A-to-Z (AtoZエートゥズィ Ē tu Zi) is a series of LIGHT Machine monsters revolving around a Union and Contact Fusion strategy, Special Summoning its Fusion Monsters by banishing its Fusion Materials from the field and/or Graveyard. These cards have been used by Seto Kaiba and Chazz Princeton in the Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime.

The Japanese card text of the anime-exclusive "Hyper Coat" specifies Machine monsters with the Latin characters "V", "W", "X", "Y" and/or "Z" in their Japanese names, with the intention of supporting members of this series.

This series is related to the "Armed Dragon" archetype via "Armed Dragon Catapult Cannon" and the "Ojama" archetype via "Ojama Pajama" and "Ojamassimilation", a reference to Chazz having played the three alongside each other during Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

Playing styleEdit

The A-to-Z series revolves around using Union Monsters and performing Contact Fusions by banishing Fusion Materials from the field and/or Graveyard. The monsters consist of Main Deck "component" Union monsters, and Extra Deck "combined" Fusions made using the former monsters. The Fusion Monsters typically feature effects that discard a card to remove the opponents cards, and "tag out" into their components.

As the series lacks an archetypal name, in-theme support cards specifically support LIGHT Machine Union monsters instead.

  • "Union Hangar" is a Field Spell that searches a LIGHT Machine Union on activation, and can search another LIGHT Machine Union by equipping it from the Deck when a LIGHT Machine Union is summoned.
  • "Union Activation" is a conditional double searcher for Main Deck A-to-Z monster pieces. It also synergizes with the A-to-Z Fusion Monsters' "disassembly" effects to search for an additional Main Deck monster with 3000 or more ATK.

The series also benefits heavily from general Union monster support, such as "Union Carrier" (Traditional Format only), "Unauthorized Reactivation", "Union Driver", "Union Pilot", "The League of Uniform Nomenclature Strikes", and "Therion "King" Regulus" (which can equip Machines). Other LIGHT Machine Union monsters such as "Heavy Mech Support Armor", "Heavy Mech Support Platform", and "Torque Tune Gear" can also be run as searchable support targets.

Sample combosEdit

A-to-Z Dragon Buster Cannon

"A-to-Z-Dragon Buster Cannon" can be summoned off of just "Union Activation", however the combo to do so is long and requires usage of every card in the Extra Deck, meaning an A-to-Z deck aiming for this needs to be built around the combo.

Opening: "Union Activation"
  1. Activate "Union Activation", sending "X-Head Cannon" to search for "X-Cross Cannon".
  2. Summon "X-Cross", activate its effect to equip "B-Buster Drake", then summon it.
  3. Link "X-Cross" and "B-Buster" into "Platinum Gadget".
  4. "B-Buster" effect to add "Y-Yare Head".
  5. "Platinum Gadget" summons "Y-Yare", who equips "B-Buster".
  6. Summon "Union Controller" using "Y-Yare" and "Platinum Gadget".
  7. Chain any order: "Controller" adds "Union Hangar" to hand, "B-Buster" adds "Y-Dragon Head".
  8. Activate "Hangar" and add "Z-Zillion Tank".
  9. "Controller" effect to summon "Z-Zillion".
  10. "Z-Zillion" equips "Y-Yare" with its effect
  11. Summon "Y-Yare" and equip "B-Buster", then summon "B-Buster".
  12. "Union Hangar" equips "Union Driver" from Deck to "B-Buster".
  13. "Driver" effect to banish self for "A-Assault Core" from Deck.
  14. Special Summon "A-Assault".
  15. Link "B-Buster" and "A-Assault" into "Bujinki Ahashima".
    1. Chain Link 1: "Ahashima"
    2. Chain Link 2: "A-Assault"
    3. Chain Link 3: "B-Buster"
  16. "B-Buster" adds "C-Crush Wyvern" to hand, "A-Assault" returns "B-Buster" to hand.
  17. "Ahashima" summons "Y-Dragon" from hand and "A-Assault" from Graveyard, who are then used to Xyz Summon "Starring Knight".
  18. "Starring Knight" effect to summon "B-Buster".
  19. Summon "Galaxy Photon Dragon" using "Y-Yare" and "Z-Zillion".
  20. "Galaxy Photon" effect to add "Galaxy Soldier".
  21. Link "B-Buster" and "Controller" into a Link-2 LIGHT monster.
  22. "B-Buster" adds "Z-Metal Tank" to hand.
  23. "Galaxy Soldier" sends "C-Crush" or "Z-Metal", searches another "Galaxy Soldier" and repeats.
  24. Summon "Cyber Dragon Nova" and then "Cyber Dragon Infinity" using the two "Galaxy Soldier".
  25. Link the Link-2, "Starring Knight" and "Galaxy Photon" into "Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax".
  26. Effect of "Infinity" to attach "Ahashima" as material.
  27. Summon "ABC-Dragon Buster" by banishing its materials.
  28. Summon "XYZ-Hyper Dragon Cannon" by banishing its materials.
  29. Effect of "Hyper Dragon Cannon" to banish itself and summon "X-Head", "Y-Dragon" and "Z-Metal"
  30. Summon "XYZ-Dragon Cannon" by banishing its materials.
  31. Summon "A-to-Z-Dragon Buster Cannon" by banishing its materials.
Ends on: "A-to-Z Dragon Buster Cannon" (with four cards in hand), "Cyber Dragon Infinity", and "Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax", with "Union Activation" in Graveyard (granting the option to summon "Beast King Barbaros" on the opponent's turn).

