Authors Note: So last chapter I just wanted to give context to the characters future behaviours and such. Also, I’ll be posting a little sporadically cause I have so much bloody school and I work quite a bit so I’m pretty busy, but I’ll try to make time for this as well :)

The sunlight in Gotham was vastly different compared to Smallville. For starters, in Smallville the heat would encompass you like a warm hug from the one you care about the most. Gotham sunlight usually just made you sweat and got everyone to leave their houses for a couple of hours to ‘enjoy’ the light.

Maybe that’s why Jason was drawn to Mina so much.

She was the warmest person he knew. Because after living with the knowledge that everyone’s love came with conditions, he was still trying to teach himself that hers didn’t; she saw him for who he was and loved him anyway.

***

“I swear to Rao, Jason” she declared happily, her smiling face poking towards Jason in the kitchen “It’s actually so nice, you should do it. I could take you!”

“I told you no, it freaks the fuck out of me,” he slurred through a mouthful of cornflakes. They had been discussing what they had been up to since the last time they’d seen each other. Sure, it was difficult for them to find time to spend together without arousing suspicion, especially Mina, but they eventually found ways around the suspicious eyes and pointed questions; their phone plans definitely were in dire need for an update now though. Mina had been recounting in great detail her new favourite hobby, way to clear her head, and her way to get away from her family when they got too much.

“Also, wouldn’t I die? You might have forgotten but I can’t actually breathe in space,” He added with a smirk.

“Okay, well obviously, but we’d figure it out. But you have to experience it, just floating in Earth’s lower atmosphere not even having to think about anything,” she sauntered over to him, wrapping her arms around his torso, “It would be so nice to do that with you, Jay. So romantic.”

Wrapping an arm around her, he placed a featherlight kiss on her forehead, he could only ever be this soft around her. The domestic moments with her were the only thing keeping him going lately; between tensions rising between rival gangs in Gotham and his family’s need to constantly be at each other’s throats, peace was hard to come by, but he managed to recharge when he was around her. She tucked herself further into him, burying herself closer into his chest, warmth radiating off her from her solar reserves.

To him, her love was always associated with warmth; physical and emotional. In moments like this, her love felt like a warm blanket. Other times, her loving smile simply was enough to convey her heated love.

He set his breakfast bowl down before slipping his arms around her shoulders which were clad in his smothering jumper, taking an inhale of her strawberry and violet scented shampoo. A moment of silence came over them before he had to break it with the inevitable question he needed to ask.

“So… where do your parents think you are this time?”

More silence; she always hated this question. Hated having to lie to family in order to even see her boyfriend, and he knew that.

“Told them I was going to be hanging out with Steph today, they didn’t exactly question me.” He pressed another kiss to her forehead, this time on the scar just above her eyebrow. It was a silent message to her, one that said I see you, I understand you, and I love you.

“Okay, baby.”

***

The pair had been dating for close to eight months at this point in time, having rekindled and stoked the flame of whatever minimal relationship they had before Jason had died. It wasn’t exactly hard for them to fall for each other: Mina had long since forgotten about the injury she had sustained at his hands the moment she heard about his demise, any minor animosity she held was then completely replaced with grief and regret. When Jason came back though, he was still riddled with guilt, about how broken he had left her, and still regretful about never telling her how she had him feel when he was 15.

Between the shared glances and sporadic conversations, they both came to the same conclusion: Being with each other had made them both feel more human.

They loved being with each other, they loved each other, there was no doubt about that…. They just had one issue.

If there was one thing that Superman didn’t mess about with, it was his little girl. Deep down he knew she was a strong woman and superhero, but he still saw her as the little girl who hid under his cape the first time she met the Justice League. Therefore, Clark still only saw Jason as a reckless teenager who left his darling girl with a permanent scar and reoccurring headaches. It didn’t matter to him that she had forgiven him completely (and was secretly in love with him), he still couldn’t stand him, having to be anywhere in his vicinity, he simply hated the guy. It was a completely stupid and out of character grudge, and maybe deep down he knew that, but he simply couldn’t let it go.

So when Mina and Jason officially became a couple, there was only one possible conclusion: There was no way in hell that Clark could find out and therefore they had to make the painful decision of hiding their love.

Jason knew that his friends and family wouldn’t be bothered with their relationship whatsoever, that they would more so be shocked that he had managed to get her to date him. Steph mightn’t be too happy but would probably be more excited that Mina might officially be her sister-in-law one day. Mina knew that despite her dad completely despising Jason, that her mum wouldn’t really mind. Sure, she knew that Lois didn’t approve of Jason’s methods of crime fighting, but she would still want whatever made her daughter happy even if it went against her morals and maternal instinct, and there was no doubt that Jason made her happy.

