Frequently Asked Questions - Fiction Edition

Over time I've been asked a lot of questions about the stories neontiger and I write. Since I'm not really into writing authors' notes before story chapters anymore, I believe a nice centralized question and answer page would be prudent. I am also listing the current status of all my stories here as well. Why am I not making this part of the Yuki FAQ page? Well, I believe I answered that in question number 16.

Just as a warning, there will be spoilers here. They will be hidden in white text on white background that will be revealed when highlighted. (Just look for the [Chapter Spoiler] [] tag.) I will also make sure to specify where specifically in the story the spoiler takes place, so those who have read up to that point should be able to look safely while those who have not can skip it if they so choose. I will not be spoiling aspects of any story unless it has already appeared in a chapter or if the story has been finished/discontinued. I might tease about future plot points, but there will be no free peeks at upcoming chapters, sorry!

Dreaming To Reality

Are you ever going to finish the original Dreaming to Reality?

Sorry, but no. Neon and I are completely rewriting the series and have no desire to go back and finish up the old version, but we are keeping it online for those who would like to see our first attempt at writing in the Digimon fandom.

Why are you using the name Dreaming To Reality on a number of your Digimon fics?

We've chosen the name Dreaming To Reality to signify that the stories are a part of a unified series as a whole. The name itself is simply a nod to the first story we did and the fact that it is a rewrite. In other words, all the Dreaming To Reality stories, save for the original version of Dreaming to Reality, exist within the same continuity.

Dreaming To Reality: 02 Remix

Are other Chosen Children going to appear?

[Prologue Spoiler] [It was stated here that there are a total of fifteen Chosen Children. Ryo Akiyama makes nine and Keiko [Family Name Unknown] makes ten.] [Chapter 2 Spoiler] [Daisuke Motomiya makes eleven and the Digimon Kaiser makes twelve. ] [Chapter 13 Spoiler] [Miyako Inoe is number thirteen on the list and Iori Hida brings us to fourteen. Just one more Chosen Child left unaccounted for.]

Why is Character X behaving like Y, and why didn't Event Z happen? It wasn't like that in the anime!

Ah, you are seeing the beauty of the Remix in action. We have taken elements of the Digimon Adventure 02 anime, and a few other sources, and shook things up after adding our own unique blend. The only canon that we are rigidly adhering to is the events that occurred Digimon Adventure and the first two movies. After that, everything has changed even in some small ways, including (but not limited to) personalities, ages, appearances, and events. We didn't intend to write a novelization of the 02 anime after all. Besides, keeping everything exactly the same would be kind of boring, wouldn't it?

As for specific answer for "why" we made the changes we did... We're running with interesting ideas of what if scenarios that offered a lot of potential in terms of plot and character development. The big question we ask ourselves is, "If we wrote the anime, what direction would we have taken it in?"

[Chapter 7 Spoiler] Why did you choose to make Jun [so cruel to Daisuke?]

[Don't worry, we're not demonizing Jun for the sake of bashing her. We just think this is an interesting interpretation for the character in our remix. In the anime, Jun was rather harsh on Daisuke for no adequately defined reason, save the suggestion of sibling rivalry. She badmouthed him to total strangers and would sink to violence with little provocation. Given that, plus an event where she practically kidnapped Yamato to force him to spend time with her due to her overly intense crush on him, she gives an impression of someone who is rather self-centered and doesn't think of others' feelings. While in the anime this is played for laughs, Mouko and I saw potential in this as a character development arc for Daisuke, as well as, but not necessarily limited to, Yamato, Taichi, Hikari, and Takeru. Not all family relationships necessarily work, and some people are cruel, even to family members.]

[Chapter 10 Spoiler] Why did you choose to make Miyako and Iori [the same age as Daisuke, Hikari, and Takeru?]

[We experimented with a lot of different dynamics that could take place with Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori in the mix. Having the younger Chosen all share the same classroom promised a lot of interesting potential for us to play with, particularly when we settled on their personalities in the remix. Of course, I'm not saying that there aren't other reasons as well for why this occurred in the story.]

