Things to cheer
1) Two very encouraging interviews I heard in the past 24 hours. One was on Fresh Air. W. Kamau Bell had some terrific things to share about both his comedy work and his observations about race in the U.S. I particularly perked up when I heard the following:
""When I started doing my solo show, one of my good friends, Martha, said to me, she's like, 'Kamau, you can't end racism and make sexism worse.'"
2) NPR did an interview with football players who are speaking out in favor of marriage equality and had encouraging things to say about changing attitudes in the sport.
"BLOCK: It's interesting 'cause we're talking about - what you're describing is a cultural shift within the NFL. But there are no openly gay, active NFL players. There are players who've come out as gay, after they've retired. What do you think it would take for a gay player in the NFL, to come out?
KLUWE: I think it just takes - it would just need to take more of us speaking out about the issue and showing that, you know, it's OK to come out. It's OK to be who you are because in the locker room, you know, we'll have your back."
AYANBADEJO: Yeah. I mean, I believe it's going to take the right city, the right organization, and the right timing. That's why we're so adamant about this, in speaking out, so we can help whoever the next young person is that comes out; so they can not only, you know, excel in what they're doing at work, but also excel as an individual. And in turn, they're going to make us a better place to live - and enhance everything."
3) The latest White Collar certainly had its moments of fan service. The moment where Peter tells Neal "I'm just trying to protect you" as the two hang on one another in the boxing ring led Mike to quote The Young Ones. Citing a discussion between one character and his father about actress Felicity Kendal the father said "I just want to protect her." To which his son quipped "I've never heard it called that before."
I do wish the series would find more for Elizabeth to do though. Pistachio gelato delivery aside (which made me laugh thanks to a recent post by ivy03!) she got to do the product placement scene of the episode. I sure hope, now that Neal broke up with Peter, that she gets a meaningful scene in the finale.
4) An interesting discussion of the LJ fandom diaspora and how there will never be a centralized space for fandom.
5) Am I that unusual that I generally eat dessert with two meals a day? I took a survey recently that only allowed me to choose once a day or less frequently. Granted it's not every day but it's true more often than not.
