Set
To Set (Japanese: セット Setto) is to place a card face-down on the field. Setting can be performed either by the player or by a card effect.
In the player's turn, during the Main Phase in an open game state, the player can Normal Set a Monster Card from their hand to a Monster Zone, or Set a Spell or Trap Card from their hand to a Spell & Trap Card Zone or a Field Zone (for Field Spell Cards). Pendulum Monsters cannot be Set in the Pendulum Zone as Spell Cards.
A monster card that is Normal Set is put into the field in face-down Defense Position, i.e. horizontally. Each player can only perform 1 Normal Summon or Normal Set per turn. Normal Setting a Level 5 or higher monster is known as a Tribute Set, and requires Tributing another monster(s) the player controls. Spell/Trap Cards that are Set are are placed vertically.
Flipping a card on the field face-down (such as by the effect of "Book of Moon" or "Scrap-Iron Scarecrow") and Special Summoning a monster in face-down position (such as by the effect of "The Shallow Grave" or "Magical Hats") are both forms of Setting.[1][2]
If a monster is Set in a Monster Zone by a card effect, and is not being Normal Set (e.g. via the effect of "Toadally Awesome"), it is also being Special Summoned face-down.
