I landed on this page hoping for amusement, but was sadly disappointed. Perhaps I have misunderstood its function?
Wikipedia does make me laugh sometimes, mainly when it reports the lives of great wits: I think of Dennis Skinner's Queen's Speech jokes for example. But that is a rare groove.
Perhaps the most reliable resource for those landing here in search of levity would be the lamest edit wars page.
But there is surely room for more humour in wikipedia? Many a true word is spoken in jest.— Preceding unsigned comment added by LaFolleCycliste (talk • contribs) 16:45, 28 June 2012
- Indeed, the page in itself is not humorous at all! Its function is only to list humorous pages, which end up here: Category:Humorous Wikipedia essays. Cheers, Nemo 20:59, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Images
editI think the left image should be replaced with a image that is the same as the currently on the template, but with the "Humor" triangle on the bottom-right corner and the right image should be removed. What do you guys think? --TL22 (talk) 00:44, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Template:Humorous essay → Template:Humor essay – And change "humorous" to "humor" in its text. Whether an essay is actually humorous is a subjective judgement each reader will make. This is basically a misuse of that word, and seems to be a case of using a longer word when a shorter one will do just to sound more fancy. So, WP:CONCISE as well as WP:PRECISE. PS: I'm just lopping off the suffix, not picking the -or spelling for any kind of nationalistic reason, though it also has the benefit of being shorter. Template:Humour essay exists as a redirect already. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 19:06, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose as the word humorous also means "related to humor". Also there are plenty of sources specifying in essays writing that use the same form (one for instance, Ned Stuckey-French, "Humorous Essay." Encyclopedia of the Essay, ed. by Tracy Chevalier. Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers, 1997)--Less Unless (talk) 16:07, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- Ditto, as I found timewastingly way back in the early 1950's in public libraries when I was a boy: until I have read it, a book named "The Humour of John Zxcvbnm" may be a book whose contents amuse me and written by him, or it may be a dry-as-dust literary disquisition about John Zxcvbnm's humorous writings. Rewording
editPinging Redrose64 as reverter and @Andrybak as other revertee.
Following BRD, I'd like to ask why you think the newer version of this template is worse. I justified my edit by saying it shouldn't look identical to the other essay template. Rm unnecessary fluff
, since the template was seemingly copied and pasted from {{Essay}}.
This is my proposed version of {{Humorous essay}}:
This is a humorous essay. It contains humorous advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors and isn't meant to be taken seriously. This page is not an encyclopedia article or one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines. |
This is how it is currently, after the revert:
This is a humorous essay. It contains humorous advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors and isn't meant to be taken seriously. This is not an encyclopedia article or one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines and may not represent community consensus. |
Before my edits, other people expressed the opinion that it should be reworded. See for example this edit by Lettherebedarklight who said this really should be emphasised
, and this edit by @Dawn PScLim who said basically added {{humor}} into this text so it isn't just like {{essay}}
. Could you explain why you think the old one is better? Thanks. FaviFake (talk) 16:04, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

- @Waddie96 Thanks for reverting to the old icon, but I'm not sure what you mean by "edit war?" I pinged Redrose over a week ago and they've not replied to this and other reverts of my edits that they've made. (see for example WT:MERGE)How long am I supposed to wait for an active editor to awknowledge my messages to them before re-implementing the changes? FaviFake (talk) 15:33, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- Ah yes tbh I was totally out of the loop. I read into redrose's edfit sumary "tired of this" or something, and strung a story in my head,. Anytway I apologise. And I never saw this chat, or the edit summaries re: implementing it ... soz waddie96 ★ (talk) 16:56, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- No worries! While I linked to it in the edit summary, it was at the end and was easy to miss. I guess I'll give Redrose64 a bit more time to respond if they wish, and then I'll restore my changes again if they don’t show up.You don't seem neither opposed nor in support. - Comment: I implemented the changes again following redrose's lack of response. FaviFake (talk) 16:35, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- The changes here look like an improvement to me. Sdkb talk 20:51, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