But some things are worth sacrificing for. And some things lead to moments like this one: The mid-morning sun shining through the window, the soft aroma of coffee filling the air, and two people intertwined on the couch, sharing loving words in the stolen moment.

***

Mina rested her head on Jason’s lap as the extended his legs to rest on the stained coffee table. For the last thirty minutes he had been reading to her, still amazed that she hadn’t bothered to read his favourite book yet, despite her ongoing university work.

“Okay, I think I understand why you love this one so much,” she mumbled softly.

“Took you long enough, it’s almost over,” He stared down at the last few pages of his tattered copy of Pride and Prejudice.

“To be fair, I’ve mostly just been listening to you talk, and not like, actually comprehending anything.”

He softly shut the book, placing his bookmark before leaning down and placing a light kiss against her lips, her lips curling into a beaming smile.

“I don’t know if I should be insulted or flattered.”

“How about whatever gets you to kiss me again,” she said, continuing to smile, “Cause I think that’ll work out the best for both of us.”

Her statement made a smile of his own grow on his face, little things like this is what made him fall for her all over again.

“Fine then, if you insist.” He whispered.

Lifting herself lightly, Mina pulled herself closer to him, settling down in his lap. His hands clutched her waist, pining her to down on him. Their lips met in an intimate yet domestic embrace, like this wasn’t something to be celebrated but to be expected; it was easy, practiced, tender.

His lips danced around hers, and her hands slipped into his hair, an amalgamation of their passion filling the room.

Too caught up in their passionate embrace, they neglected to pay an ounce of attention to anything other than each other. Despite even Minas super-hearing, she didn’t notice the key in the door, the handle twisting, the door opening, and the pair now standing in the kitchen.

“Ahem,” A small cough sounded from the adjoining room, breaking the couple from their trance like embrace.

They both snapped their attention towards the sound, Mina still straddled on his lap, Jason’s hands still grasping her waist. Both their eyes were ablaze with shock and confusion, settling on the two figures leaning against Jasons pristine countertop: Wally West and Richard Grayson.

***

For a moment no body moved, just stared at each other with wide eyes. An amused grin made its way across Wally’s face before being transferred onto Dick’s as well. Mina and Jason, however, did not find the situation as entertaining, mainly trying to think of an excuse as to why they were in this certain position without exposing their secret affair.

“Hey guys…..” Wally was the first to speak, the smile on his face could be heard in his words, he was fucking loving this. Jason dropped his head onto the back of the couch with a small thud, closing his eyes and trying to escape his body, escape this moment, and escape the inevitable truth that would be revealed. “You look cozy,”

Eyes stuck on the floorboards of her boyfriend’s living room, Mina didn’t want to face reality. She had lied so much to her family, her friends, probably done irreversible damage to her most valued relationships and now, all that would amount to nothing just because they were too caught up in the moment to notice their own surroundings.

Realising the compromising position they had been found in, she suddenly had a desperate need to be anywhere else than where she was. Slowly, she inched her way up and out of his lap until she was floating roughly a foot above the ground. Her eyes split up from staring daggers at the floor to gently glancing at Dick and Wally.

“Hi,” she murmured, lowering to the ground “sorry, I didn’t know you would be here,”

Before anyone could say another word, Jason aggressively got up from the couch, slamming his feet down.

“Yeah, what the fuck are you doing here?” he sternly demanded, taking a towering step towards his brother. The Jason that Mina had been encompassed with just a moment ago was now completely gone, what was left was what the rest of the world got to see.

“Well, if you bothered to pick up the phone every once in a while,” Dick started, “you would know that we’re working a case and need your help.”

“Yeah, didn’t know you were having a little rendez-vous with Supergirl here,” Wally added.

Now in the background of the conversation, self-consciousness suddenly filled Mina. She wasn’t particularly close with Dick or Wally; she admired their work since she was young and now they were only going to view her as some bimbo who was sleeping with their brother and friend. Not to mention how they had been desperately trying to keep up their distant front.

“Wally, shut up,” Dick muttered, clearly seeing how Wallys comment irritated Jason and sparked anxiety in Mina.

“So what? You just decided that it was fine to show up here without checking with me?” Jason questioned the pair.

“Well, this is kinda important, and we couldn’t just wait around for your answer,”

Knowing that this conversation no longer pertained to her, Mina had to get out of there, “Okay, well I’m going to go, bye,” her voice tight and fast.

She quickly darted to Jason’s bedroom where her clothes were balled up on the floor, preparing to fly back home and telling her parents that Steph was suddenly busy. Jason quickly followed behind her, not before glaring at Dick and Wally who immediately made their way to eavesdrop on the couple.

***

His bedroom door softly shut as Mina began to pace in circles. She hadn’t been expecting Jason to follow after her, not exactly being in the headspace to talk too much…. But that wasn’t really an option right now.

