Back and forth. Left to right. You watch Pope ride his skateboard with ease. The chunky baby on your lap watches her father with a big smile. She squeals when he waves at her.
You laugh, holding her up to kiss her cheeks, “You see your daddy? Huh? He’s so cool, huh, sweetheart?” You smother your sweet girl with kisses and she bursts into giggles.
Pope hears her and immediately is off the ramp and heading your way. He sits next to you on the bench, smelling of sun and sweat, but a smile on his face.
“Soon enough, you’ll be out there with me, huh, Emi?”
You snort, “Please, hopefully not any time soon.” You look down at your daughter, a perfect mix of you and Pope, “I can’t believe she’s almost a year old.”
He hums in agreement and runs a finger along her chubby cheeks, “Yeah, maybe stay a baby a little longer, yeah?”
Emilia, very much a daddy’s girl, smiles brightly up at her father. Her tiny hands reach out and Pope instantly takes her, “Okay, let’s see how these kids are doing, yeah?”
You watch as he stands and brings Emi closer to the skatepark that Pope bought and turned into his own. A place where kids are safe and have fun. A place where teenage him would’ve loved.
Just him and his two legacies: his daughter and the skatepark.