What video games are considered "canon" for this story?

None!

There seems to be some confusion surrounding why [Prologue Spoiler] [Ryo Akiyama] appeared in the prologue. Rest assured that you readers aren't required to play any of the games to get caught up on the background. Mouko and I haven't played any of them either. We just felt that we could give that character a very interesting role to play in the Dreaming To Reality continuity that would touch upon things that happen not only in 02 Remix but in the books to follow in the series, and some elements that appeared in Digimon Adventure as well.

[While some elements of Ryo's story are similar to the games, such as his battle against Millenniumon, the exact details are quite different and eventually will be told, if just in summary. Don't worry, Ryo isn't going to be borrowing the other Chosen Children's partners, and there isn't going to be infinite alternate universes that Ryo is condemned to forever travel. Mouko and I hate those kind of stories.]

Are the movies canon to this story?

The first and second, as well as the entirety of Digimon Adventure, occurred before the start of 02 Remix. In fact, the prologue directly references the second movie.
Basically movies three and four, plus the entirety of Digimon Adventure 02, did not happen.

What about the drama CDs, manga, and other supplement resources?

While Mouko and I have taken some inspiration from various sources, both Digimon related and not, readers only need watch the Japanese versions of Digimon Adventure the anime, Digimon Adventure the movie, and Our War Game! to catch up with the continuity that precedes 02 Remix. Rest assured, if we bring in something that wasn't introduced in any of those three sources, it will be treated as something brand new that will be explained sooner or later, like any original element we write into our stories.

Four

[Chapter 3 Spoiler] How did Amaya know the name of [Horumon]?

Botan told her in chapter [1]. [The flashback to the supernatural events that happened at Ugetsu High School was told from Amaya's perspective and things were mentioned as she clarified details to Kurama. I felt it was better to write out the telling in third person rather than have a wall of dialogue with Kurama adding in some occasional commentary.]

Will Yusuke make an appearance?

Eventually, yes, but keep in mind where he is right now and what was going on during this period in time. [Anime Episode 98 Spoiler] [Yusuke has left for what he estimated to be three years, and is currently in training to defeat his ancestor Raizen. He has no means to make contact with Human World, Spirit World, or any of his friends, and no way to get back home just yet. That might change sometime in the future, however.]

Will any of the other [former Spirit Detectives] make an appearance?

[Anime Episode 71 - 95, Chapter 1 Spoilers] [Shinobu Sensui died at the end of the Chapter Black story arc, his soul and body confiscated by Itsuki to another dimension. Barring the event that someone finds their way to this pseudo-space with a means of bringing the dead back to life, it is unlikely that he will make an appearance. Kuroko Sanada has a fairly good chance of showing up in the story eventually, as she is alive, well adjusted, and is not only the first Spirit Detective, but also a female Spirit Detective with a love of family. Gentle readers who made it to episode 95 may recall that she showed up in the original story to serve as, shall we say, a representative of the job for Yusuke. There's no reason that she won't be called upon to do it again with Amaya, especially when they have at least one little thing extra in common.]

[Chapter 4 Spoiler] Did you base [Irokafue and her children] off any particular mythology?

Yes, actually. [Norse mythology to be specific. This picture served as the initial inspiration. The color demons are based off a mishmash of troll lore, and Irokafue has influence from dark elves.]

[Chapter 4 Spoiler] Did you intend for [Amaya's first assignment as Spirit Detective] to be so lengthy and dire?

Surprisingly, no. I initially worried that the chapter might wind up being too short, but the plot suddenly expanded on me as I was writing and forced me end the chapter far earlier than my original cut off point. Stories grow and evolve on you when you least expect it. [The funny thing was in the original draft, it was actually supposed to be a pretty uneventful assignment against nameless demons that Kurama dispatched without giving Amaya or Botan a chance to do much of anything. Sounds kind of boring, don't you think? Thank goodness for overarching mysteries to save the day!]

Do you intend to put romance in the story?