“Okay, what the hell? I need to leave, like now, yeah?” she questioned him, the panic could be seen in her eyes and heard in her voice. Jason’s expression mimicked hers. She was typically the level-headed on in the relationship considering Jason’s temper, but that was not the case today.

“It’ll be fine, okay? We’ll figure something out,” half trying to reassure himself, half trying to convince her.

“Well what could we even tell them? They literally caught us red handed,” she retorted.

He pondered her response, knowing that his next sentence was not going to go over well.

“I think we just need to come clean about us,”

Her face dropped, knowing the consequences that would come with for their relationship.

“What do you mean? Tell them or tell everyone? Either way that’s risky as hell, even if we told them to keep it to themselves they’d obviously let it slip at some point,” She was beginning to panic, she knew that there was no coming back if they came clean, word would get out and then her dad would find out, and he’d go crazy and make them-

“We don’t know that yet,”

She gave him a blank stare.

“Jay, it’s Dick and Wally,”

“Fair point,” he grimaced carefully, “but what else can we do? I know this is shitty and terrifying and that you’re thinking way into the future,” she definitely was, over their time together he had developed the careful ability to read her like a book. He could always deduce her mood no matter the situation, this wasn’t a particularly hard moment to do this though; he could tell by the way she paced with just an ounce of superspeed, the way she averted her eyes, playing roughly with her hands, all a clear sign of her catastrophising. He made his way closer to her, wrapping his hands around her shaking wrists. “But none of what you’re thinking is going to happen, yeah? I’m sorry but I don’t think we actually have much of a choice now. They already know at this point, they saw, and it’s not like we’re gonna keep this a secret for forever, right?”

Her panicked eyes stared at his own, grateful that he was able to see reason when she wasn’t able to. Curling into him to relish in the closeness they shared before it was revealed to the two men who were desperately trying to hear the conversation from the other side of the door.

“Okay fine, but you’re doing the talking and making sure that they don’t blab to anyone,”

“You got it, baby,”

***

As soon as they heard movement from the other side if the door, Dick and Wally were sprinting to the lounge room, trying to remain as inconspicuous and innocent as possible as if they weren’t unsuccessfully eavesdropping on the couple.

Mina and Jason made their way down the hall to where Dick and Wally were, tyring to act like they weren’t anticipating hearing about the details surrounding the unlikely couple. She appeared as she had before her abrupt departure from the room earlier: detached and embarrassed. Jason still looked as confident as ever, if anything a little cocky. But the façade he put on couldn’t hide the annoyance and what appeared to be dread which lingered beneath the surface.

“Welcome back,” Wally sarcastically smiled as the pair sat down on the opposite end of the couch, hands intimately entwined in plain sight of the intruders.

Silence.

“Jay? Are you just going to sit there and stare into space?” Dick questioned cautiously, treading lightly around the obviously sensitive matter.

“Shut the fuck up, Dick, this is all on you,” he glared daggers at his brother. Mina gave his hand three quick squeezes, attempting to quietly ground him and return him to their original goal. He paused for a moment, silently recounting the script they had developed.

He took a breath.

“Yeah, so, we’ve been together for eight months,” he murmured, quick and simple and straight to the point.

“Together as in….?” Wally questioned.

“Dating,” That unexpectantly came from Mina, who had been completely closed off thus far.

Another brief silence engulfed the room, Dick and Wally had expected something along those lines, maybe not them being together for that long, or the fact that they classified whatever they had as a relationship and weren’t just two people who enjoyed having sex with each other.

“…...cool. How’d that start? Didn’t think you too were that…..into each other?”

“Yeah, and how come you’ve never mentioned this before? Like, Jay, I know we’re not super close, but I kinda expected you to tell us if you were in a serious relationship,” Dick uttered towards Jason, a hint of pain embedded in his words.

This statement had infinitely more impact towards Mina than it did Jason. More than anything, she felt guilty, guilty for putting him in this position where he had to hide a now vital part of his life from his family. Sure, he wasn’t the closest with his family, but they were working on their relationship. Now, she was terrified that their secret, the secret she had dictated, would set back all the work Jason had done to work through his familial trauma.

“Don’t think you’re special, it’s not like we’ve told anyone yet,”

“Okay, why not? You’re both heroes, it’s not exactly strange,” Dick ranted on, “Bruce would probably be thrilled that you’d found someone, and it’s not like this is controversial or anything, nobodies gonna go and-”

“They will, okay?” Jason quietly spoke yet firmly, and let out a long, annoyed breath, “The only reason we haven’t told anyone is because we can’t let her dad find out about us,”

Jasons words finally had an impact on both Dick and Wally, and things made sense finally. They both knew about Clark’s animosity towards Jason, it was kind of a known secret amongst the hero community. About how Mina had been injured by Jason only a month before his death, and her being the darling she is, was riddled with guilt for years about how she had let him die thinking she hated him. About how Clark still wouldn’t let Mina attend Wayne Manor, about how Jason was just about the only vigilante that Clark openly expressed hostility and bitterness towards, hell, he wouldn’t let any member of his family work with him. It was a deep hatred, petty? Definitely, but nonetheless it was an understatement to say, Superman hated Red Hood, but he hated Jason Todd more.

