Fic: Thirty Years of Winter aka Birthday Presents (and severus_fest recs)

I wrote Birthday Presents for severus_snape, which in the intervening month since posting I've decided is a crap title, so I've reposted it on AO3 as Thirty Years of Winter, just to add to the confusion XD  This was originally meant to be another, much longer fic, but I ran out of time and had to switch gears.  Thanks to perverse_idyll again for the quick and fabulous beta, and to the mods at severus_fest for granting me the extension to submit something!

Snowflake Challenge - Day 13

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some great examples include: complete a bingo, sign-up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep postponing. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback, or answering comments.

Finishing a thing for the AU/AR fest on snape_potter.  It's an idea I've had floating around in my head that is rather outrageous and that I hope will be ready in time for the fest.  Right now I'm spending spare moments researching and fleshing it out.  But I think it might have potential.  We'll see.

I'd also like to finish reading at least one or two fics from my AO3 marked for later history queue, mostly things people on my f-list have written or recced that I think will be great.

Not impossible, hopefully!  =D

Snowflake challenge 10, 11 & 12

Ahaha, I think I'll skip days 7 and 9 because I can't be bothered to think about creating fanworks right now, and most of the stuff I can really like are things I expected I would like, so they wouldn't fit the requirement for Day 9.  I guess I'm not very adventurous!

Day 10 - In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Day 11 - Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing or trope. Try creating a different kind of fanwork. Or check out some types of fanworks that are new to you.
I poked at some Elementary fic on AO3, because Elementary is great and it interests me.  <3

Day 12- In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. What are your hopes and dreams for fandom? Do you have any predictions about what the next five years holds for fandom?
I can't begin to talk about this with any kind of coherency right now, having only had about five hours of sleep last night XD  But!  I think fandom is becoming more and more a part of the public consciousness.  I am continually running into references of fandom in popular media.  The other day I came home to find Lee watching a documentary on Netflix about MLP Bronies.  "I don't know why I'm watching this, I'm not a Brony," he disclaimered.  We agreed that however shiny MLP is, it's not our kind of shiny, unfortunately.  But just the fact that there is a documentary about MLP fandom is kind of neat.  I think fans are being encouraged more and more to participate in fandom by the creators, and that's a nice thing.  Hopefully that continues.

Snowflake Challenge - Day 8

Day 7 will have to wait for a day when there are no house guests, which is not this day. XD  But!

Day 8:  In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are.

*wriggles uncomfortably*  I don't think I've known most of the people currently active on my flist for very long, so there may not very much of me to love.  But please love me anyway!  XD

Snowflake Challenge - Day 6

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

I will have to say Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon.  When I was a kid I use to get up at 6:30 in the morning to watch dubbed episodes of Sailor Moon.  It was my first real fandom.  I remember I loved it so much that when they stopped dubbing it I used to have dreams about waking up to a new season of Sailor Moon, I was so obsessed with it.

Snowflake Challenge - Days 4 & 5

For the fandom snowflake challenge day #4, I poked at someone new and they answered back with a perfectly amiable PM. =D

For day #5: In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm sure this person needs no introduction to Sherlock Holmes fandomers, but just in case there are fans of the famous detective out there who do not yet follow this person's work, may I introduce the immensely talented Ghostbees on tumblr?

What can I say about Ghostbees? I think one look at the artwork on their tumblr and you will readily understand why I think they are amazing. The artist's Holmes and Watson are uniquely their own, not quite Granada, not BBC Sherlock, but a mixture of things, as the artist explains.

I also think the artist has a good head on their shoulders, and can respect their opinions about the various Sherlock Holmes adaptations (they really get why Elementary is great to me), and this makes me like them even more.

I really hesitate to link specific works here because there are so many that I like to choose from. But maybe a few will illustrate what I mean when I say amazing? The illustrations make me smile every time I come across one, and the artist is so very prolific that there are plenty to enjoy. If you're at all interested in the various permutations of Sherlock Holmes, do consider following Ghostbees on tumblr.

Snowflake Challenge - Day 2

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1.  The write15 community on Dreamwidth.   The write15 community is a support group that encourages its members to write (or edit, or do another writing-related activity) for at least 15 minutes every day.  All the writing support communities I've found on LJ have been sort of humongous and heavily focused on prompts or posting of fic, but this one is basically just a supportive space to moan about how little progress you made, or maybe rejoice at how well you wrote today.  There are daily check-ins and discussion of writing goals.  There are currently only 23 members, and It's really quite comforting to have a space where I can let out all my insecurities and talk about the writing process.  It's also nice to see what other people are doing, what their goals are.

2. sentinel_thurs is a weekly challenge community for one of my old favorite fandoms, The Sentinel.  Each week on Thursday evening a new weekly challenge is posted.  The community is still posting prompts even now, which I think is absolutely amazing in a fandom that old.  I'd love to see more activity.  If you're a fan, or used to be a fan, please do think about stopping by and doing a challenge or two.  =)

3. Not really a fandom community, but... >__>   menstrual_cups is a support community for women who are interested in switching to menstrual cups for their monthlies.  It's good to have a community you can go to and ask questions.  I basically looked at each and every post before selecting the menstrual cup that was right for me .I personally believe that switching to green products for your monthly cycle is the best thing you can do for your body in that arena, but it took me a while to make the jump because it can be kind of scary and seem somewhat radical, so this community helped me a lot.  There's also cloth_pads, for those who don't like the idea of sticking something inside themselves.  They're way more comfortable than any disposable products I've tried.

Secret Snarry Swap

My gift fic was posted on snape_potter for the Secret Snarry Swap.  It's long and plotty and features older!Harry & Snape.  A very melancholy, very laid-back fic, I think.  I quite enjoyed reading it =)  If epilogue compliant fic featuring the Potter kids is your thing, do go and read Castles of Sand.
