Biography
William Sumner I (1650-1728) and Elizabeth had 5 known sons and a daughter:
- John JR (1690-1754); married Elizabeth;
- William II (1691-1736) married Bridget Sullivan;
- James (1695-1750) married Mary Blanchard;
- Jethro (1703-1753) married Margaret Sullivan;
- Dempsey (1714-1779) married Martha Baker;
- Anna (1715-1760) married Lemuel Riddick Jr. [1]
In deed documents, William I appears with his sons J and WM JR and Elizabeth Sumner JR.:[2]

William Sumner I had three sons with names beginning with J; therefore, J SUMNER could be John, James, or Jethro.
13 Nov, 1713. William Sumner, 266 acres of New Land in the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co: on both sides of the mouth of the Dark Pequoson (River?), coming out of Oropeak Sw; 13 Nov, 1713, begining near Stallings Corner to Kelly's land,to the mouth of the Myrie Branch and down Skitee's Branch. The importation of six persons: Samuel Woodward, Richard Evins, John Sutton, Alexander Blackiter, Peter Frank and Eliza, his wife.
Commentary: William Sumner was granted this land for providing the transportation for these people.
William Sumner received 266 acres of land in Nansemond City in 1713 for importing six people.[3]