***

“You’ve gotta understand, okay? You can’t tell anyone,” Jason pleaded to the room. He didn’t have to explain to Dick or Wally why anyone finding out would be shit, even if they told the most menial person, they knew without a shadow of a doubt, that word would get back to Clark.

“Yeah, yeah, sure,” Dick agreed while Wally vehemently nodded his head.

The atmosphere in the room radiated a sense of naked vulnerability mixed with tension. Dick loved his brother completely, perhaps their relationship was a complicated one, but there was no denying that what he felt for Jason was love. And right now, he wasn’t sure he’d ever seen his brother caring so deeply for another. It wasn’t something loud, throughout this whole interaction barely any words were exchanged between Mina and anyone, yet Dick could see just how much Jason cared for her, and her him: The small touches, barely there glances, the look in both their eyes that said I love you more than I can plainly communicate, but I will work everyday to try and show you.

He could see how they balanced each other out: Mina, her being a wonderful hero who always sees the best in everyone yet isn’t naïve. She’s a tough fighter and unbelievably intelligent. Jason? He’s brutal and harsh and barely hesitates before he places a gun to another mans head. They’re almost polar opposites, and somehow, that was what seemed to make them work. She stops him from being totally irrational, and he seems to bring her out of her shell.

But it hurt Dick terribly that this love is something that they have to keep hidden.

“You’re sure that your dad would freak out completely if he found out? I know he’s not the biggest fan of Jason, but he makes you happy, surely that’s enough for him to forget any dumb thing from years ago?” Wally spoke animatedly, more optimistic than anyone else in the room.

“Wally, I know it’s stupid and he stupid for holding such a grudge, but I know my dad, and I know he would fucking punch Jay into the sun if he found out,” she answered honestly and with more confidence and conviction than she’s had since they showed up, hating the answer but knowing it was the truth.

“Okay then, no one finds out,” Dick agreed, relaxing back into the couch.

“What shame though, you two are so cute,” Wally attempted to lighten the mood…..unsuccessfully.

“Shut the fuck up, Wally,” Jason quipped.

Authors Note: heyyy, as you might have noticed chapter 1 was mainly establishing dynamics, this’ll go more into the characters lives and the plot. In chapter 1, I briefly mentioned how Mina gets a paycheque from the government for her superhero work, I didn’t explain that part very well (oops) but in short, its supposed to be a similar situation to the GDA in Invincible: she fights to keep Earth safe, they pay her for it. And, yeah, we’re not talking about the fact that Clark didn’t even appear in the last chapter; I’m well aware (he’ll be here soon, pinky promise)

It was a common bedtime request from Mina when she was little; to hear how her mummy and her daddy fell in love with each other. From that story, she learned how to view love. For what felt like the longest time, that’s the only way she thought people fell in love: meet, get to know each other, become friends, spend time together, develop mutual feelings, act on them, get together, fall in love. If only she knew that that was rarely the case, that it was rarely that simple, and that that wouldn’t happen to her. To that little girl, the world was so simple, a prince would someday sweep her off her feet and they’d live happily ever after. Well, as we already established, that rarely happens.

***

Five Years Ago

It was sad, really, that this was Mina’s first sleepover at the ripe age of thirteen. I mean, that was what most people did when they were eight or nine years old. She obviously knew that she wasn’t a typical child though, she knew that she was half Kryptonian (if the flying and super strength didn’t give it away) and she knew that would mean her life was different from most. But come on. In order for this to even happen, Clark had to have a thorough conversation with her friend’s father, and even go to the house beforehand to ensure everything was safe. Now, this doesn’t sound too out of the ordinary for a father to do for their daughter, and it usually wouldn’t be. However, considering that her friend’s father had saved Clark’s life on multiple occasions, sent a bouquet to Lois when Mina was born, and happened to be fucking Batman……..Yeah, it was overkill. When visiting Wayne Manor a couple months ago, Mina happened to run into one Stephane Brown, and it wasn’t difficult to see how the pair became such fast friends. They could match each other’s energy, they would keep up with one another, and well, neither of them had been particularly lucky in the friend’s department previously. “Okay, you’ve got a phone, you know the direction to fly home if you need to,” Clark counted off, packing last minute supplies into Mina’s backpack “Your allergy card, you need to make sure to give this to Mr Alfred when you get there, and…. An extra pair of shoes. I think that about does it,” His words sounded far more confident than he was. He knew Bruce, he knew him well, and he knew that he would never harm his daughter in any way, but that didn’t stop him from worrying. She was still his little girl, and she was special; not only to him, but to the world. And if anything happened to her, ever, he wouldn’t know what to do. And he sure as hell wouldn’t forgive himself. “And, Sweetie,” he crouched to her level and placed a firm hand on her shoulder, “I know you’ve been having trouble with it lately, but you have to make sure to keep your laser vision under control. Mr Wayne’s welcoming you into his home, but he surely wouldn’t be happy with laser burns on his walls,’’ “I know, Dad,” her dark brown eyes, meeting his sparkling blue, “Can we go know though? I don’t wanna be late,” With that, she said her goodbyes to her mum little Jon. And then they were off, becoming smaller, and smaller little specks in the vast Kansas sky.

