Charles Frederick Newcombe was a British botanist and ethnographic researcher known for his studies of the First Nations in Canada.

Charles Frederick Newcombe was born on September 14, 1851, and died on October 19, 1924.

He studied at the University of Aberdeen, from which he received his undergraduate degree in 1873, and his medical degree in 1878, and then practiced medicine in the Lake District.

Immigrating to the United States in 1884, he practiced medicine in Hood River, Oregon and, in 1885, he settled in Victoria, British Columbia, He worked at the asylum in New Westminster, British Columbia in 1889.

Returning to England, he studied geological and natural history at the British Museum and the University of London, ending his practice of medicine in 1894.

He began to focus on North American botany, making numerous trips to Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands), where he actively collected local artifacts for preservation.

He acquired totem poles for the British Museum, Kew Gardens, the Pitts Rivers Museum and the Royal British Columbia Museum, as well as museums in Cambridge, Liverpool and Sydney.

He also conducted biological and geographic research, such as on local (British Columbia) mollusks and paleontology and, in 1913, he headed a commission studying the effect of sea lions on the salmon industry. In 1914, he prepared a report on the circumnavigation of Vancouver Island.