Yup! I am a total sucker for romance and I couldn't keep any out of a story if I wanted to. It always sneaks in somehow. So keep an eye out for the romantic subplots. They'll be coming by sooner or later.

What pairings do you have in mind for the story?

I can't give too much away right now, as I want things to happen organically as the story progresses, but I can tell you about the established couples of the series. You're going to be seeing some Kuwabara/Yukina cuteness hopefully in the near future. Yusuke/Keiko is a given whenever the former Spirit Detective gets his butt back to Human World. Other than that, well, this is a mystery.

Why does it take you so long to post chapters?

Aside from the fact that I'm working on many stories at the same time, both in fandom and out, and real world obligations, the biggest obstacle to a regular update schedule is the fact that my health is generally very poor. I'm afraid there's not much I can do about that except try my best to write what I can when I can. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Is there anything I can do to encourage you to post chapters more often?

This question reminds me of those update hostages that I've seen some authors do. While I would greatly appreciate more feedback, the practice of an author forcing the readers to give a certain number of reviews before they'll release the next chapter doesn't sit well with me. I don't want my readers to feel as though I'm forcing them to do anything just to find out what happens in my story. Reviews that are given freely are worth more than holding your readers at gunpoint.

That said, I can't deny that receiving thoughtful feedback is the entire reason why anyone posts their work online, including me. It lets authors know what we're doing right, where we can improve, and what people think of the story as a whole. Reviews always leave me excited to work more on the story, which helps give me the energy to write more often. So, if you like my story, or any of my stories in general, please drop me a review. I'd love to know what you think.

Why didn't Kurama mention it was [Anime Episode 91 Spoiler] [Shun-jun of Spirit World's Special Defense Force] who destroyed his old body?

You could ask the same question about why Kurama never told Yusuke in the anime or manga. Interesting how he never showed any real concern towards the person who technically murdered him, even when he had the opportunity to confront that person, isn't it? Not to mention it was never explicitly stated that [Shun-jun] was the one who did it, just [that he was the one to corner the spirit fox]. It's enough to make one wonder about the actual events that transpired.

[Chapter 6 Spoiler] How much did Amaya really overhear [at the end of chapter six]?

[Amaya answers the question herself in chapter seven.]

[Chapter 7 Spoiler] Was Amaya lying when she [told Botan what she overheard]?

Ah, that is the question, isn't it? Did Amaya lie? Sadly, I can't answer this directly, as it encroaches upon events that have not transpired yet in the story, but I felt I needed to add this question here anyway. (As the person who asked paired it with the last question.) Trust me, if you pay attention, the answer will come to light sooner or later.

[Chapter 3 Spoiler] Is it wrong that I find [Horumon stabbing himself in the crotch] hilarious?

If it's wrong, I don't want to be right.

Keterburg

In what order are you supposed to read these fics?

Technically this is a series of short vignettes that can stand on their own without requiring you to read them in any particular order, but the chronological order is as follows: Dedicated, Anxiety, Curiosity, Unwanted, and Warm.

Marital Support

Why are Marital Support's chapters so short when compared to your other stories?

The reason why Marital Support has a different feel than my other stories is because it's basically a compilation of flash fiction stories set in the same continuity and arranged in chronological order.

You see, while playing Fire Emblem: Awakening, I got inspired to write small scenes based off of stuff that happened during game play. I had thoughts about how I might interconnect various ranking conversations and events together. I had no overarching plot in mind, just short moments in time similar to the rankings in the game, which mainly focused on the relationship between Chrom and Avatar/My Unit/Rei/Robin/Rufure. I wound up making so many of these flash fiction stories that happened to be linked to one another that I grouped them together under the label of Marital Support.

Mouko was the one who suggested that we start posting them on Dragon and Tiger, as well as FF.net and other places. Thus, we've unofficially created Flash Fiction Fridays, and I've got a new series running.

Why did you choose to give Avatar/My Unit/Robin/Rufure the name "Rei" instead of one of the canon ones?

