Born in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut
Died at about age 85 in Mechanicsburg, Union Township, Champaign County, Ohio

Biography

1776 Project
Thomas Cheney served with 3rd Connecticut Provincial Regiment (1775), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

In 1775, Thomas enlisted in Captain Ephraim Manning's company, Colonel Israel Putnam's regiment, Connecticut Line. He enlisted May 29, 1775 and was discharged December 15, 1775. Thomas was in numerous battles. He emigrated to Harrison County, Virginia, where he reared his children. He later moved to Champaign County, Ohio.

Thomas took a very active part in numerous battles and particularly at the battle of Brandywine where he carried valuable information to General Washington. After the close of the war, he migrated to Virginia where he married Keturah Owen and raised a family.

The father, Thomas and two of his sons came to Champaign County in 1808. The old patriot Thomas died soon after coming to this country. One record states he died in 1811, another gives 1828 as the year of his death. He is buried in a small grave yard in Union Township.

Thomas was born in 1742. He passed away before 1828. Buried on small farm cemetery.

  • Note: The note below cannot be correct because Permelia, daughter of Thomas and Keturah, married 15 August 1785 in Harrison County, Virginia. She was married in 1785 and died before 1810 so the Permelia Cheney that some people are referring to is another Permelia Cheney.

"Some DAR members give 1811 as Thomas' date of death. Could this be correct? Permelia's marriage records (1826) have the consent by her mother, stating that her mother was her only living parent. The 1811 date is most likely the correct one because of the info on Permelia's marriage record. Marriage records of the other younger daughters need to be found in Champaign County to see if the consent matches Permelia's."