***

Gotham was exactly how she remembered: Stinky and gross. Why anyone would voluntarily live there was beyond her. However, there was one place in Gotham that she actually liked, and that was Wayne Manor. She’d been there a handful of times before, sometimes assisting her dad with missions involving Batman, and sometimes having playdates with Steph. Although, they would usually spend their time in Smallville, Clarks orders. He suggested having their sleepover there, of course, but lately Jon was being a whiny little bum in Minas words (which she later got scolded for) and had begged for weeks and weeks about how they couldn’t have fun with him around and how the Manor was so much more fun than the farm (Yes, Clark did take great offense to that). The Manor loomed in the distance, casting a shadow over the city and housing its protectors, not that the cities inhabitants would ever know. Ignorant bliss. Clark sharply knocked on the front door, a firm hand clasped on his daughters’ shoulder as a wide smile spread across her face. Within the second, the hefty door was eased open by none other than Alfred Pennyworth, looking as pristine as ever. “Hello Mr Kent, hello Miss Kent. How are you doing on this fine day?” he lightly questioned, his classy accent dancing across his words. “I’m good Mr Pennyworth, I’m having a sleepover with Steph!” Mina exclaimed, bouncing off the balls of her feet. “As I’ve been told,” he crouched to her level, “why don’t you bring your things upstairs and meet Steph?” She whipped around to now be facing her father, youthful joy gleaming in her eyes. “Bye, Dad,” she hurried, giving him a chaste hug “I’ll see you tomorrow,” Before she could get more than two feet away from him, Clark stopped her with a glaring look and embracing her with a firm grip. “Not so fast, Sweetie,” he warned, “you will make sure to behave for Mr Bruce and Mr Pennyworth, you will call me if anything happens, okay? And you will be careful with your powers,” Clarks arms embraced Mina in a warm, comforting hug, one that he had given her everyday before school, before work, and before a mission. He knew it was stupid, but he was worried. “Okay, Dad,” she spoke into the hug, “I love you,” “I love you too, Sweetheart,”

***

“OMG how did you even do that?!” The usually desolate Batcave, with its dripping rock walls, consistent chill, and echoing silence, had now been transformed into something out of Bruce Waynes nightmares: A teenage girls sleepover hangout. “I don’t know! I just can!” Mina giggled in reply to Stephs astonished reaction to her doing an impossible flip on the training mats. “You have to teach me to do that! Do you know how jealous Dick would be if I could do a flip that he couldn’t? Pretty please?” Steph grovelled with a desperate look on her face, making what Mina said next fill her with regret and guilt. “I’m sorry, Stephie,” she looked towards the ground, “but I can’t teach it, I have to use my powers to do it,” She knew she shouldn’t have to feel guilty about this, that it wasn’t her fault. But still, she couldn’t help but feel like the people around her where thinking she was showing off. Because she wasn’t, she was just playing around and the thought that just being herself and having fun would cause others to feel badly about themselves? That ate at her. “Ugh, fineeee,” Steph complained, clearly not bothered by the news, causing Mina to release an anxiously held breath. No harm done. Mina had said goodbye to her dad roughly four hours before, rushing through the Manor doors up to Stephs room. She had said her hellos to Mr Wayne and had her lunch, swam in the pool, and now, eventually moved to the Batcave. It was safe to say, they would never have had that much fun in Smallville. “Okay then, what other cool things can you do then?” Steph questioned her. Mina raced through her memoires, trying to remember the coolest thing she was able to do, when she suddenly remembered the trick her dad taught her a couple months ago. To do it, all she had to do was fly up really high, and then -- BANG The door which leads to the main area of the Batcave slammed shut against the solid rock. Obviously, many people lived in the Manor, so there was basically zero guarantee that they would be able to hangout in the Batcave without interruption. This fact didn’t particularly annoy Mina; she liked everyone in the house and the thought of having a big family filled her with envy. Steph on the other hand, thought that this was the most inconvenient thing to ever happen and was just about ready to attack anyone that walked through that door, even the Bat himself. “You better not be forcing your friend to perform for you, Steph,” the booming voice of Dick Grayson echoed around the vast chamber as he came into view of the pair, familiar faces trailing behind him. “I wasn’t, Dick! But you should see what she just did! It was actually so insane, and like I don’t think you would even be able to do it either,” Steph countered back to Dick and the group behind him.

