refs later” as an excuse. The article already has live with three working news links (Times Colonist, Alberni Valley News, CHEK). More will come, but it’s not empty now.

(3) Yes, full COI – I’m on the Port Alberni 2026 organizing committee (already written on my user page and said in every post here). “We” is the local bid team. Happy to answer anything else. — Abujahangir (talk)

To address each link in turn (your formatting / c+p is terrible btw)
  1. (Uefa) Does not mention a rivalry, and frames article as a comparison of the pair with M+R (Messi & Ronaldo)
  2. (BBC, no link provided, but [15]) A news article for children, again compares H+M to M+R
  3. (talksport) Again, compares the pair to M+R, not each other
  4. (Sportco) Looks like WP:UGC site, rather than a WP:RS
  5. (LA Times) Another H+M v M+R article
  6. (Olympic) Compares one specific player (H) to the 3 others mentioned so far
  7. (Transfermarkt) This site is not generally considered as WP:RS due to WP:UGC, and again this article compares M+H to R, rather than directly to each other.
  8. (Score90, link malformed) Finally an article clearly calling it a rivalry, but again does not look like a WP:RS. On their About page they claim that Trough[sic] partnerships with the best in the business we create a cycle of mutual benefit between fans, advertisers, clubs, leagues, federations and players. and one of the options on the Contact Us page is Write for Us suggesting it is WP:UGC
In short, we need more reliable sources discussing a direct rivalry between the pair, rather than just streams of stats. Spike 'em (talk) 10:57, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My formating and much else is terrible and I do not even know what is c+p. I am new to Wikipedia, just tried my first article, and face massive retaliation.
Regarding the comparisons M-H with M-R, I think it makes the new duel more notable. Anyway, almost all sources cited in the old rivalry, write about the new rivalry and I can perhaps double them by sources in languages I read (French, Russian, Hebrew). There are 3 good articles in l'Equipe on the subject. Alexander Makarov 1 (talk) 16:51, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - not notable, see WP:Trivia TheInevitables (talk) 19:00, 30 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete – While I agree with WP:Trivia, Wikipedia is not used to have thousands of pages which documents rivalries between any two footballers, not just these two alone. If so, we would have been a lot busier keeping a watchout of them. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 23:15, 30 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I've merged many of the refs on the page, as there were many reused over and over. Many are low quality/ UGC / fan sites, and whilst there are some reliable sources comparing them, it is not enough to call this a rivalry and have a long-winded stats discussion.Spike 'em (talk) 14:05, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Right. I limited sources to avoid overcitation. 5 references for the argument that the two inherited the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry, could be a dozen more.
Dropping what you call not good sources, the list of uncited sources is still too long to list here. The question is how much is enough, where undercitation ends and overcitation begins. But whatever the standard, the media coverage is sufficient on the occasion. Every their record triggers a media salvo comparing where is the other guy in respect to the same milestone.
And if "rivalry" is not the right word, we can call it "race" or whatever the mainstream media massively covers. Alexander Makarov 1 (talk) 16:14, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good point on the Italian wiki sources. I should have checked there. That said, WP:NEXIST isn't everything. As a general rule unsourced pages, even when there are materials, aren't allowed to hang around forever. This has been an unsourced article for 19 years. Someone actually needs to put in some verified content (even if it just verifies one or two sentences) or we should just remove all of it. I contemplated redirecting it to Eccellenza Apulia. I may still do that if no article improvement happens. We can't support unsourced material per WP:BURDEN because people can just blank the page in such cases, and be correct in doing so under verifiable rules Facts or claims without an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports[b] them may be removed. They should not be restored without an inline citation to a reliable source. It would be helpful here for those who understand this sport and its Italian language sources (I don't particularly) to be the ones to take the time to add even just one inline citation. That to me would be sufficient to rescue this if the consensus here is that SIGCOV exists. Best.4meter4 (talk) 12:48, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MUSTBESOURCES isn't a valid argument. Unsourced content also can't hang around forever. We are approaching 19 years (created in 2007) of no verified content. Time to delete this or redirect the page per a suitable WP:ATD. WP:BURDEN is a thing here as unsourced pages can under policy be blanked no matter how much WP:NEXIST is out there (which so far nobody has established; name the sources with publication information or give urls and preferably take the time to verify at least one sentence of text).4meter4 (talk) 13:03, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Which of the sources above are SIGCOV? I agree with Raskuly's analysis above, although no issues from me re:student paper. Also professional experience totally irrelevant to notability. GiantSnowman 11:15, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Again, this goes back to the Alec Díaz article, which Raskuly nominated for deletion. The sources that saved the article from deletion were these link, link, link, link, link, link. The ones provided for this article are very similar in nature to the ones used in the Diaz article. Yet there were no objections, and the Diaz article was allowed to pass as notable. How is that considered fair when the Travis Bowen article has been improved and has more independent, reliable, secondary sources than the Diaz article? The Diaz article contains more primary sources than secondary sources. Not to mention it has received basically the same amount of coverage. Also, offline sources (WP:SOURCEACCESS) are also acceptable and should not be dismissed because some people don't have access to them. Shotgun pete (talk) 14:57, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not dismissing them which is why I didn't cast judgement on them. Where can I read it? I think the first four Díaz links are better than Bowen's 1-5 sources. Raskuly (talk) 15:27, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't mean that offline sources should be ignored or considered invalid. The first source used in the Diaz article link is a routine match summary with Diaz not even being the sole focus of the story. While in the Travis Bowen article, there are two similar sources,
Curley, Joe (10 October 2012). "Oxnard shuts out rival". Ventura County Star. pp. 5C. - Where Bowen records two goals against Oxnard College rivals Moorpark.
Curley, Joe (18 November 2012). "Oxnard men upset at home". Ventura County Star. pp. 5C. - The college team is defeated in the playoff quarterfinal, where Bowen is mentioned several times.
Now, the second source used in Diaz's article link is considered by some editors to be a routine transfer announcement. Why is that source considered better than the Urban Pitch one used in Bowen's article?
The third Diaz source link is similar to "Oxnard bios - Travis Bowen". Ventura County Star. 30 December 2012. pp. 4C, which summarizes his successful season, and there is a second one named "Oxnard's Bowen named soccer player of the year". Ventura County Star. 6 January 2013. pp. 5C, a much shorter one that still highlights his achievement.
The final Diaz source link is a national team callup, where he is not even the sole focus of the article. Not much different than this one, and this one.
I fail to see how the sources used in the Diaz one are that vastly superior to qualify for WP:SIGCOV while the ones used in the Bowen article are not. Shotgun pete (talk) 23:30, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I'm not dismissing, ignoring, or invalidating the Ventura County Star sources. Whatever terminology you decide to use, I'm not doing that. I just wanted to read them. I'll just take your word for it about the description of these sources and change my assessment to keep. Raskuly (talk) 00:55, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Stamatis Kalamiotis (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Discovered via a WP:RM/TR request over an incorrect name that resulted in two duplicate pages (this and Michalis Kalamiotis). It looks like the same editor created both, and over the years tried to blank Michalis Kalamiotis for being incorrect. Regardless, this player is not notable per WP:NSPORT. He barely squeaked by when WP:NFOOTY was accepted, as it looks like he had a single cup appearance for 46 minutes per his entry on the top flight team AEK Athens. All loans and subsequent teams were not in the top flight when he played there according to the Super League season pages. The only notable honor listed is the Greek Cup win--the aforementioned single 46-minute appearance, apparently in the first round, which isn't sourced anywhere, except via digging through the unsourced wiki links. Bottom line, the new notability standards require significant coverage of the player (not just database/team entries), which I cannot find. Recommend deletion, and the duplicate entry will go via WP:G8 as well. 2pou (talk) 18:08, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