Funny enough, due to some miscommunication on my part, I mistakenly thought Rei was the character's name in Japanese. Given that [Fire Emblem: Awakening Spoilers] [Grima's name in Japanese is Gimurei], I thought that was a really clever and subtle move on the game designers' part.

Then I found out that the name of Rei was for another character in Fire Emblem and that Rufure is the name of the avatar in Awakening. Oops.

I was ready to use the name Robin to go with all the other North American localized names for the game, but Mouko and I agreed that [the connection between Rei (レー) and Gimurei (ギムレー)] was just too tempting to resist. Also, I noticed that a lot of writers and artists tended to favor using their own unique names for the character anyway. Thus Robin became Rei and has an amusing little anecdote to go with the name, as well as a sly nod to spoilery spoiler spoilers.

Mouko and I had a good laugh at how little time it took for someone to figure out the connection. We have clever readers!

RGB Quest

Is Ask RGB based off the video game, the manga, or what?

No. RGB Quest was inspired by the Pokemon video games and its various incarnations such as anime, manga, etc. (as well as a certain unrelated narrative that will not be named just yet), but the story behind it and the interpretation of the characters are completely original.

Why is the rival named Green and the female protagonist named Blue? Isn't it the other way around?

The names of these two are different depending on what incarnation of Pokemon you're looking at, as well as the localization. The same can be said for Red and the other characters. Despite the fact that RGB Quest is not based on any specific canon but its own, I knew that no matter what name I chose for these two, it would rub someone the wrong way, so I simply chose what I felt suited them and the narrative the best. I shant spoil why here though. That's for you to figure out.

Where did you get the music for Ask 8's video?

I composed that music myself, actually. I considered using music from the games or a remix with a creative commons license, but I didn't find anything that would accomplish what I intended, so I made something I felt would be suitable enough.

Sonic Remix

What continuity do you use for this series?

Sonic Remix is not part of any video game, cartoon, comic, novel, or any other continuity but our own. Like every story written by Mouko and me that has the word "Remix" in the title, the story is its own unique universe created by us, seasoned with details and characters that can be found in various sources.

The series closest to Sonic Remix is the SatAM cartoon, and only in its basic premise - a mad scientist by the name of Robotnik has conquered Mobius and turned everyone into his roboticized slaves. Sonic and his band of Freedom Fighters must fight back against the tyrant, free all the enslaved people, heal their planet, and put the true royal family back on the throne. The main difference between both series is that Sonic Remix is notably more serious than the cartoon, with differences to the characters' designs, backgrounds, and even some personality tweaks to make a unique story.

This picture I drew a while ago pretty much sums up how a little bit more realism has been injected into the story, but not so much that the cartoony roots are lost completely. Just a hint more darkness has been added to give more depth to the colors, and Mobius is no longer clothing optional. ;)

I really enjoyed reading about Glyph. Are we going to see more about him?

He's slated to appear sometime late in the Sonic Remix story Neon and I are working on. Revealing too much about who he is would constitute as spoilers, so I am hesitant to delve into his back story before it's revealed in Sonic Remix. However, I might do more with him in pictures or flash fiction/short stories that try to dodge around spoilers if there is enough interest in him. The same is true with the rest of the characters Neon and I have created.

Superfluous

Can I shoot Sugi?

Feel free to give Sugi Kaibo a few whacks in a fic or a pic if you like. Neon and I certainly had fun doing that in the story. Just send us a link if you do. We'd love to see it.

Flash Fiction Presents

Are you ever going to finish [insert flash fiction present's non-existent title here]?

If one of my friends makes a request for it, then it's very likely, barring any inspiration problems. Typically the stories I make as gifts are just moments in time without a real beginning or end, so I don't put them through quite as rigorous a screening as I do with the stories I post outside of LiveJournal. Currently, the only gift being expanded into a story that stretches beyond a moment in time is a My Little Pony present for kitsuja, now titled as Seeing Stars. If any of the gifts stir up enough interest that people want to see more I might try out writing for the characters involved again and see if I can make a short story out of it at the very least.
