Activities at YSJSU
Through our societies and sports clubs, you can meet like-minded people and fill your social calendar with incredible events. We have over 50 activities for you to get involved in, from Musical Production to Mountaineering and everything in between. With the range of activities at York St John Students’ Union, we empower students to socialise, travel across the country, learn new skills and more!
We also offer dedicated student networks, including BAME, LGBTQ+ and Disabled Students Networks, where you can connect with others, share experiences, and find a strong sense of community and support. These networks work alongside our activities to make sure every student feels represented and included
If you’re struggling to find an activity for you, the Students’ Union will give you the support you need to create a new one. We’ll ensure that this process is as easy as possible, and we’ll continue to support the development of your activity.

Sometimes, SU-affiliated societies and clubs are unable to fill their committee roles. When this happens, the group becomes available for adoption. That means you have the chance to adopt the group and lead it yourself!
In order to adopt a society or club, you’ll need at least three committee members to take on the roles of Chair, Vice-Chair, and Treasurer. You’ll then need to complete some straightforward paperwork and training before re-launching your group.

If there’s a group you’d like to adopt but you don’t have anyone to fill the other committee roles yet, get in touch with us – we might already have others interested in that group we can connect you to, or we could help you find more committee members to take it on!

Do you have a brilliant idea for a new society or competitive sports club? At YSJSU we’re committed to offering something for everyone, so we’d love to hear from you.
All our societies and clubs are run by current students with support from the Students’ Union. By affiliating your group with the SU, you’ll gain access to training and development, financial accounts, operational support with things like room bookings, finances, and events, and access to your Activity Dashboard to help you manage everything to do with your group.
To get started, you’ll need your idea and at least three committee members to take on the roles of Chair, Vice-Chair, and Treasurer. You’ll need to be clear on what your group is for and what it will do on a regular basis. Finally, you’ll need to ensure it meets our affiliation criteria. You’ll then submit your application which will be reviewed by a panel of students, supported by an SU staff member, who will decide whether your group meets the affiliation criteria.