A-to-Z DeckEdit

ABC-focused Decks focus on using the ABC monsters to Special Summon "ABC-Dragon Buster", and use its effects to disrupt the opponent and generate follow-up. Each "ABC" monster has a (non-once per turn) effect when sent to the field to the GY, and give protection to the equipped monster.

Monster GY Trigger Effect Equip Protection
A-Assault Core Add 1 other Union monster from your GY to your hand. Unaffected by your opponent's monster effects.
B-Buster Drake Add 1 Union monster from your Deck to your hand. Unaffected by your opponent's Spell effects.
C-Crush Wyvern Special Summon 1 Union monster from your hand. Unaffected by your opponent's Trap effects.

By repeatedly searching and summoning using "B-Buster Drake" and "C-Crush Wyvern", the swarmed monsters can be used for Link play, then banished from the GY to summon "ABC-Dragon Buster". The Fusion monster can then tag out to summon its 3 pieces, enabling the effect of all 3 "ABC" monsters and another summon of "Dragon Buster".

Once the XYZ monsters were retrained they became a key part of the strategy, along with the ABC monsters, for Union/Contact Fusion combos. Each of the XYZ retrains can equip appropriate LIGHT Machine Union monsters from outside the field to generate advantage. For Y and Z, this effect is not once per turn, allowing for reuses to generate large amounts of advantage (especially when combined with the ABC monsters).

Monster Equips from
X-Cross Cannon Main Deck
Y-Yare Head Hand or GY
Z-Zillion Tank Banished cards

The addition of the monsters allows the usage of "Union Controller" and "X-Cross Cannon" as extra searchers and combo enablers, and grants access to the "XYZ-Hyper Dragon Cannon" boss monster, as well as easy access to Tribute Summons on the opponent's turn - enabling a board wipe via "Beast King Barbaros". However, each of the XYZ retrains lock the player to only summoning LIGHT monsters from the Extra Deck.

In addition to these, there are also the VW duo of monsters, and their combination with the XYZ, however these monsters have no advantage-giving effect, and their Fusions require banishing from field (not GY). Due to these weaknesses, competitive versions of the deck will generally not include the VW cards, with them being suited only for casual play.

TriviaEdit

  • They are said to be rare cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, as they are among the cards stolen by Vellian Crowler.
  • Despite being called A-to-Z, this series lacks D-to-U monsters.
    • However, the Japanese name of the anime-only card "Dimensional Catapult" contains the letters "STU" (short for "Super Thunder Unit"), the three letters before "VWXYZ".
