Kevin Wallace

Born at home in Adelaide Street, Blayney, N.S.W. on August 17, 1884; Arthur James Hutton was the eleventh child, to John Hutton and Ann Parry .

The registration took place on September 23, 1884, in Carcoar south-west of Blayney N.S.W. on the Mid Western Highway. John was the informant of the birth. He lists his occupation as a Labourer and birth-place is Scotland. John’s age at the time of the birth was 49, and Ann’s age was listed as 41 years. However John listed his age as 45years. The witness to the birth was W. Oddy. Previous issue of this couple are two males and five females living; two males and two females dead. After the death of Arthurs father, John Hutton (c1835), the Hutton family moved to Captains Flat. There are a number of newspaper articles which involve the family that nominate this address. Arthur worked in the mine in Captain’s Flat and was involved in a potentially fatal accident in late February 1900. The actual date of the accident is not nominated. Below is a news article taken from "The Maitland Daily Mercury" newspaper . The article was repeated in a number of other newspapers over the next few weeks. "LOCAL AND GENERAL ITEMS. Arthur Hutton, a boy about 15, employed at the Lake George Mines Company's cyanide works, Captain's Flat, fell into one of the vats containing cyanide solution. He was assisted out by another youth working close by. Emetics were immediately applied, and he is now reported to be out of danger."

Arthur married Lily May Kendall in Cairns, North Queensland, on August 9, 1913 . The marriage took place in The Manse, of the Presbyterian Church in McLeod Street, before James Kirke, Minister. Arthur’s occupation is listed as a Miner; age 27; birthplace is Blayney N.S.W. and his usual place of residence is Darwin. Parents are John Hutton and Annie Parry, with father’s occupation is Miner. Lily’s occupation is listed as Domestic; age 23 years; birthplace is Mount Morgan, and usual residence is Sydney. Parents are Benjamin Kendall and Annie Hennegan, with Benjamin’s occupation is Miner. Witnesses to the ceremony were Malcolm Kinlock Kirke and Rose Ann Stimpson. The Registerer was Arthur Edgar Aitkin, who listed the marriage on August 12, 1913. Now the “usual place of residence” of Arthur and Lilly brings up a couple of questions. What was Arthur doing in Darwin and who was Lilly staying with in Sydney. At some stage Arthur took up hairdressing. His brother William was a hairdresser, so he must have learnt off him. He had a saloon in Cabramatta, but when the family moved to Hornsby he sold or gave the business away. As a child I can remember Arthur cutting hair at the Barber Shop at Asquith. The building was demolished in 2013.