Mina trained her eyes of those staring at her, observing her, wondering what Steph was talking about. She was able to recognise them all: There was Koriand’r (Mina was pretty positive her and Dick were dating), Jason Todd, Wally West, and Roy Harper. She hadn’t met actually met any of them properly, but she was at least familiar with them, hearing stories here or there. She locked eyes with Kori briefly, exchanging a warm smile before her attention was drawn back to Dick and Steph conversing wildly. “Really? I think that you’re getting a bit delusional, Steph. Oh, and last I checked, you couldn’t even do a cartwheel,” Dick bantered with Steph; typical sibling behaviour, really. “Yeah, well, we’re not talking about me, are we? No! We’re talking about Mina, you know, Supergirl? She’s a literal alien-” “Half-alien,” Mina interrupted, she hated when people got that wrong, like her mum counted for nothing and that she was just an extension of her father. The room sat silent for just a moment, Mina’s interruption forcing a wave of awkwardness within the room. Embarrassment consumed her, feeling the many pairs of eyes draw needles into her skull. “Yeah, sorry,” Steph murmured to Mina, being quiet enough so that the others could barely hear her. Still, Mina was forced to be more self-conscious than usual. These people in the room, she admired them, she looked up to some of them, she wanted to be some of them; now they just saw her as a whiny child. “So, Mina” Dick spoke, crouching down on the mat next to the two girls, “What was the flip you did?” Mina pondered the question for a moment, not knowing how to answer properly. “Uhm…I don’t really know, I kinda just figured it out one day,” the silenced that followed was piercing, egging her on to elaborate, “But, it’s a bit like a Triple Full, an Arabian, and a Double Back Layout mixed together,” Dick met her hesitant eyes, a wide grin spreading across his face. “Mina that’s insane. How the hell do you manage that?” He questioned the younger girl, beckoning the others to join them on the mat, which they do with haste. “Well, I kinda just have to use a bit of my superstrength and flight, and after that, it’s pretty easy. I guess that’s cheating a little though,” she replied, meeting the eyes of the other surrounding her, feeling more comfortable by the moment. “Who cares, you gotta show us now,”

***

Night had fallen over Gotham when Mina realised how much of a turn her sleepover had taken. Originally, her and Steph had planned to bake and decorate cupcakes with way too many sprinkles, do makeovers, visit and play with all the animals that were kept on the grounds, play truth or dare, and have a movie marathon of the cheesiest rom-coms they could find. But now, she stands in the middle of the Batcave training arena, sweat slicking through her hair, and determination filling her eyes. After a brief demonstration of her skills, her and the others had decided that they best thing for them to do was to engage themselves in basic training and sparing……yay. If she wanted to train she would’ve stayed at the farm. “Come on, Mina! On the mat,” Kori yelled out, At this point in time, Mina had already spared with Steph, Dick, and Kori. She had obviously won the fights between both Dick and Steph, although greatly holding back her powers, she was still a powerful fighter but also, it was never a guarantee that she could fight entirely human; she always held back, afraid to hurt her opponent, but she could never wholeheartedly contain her powers. However, when fighting with Kori, Mina struggled. Mina was a strong fighter, there was no doubt about that, but so was Kori; but she was more battle experienced, obviously, compared to Mina. Their fight had ended in a tie, neither wanting to maim the other. With Roy and Wally having left hours ago, that left her with one opponent left: Jason. She didn’t know that much about Jason’s abilities, he had been Robin for years at this point, recently having turned fifteen, but apart from basic knowledge about him, they weren’t too familiar with each other. She made her way to the sparing mat, rolling her shoulders out, trying to loosen her joints for the encroaching fight. He came into her view, a couple inches taller than her, broader than her, weaker than her. She squared up as they met in the middle of the mat, focusing on remaining relaxed and calm, therefore forcing herself to scale down her powers immensely. He raised his fists as well, locking his gaze on hers, doing the exact opposite of her; instead of calming down, he psyched himself up, instead of relaxing, he analysed her for weak spots. She needed to be weaker; he needed to be stronger. He was the first to lung, attempting to fake a punch and trap her arm behind her back, no surprise, he failed with that. Afterwards, trying to sweep her legs in the moment. This move did cause some confusion for her, but not enough to break her defence. They went on like this for a while, him attacking while her defence remained steady. His frustration was peaked, wanting to get at least one punch on her, but no matter how much he tried or implemented his intense training, she blocked every single hit he put on her. Not to mention, she was barely even trying and was yet to throw a single punch or kick at him, it almost seemed like she was playing with him. But even worse, he knew that she wasn’t; they weren’t that close, only having interacted a few times due to their similar age and fathers’ relationship. He knew that there was no way that she would purposefully tire him out to win a fight, he knew that she was just simply a good person and didn’t want to cause him any harm. Not to mention, she laughed and smiled. Despite being a powerful force, she was just clumsy; every time she would slip up or make some sort of mistake she seemed to find it somehow amusing. She would smile and laugh and meet his eye, an endearing glance seeming to throw him off his game.

