John (Work) Wark (1781 - 1823)

Biography

John (Work) Wark lived in Appalachia, in Ohio.

John was born in 1781 in Plymouth, Devon, England. He was the son son of John & Sarah Work/Wark^[1].

He married Sarah Boude in Baltimore, Maryland on February 2, 1808^[2]

Residence

• 1820 Chillicothe, Ross, Ohio - Possible record for John and the family, however it appears John wasn't captured as head other than his name (there is no mark in any of the age columns) ^[3].

He passed away in 1823.^[4]

Research

A John Work appears on the 1806 OH Early Census Index in Ross County, Ohio^[5] where John and Sarah later lived. However, this is prior to his marriage in Baltimore. Perhaps he already owned land in Ohio? More research is required.

The cemetery record index at Green Lawn available online does not list a birth or death date for John. There is a John Work, Jr and John Work, Sr. listed. The record spells the surname as Work (as well as for Sarah his wife); however, their gravestones spell it Wark. Perhaps this stone was added later - it could explain the discrepancy in the spelling and birth dates.

A John Wark immigrated to America and gave an Oath of Allegiance in New York on 12 Oct 1802. It is possible this could be the record for either John Jr or John Sr.^[6]
