Sortability of table

edit

I would like to make {{Contentious topics/table}} more properly sortable, by changing, for example:

  • the Arab–Israeli conflict -> Arab–Israeli conflict
  • post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people -> United States: post-1992 politics and closely related people
  • the region of South Asia (India... -> South Asia region (India...

From where are those titles derived? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:41, 19 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

That column is basically verbatim whatever the Arbitration Committee wrote when defining the topic area. I've changed it to sort without regard to an initial "the", but beyond that creating custom sortcodes would be unnecessary make-work. You can just sort by the short name (the last column). ~ Jenson (SilverLocust 💬) 03:25, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 22 October 2025

edit

The request is related to the Module:Contentious topics/talk notice page.

In line 578, on the anywhere on Wikipedia part:

  • change it to anywhere on the English Wikipedia

The reason can be found here

Thanks. 79.191.19.69 (talk) 14:21, 22 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Marking as answered until there is consensus for this change, since it affects many pages. Please discuss. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:34, 22 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
The change makes sense to me. We can't control what people might be able to discuss on any other-language Wikipedias. Anomie 20:37, 22 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Given that the talk page notice is on an English Wikipedia talk page, I feel this is already understood within the context. isaacl (talk) 07:37, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Module talk:Contentious topics/talk notice redirects here, so if this is not the best place, apologies.

  • I added the ArbCom Arab-Israeli enforcement template to Talk:Palestine_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction. The talk page did not exist, so it was created in the same revision.
  • The saved page displayed the following error message.
    • Lua error in Module:Contentious_topics/talk_notice at line 583: attempt to get length of field 'edit' (a nil value)
  • Line 583 in Module:Contentious_topics/talk_notice is
    • if #currentTitleObject.protectionLevels["edit"] == 0 then
  • I can see that mwclient.page.Page(site, 'Talk:Palestine and weapons of mass destruction').protection is an empty dictionary.
  • I'm wondering whether line 583 should have a nil option.
  • Removing the template removed the Lua error (or maybe it was just having a second revision did that). I've re-added the template and there was no error. Sean.hoyland (talk) 08:00, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is the right page, and that should be   Fixed with Special:Diff/1320585475. It was just having a second revision; the "protection" table is not initialized until the page is created. A WP:PURGE would've also fixed it. Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 16:47, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Articles relating to articles?

edit

Currently, {{contentious topics/talk notice|blp}} produces the sentence:

This article relates to articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles, a contentious topic.

Most contentious topics are directly defined in terms of their subject (like "climate change", "abortion", or "the Troubles"), but WP:CT/BLP is an exception. I think we should add a special case to the template so that it produces a less confusing and circuitous sentence here. jlwoodwa (talk) 01:27, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Noting that the clerks are aware of this and have been discussing it. EggRoll97 (talk) 03:25, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