After around seven minutes of hit-dodge-hit-dodge, Jason had finally had enough. “Ughhh fight back! Come on, I know you could kill me, so hit back!” This caught her off guard, she had assumed that they were more so just playing around like her other fights before. Apparently not, he wanted a real fight. “I don’t want to hurt you, Jason,” She met his eye, dead serious and her guard down. He took that distraction as his golden opportunity. He made a running attack on her, crouching down and wrapping his arms around her thighs and tackling her down hard. Her head hit the ground at full force, her body falling almost at a vertical angle due to his low grip. The worst part was, as they had danced around the mat previously, they had eventually stepped off the padded floor, leading her to fall on the hard, solid rock floor of the Batcave. Due to his anger and frustration, Jason had used his full force when attacking, not stopping to use the rational part of his brain. The room was dead silent for a moment; no one moved except Jason as he stood from the ground. “AHHH,” her voice came out strangled and muffled as the tears started to fall down her cheeks, rolling slightly to her side as the wound on her hairline started to pour blood. She started to sob. Dick was the first to move. The others had been watching the two fight from the sidelines, just observing. They rushed over, kneeling down to her level, Jason didn’t move, it was his turn to observe now. “Hey, hey, Mina,” Dick called out tenderly, “Stay awake yeah? You’ll be fine, okay?” Mina didn’t care, she wasn’t listening. She knew that she had let her guard down, she was tired out from the other sparing sessions from before along with the training as well, and she shouldn’t have agreed to the fight, but she just really wanted to, she wanted to prove herself; a hell of a lot that did for her. “How was she hurt by that?” Jason asked, panicking completely, “Isn’t she supposed to be, like, indestructible or something? I didn’t even hit her that hard,” “Yes, you did!” Steph called out from her friend’s side, “And she can obviously get hurt! Are you that dumb? Why would she be ‘indestructible’?! It’s not like she’s Superman or something, she’s human too!” She was obviously furious with Jason; this was supposed to be a fun hang out with her friend, and now said friend was fighting consciousness as she bled on the ground. Dick quickly fell into his leader mindset, he ordered Kori to go get Bruce, Steph to get the first aid as he attempted to sooth and keep Mina awake. Again, Jason just stood there.

By the time Bruce was found and had made his way down to the Batcave, Mina had calmed down and the bleeding was slowing. She was still dizzy and was ordered by Dick to stay laying on the ground. “What the fuck happened down here?” he called as he entered into the space, analysing the scene before him. “Jason and Mina were sparing, and he got a pretty hard hit on her,” Dick replied. “Yeah, I can see that,” he sarcastically replied, no doubt thinking about how Clark was going to react when he returned his precious daughter, bloodied and bruised. After a few minutes of careful teamwork, Mina no longer had blood falling into her eyes and the room was no longer spinning. They wrapped her head in a thick layer of gauze, and she was given a high dose of meds for the pain and to limit her dizziness. She was hauled upstairs and placed on the couch in the main foyer with an icepack on her head. “Are you feeling better?” Steph asked from her left side, just in her peripheral vision, “Bruce’s calling your dad to come pick you up,” Silence filled the room again, Mina wanted to reply of course, she didn’t want to be rude…. but she just felt so exhausted. She knew that Jason wouldn’t have hurt her on purpose, especially not to this scale, he just wasn’t like that; he was a hero. “Jason’s such an asshole, isn’t he? Like what did he expect to happen? Literally so dumb,” Mina couldn’t help but agree, he was dumb. He was careless and acted on his emotions rather than his logic. A trio of footsteps made their way into the room, belonging to who she assumed was Dick, Kori, and Bruce. “Hey, are you doing any better?” Kori’s voice asked, concern threaded through her words. Mina didn’t want to reply, she knew that it would need too much effort and would hurt her throbbing headache, but she also knew that she couldn’t just shut down and not communicate. “A little better,” she whispered in reply, not wanting to elaborate. “Listen, Mina,” Bruce said after a moment of silence, sitting on the armchair directly in front of the couch she laid on, “I called your dad and he’s on his way now. I will preface this by saying that he is quite upset and may be a bit…intense when he gets here. I’ve talked with Jason and he is very apologetic for what he did and truly didn’t mean to injury you, he just wasn’t really thinking that’s all,” The room now fell back into silence; a pin drop could be heard in the hostile environment. That was, until the doors to the Manor burst open with a gush of wind and suddenly Superman was standing directly over Mina.

