Joshua Slade was born about 1755 in Southampton County, Colony of Virginia, son of Samuel Slade (1723–1790) and Mary Unknown (~1720–~1801).
Joshua married Sarah Drewry. The had the following children:
- Rebecca Slade
- Miles Slade (b.~1792)
- Phoebe Slade Drake (~1794-1878)
- Amos Slade (~1797-1819)
The 1810 Census for Southampton County, Virginia, showed 7 household members.[1]

Transcribed Will
I Joshua Slate of Southampton County do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following Viz. I give my grandson Joseph Slate forty acres, to be laid off on the north side of the old plantation, to him and his heirs forever. I give unto my daughter Rebecca Slate the sum of five dollars. I give to my grandson Patrick Slate the sum of ten dollars. I give unto my daughter Phoebe Drake one feather bed and furniture, bed stead and ten dollars. I give unto my son Miles Slade all the rest of my lands and rent and residue of my property of every kind whatsoever not here before given away, out of which he is to pay all just debts, to him and his heirs forever. I do hereby constitute my son Miles Slade my only executor to this my Last Will and Testament, revoking all Wills and Testaments heretofore me made. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 16th day of October 1822. [signed by his X mark] Joshua Slate
