Research Notes
As of November, 2002, Jacob Varner's tombstone was broken free from its base and found leaning against the fence in the back corner of Beulah Cemetery along with several other broken stones. The Varner graves are situated in the rear of the cemetery near the left corner. As of June 2023 the stone is no longer in evidence. There are some buried along the fence line.
The names of Jacob Varner's parents are not well documented. Some researchers offer the first name Wesley though that presentation is undocumented by any source other than the publication Varner, Verner, Werner families of America.[9] In the publication History of Muskingum County, he is named only Martin.[10] His official will uses only Martin.
Jacob Varner is named as the son of Martin Varner in his will.[11]
Jacob Varner is mentioned in the publication The Boundless Bounds Family.[12]
Some list Roxanna Sterling as another wife. There is zero evidence to support the assertion. The other marriage is undocumented. Jacob Varner's wife Rebecca Margaret Bounds lived until 1886. They had 12 children. All were born in Muskingum or Licking County, Ohio beginning in 1821 through 1844.