User:BEN917 I just perused the sources and have not found anything that is unambiguously significant coverage. Many of the sources only provide brief coverage, passing mentions or are database entries. Only [33] is close, and even then still brief. Do you know of any other sources that cover the subject in detail? ~2025-31245-28 (talk) 15:50, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What more coverage is needed? The first and second division are considered professional football. BEN917 (talk) 16:05, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@BEN917, to be considered significant coverage, the sources should be spending a good amount of the prose discussing the player himself as opposed to the team and then noting that he was on the squad for a given game, etc. Just playing for a professional team is not considered notable enough for an article anymore. If the article covers a match, it might be usable if a paragraph or so is spent discussing his play, what his strengths were, or where he was exposed, etc. In short: the prose should be spent discussing the player as opposed to mentioning the player when it's really talking about a larger topic (my low bar is WP:100WORDS about the player himself). -2pou (talk) 18:21, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have made further improvements. Please check them and tell me if I'm in a good path and what else is needed in order for the article of being okay. BEN917 (talk) 11:48, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think what is needed is more just sources that qualify for WP:GNG, rather than directly improving the article per se, see WP:CONTN. I will say I am quite impressed with what you have accomplished given the limitations of the sourcing. I got a 404 or two so I did not examine quite everything, but reviewing the new sources, [34] is the best and still rather limited, [35] is an interview which is useful but does not count toward the notability requirement. Everything else was too brief in terms of its coverage of the subject to qualify. Let me know if I missed anything. ~2025-31245-28 (talk) 15:59, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I proceeded in further improvements. I believe the article now meets the requirements of notability even to a bare minimum so that the delete notice to be removed. Keep me informed if anything else is needed. Thank you for your help. @GiantSnowman@~2025-31245-28 BEN917 (talk) 12:31, 16 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@BEN917, you need to include the user mentions with your initial edit with a signature in order for the ping to go through. Unfortunately, you can’t just edit a ping into a previous post. Here’s a courtesy ping for you @GiantSnowman, @~2025-31245-28. You used to not be able to ping IPs… not sure if the new Temporary Accounts support pings.
Now eegarding your improvements, because they are primarily in Greek, could you pick out the WP:THREE best sources you think discuss Kalamiotis himself? I usually think two good ones is enough to satisfy “multiple” in WP:GNG, but picking three would help make sure to hit that if one isn’t quite there. -2pou (talk) 14:59, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, I would not say we necessarily need to have the three best sources in existence, but at a minimum at least two that qualify for GNG, meaning having significant coverage etc. If they could be linked here that would be helpful for everyone I think.
On the other topic the pings do work now. Perhaps the only way in which the new interface is better. ~2025-31245-28 (talk) 15:51, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For the avoidance of any doubt, level of professional play is irrelevant. I do not speak Greek so cannot properly assess the sources. Which of them are significant coverage? GiantSnowman 18:40, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
References from [4] to [16], [18], from [20] to [25] and from [27] to [33] cover all of his career in terms of transfers, debuts and first goals. Among them there are articles with his interviews and articles that talk about him and his career. BEN917 (talk) 08:23, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If I had to pick 3 it would be:
    1. The article that talks about his until then career
    2. His interview in 2010
    3. The article when he was acquired by Aiolikos
They satisfy the WP:GNG even if they aren't that big. Thus the article is covered in terms of notabilty. Regards! BEN917 (talk) 08:38, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