“Oh Sweetheart,” he muttered, placing a gentle hand to her forehead. He turned quickly to face Bruce, “She is leaving with me now, and she will not come back to this house, especially around Jason,” The sternness in his voice startled everyone in the room; he was usually joyous and kind, Clark never spoke without his usual chipper attitude………except for now. Jason Peter Todd died one month later.

Three Years Later The viewing deck of the Justice League’s Watchtower was Mina’s favourite spot in the whole place. What she liked the most about it was how it put things into perspective; she could see the whole world, her world, staring back at her…. And for one moment, suddenly her problems weren’t that big. The doors behind her opened and a presence filled the room. It was unfamiliar yet comforting. She didn’t move from her place, didn’t look around to see who it was that had just intruded on her moment of recollection. But it turns out, she didn’t have to look. Beside her now stood a man. He wasn’t known to her yet, but he soon would be. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” he asked her, his voice low and rough. “Yeah,” she replied simply. Not wanting to be rude, she turned on her heel to face the man. He looked familiar, he was broad and towered over her in height, his eyes, blue with a tinge of the most indescribable green, flashed with recognition…..glancing at the white scar on her forehead. “Hey, Mina,” Familiarity History Years Guilt Death “Jason?” “One and only,”

The First Daughter of the Last Son

Chapter One

“Superman” - Taylor Swift

Summary: Clark Kent has always been a loving man, and his love only blossomed greater after his wife, Lois Lane brought their daughter into the world 18 years ago. Nowadays, Clark lives with his wife, their sons Jon (11y/o) and Connor (17y/o), and their oldest child, Mina Kent (18y/o). She takes after her father in more ways than one; she is courageous, kindhearted, and the definition of selfless….. and a people pleaser. Her mother on the other hand, handed down her brashness, her sarcasm, and her hard-headedness: leading to a lethal combination of a superhero.

Mina loves her family more than she could describe, but she has a secret, one that could lead to great conflict between her and her father. She will go to great lengths to keep her relationship and her family separate-but how much damage will she do in order to keep the peace?

Content: familial conflict, a bit ooc, original character, DC world, Clark Kent father, Lois Lane mother, angst, multiple parts, batfamily mentions, secret relationship, Jason Todd x OC, internal conflict, third person perspective, slight canon divergence

Word count: 1,870

Warning: swearing (I’m Australian, I can’t help it ) character conflict, description of injuries, description of battle/fights, suggestive content

Authors Note: so, this is my first fic on this account :), it’s planned to be multiple parts surrounding the original character of Mina Kent as she navigates superhero life, pleasing her family/parents, and keeping her relationship with the infamous Red Hood (Jason Todd). I’ve always been kinda inconsistent with posting cause of school and like life, but I’m planning to actually post this story consistently. I’ve no plan on how many parts this will be, just gonna wait and see.

Thanks, hope you enjoy

Do you remember what it was like the first time you lied to your parents? You were probably….. four years old? Lying about eating the last biscuit from the jar, or that you didn’t pull your sisters ponytail (which you totally did)? Well, for Mina Kent, the first time she lied to her parents she was eighteen years old, and it was terrifying. It’s not that she was a goodie two shoes, she was just a girl who trusted her mum and dad with everything. She believed that lying was something that guilty people did; it was plain and simple, you did something wrong, you lie about it. But the thing was, Mina rarely did anything wrong, and on the odd occasion that she did she always told the truth. She didn’t lie when she took her little brother, Jon, flying when he was barely being trained, she didn’t lie when her mum found half her make-up missing, she didn’t even lie when she snuck out to fight interdimensional monsters and ended up a bloody mess (To be fair, there was no hiding that one). Therefore, her parents were given no reason to mistrust her, because she hadn’t given them any reason to.

Smallville was eerily quiet to most, feeling almost desolate and deserted at times…. To most people. Luckily for the Kents, only 1/5 of them were truly people, whatever that counts for anyway. To the super-family, Smallville was a safe haven, a home away from the constant noise and calls for help. Here in Smallville, Clark, Mina, Connor, and Jon weren’t constantly overwhelmed by their super-hearing induced anxieties. Here it is quiet, it is familiar, it is home.

Within Smallville, the Kent family farm seemed like an ever-present monument, the fire-engine red barn stood out almost like a beacon, guiding its inhabitants’ home.

Within the kitchen of that house, was a ball of anxiety taking the form of Mina Kent, Supergirl, first born child of Lois Lane and Clark Kent, almost invincible. Yet oh so scared. Mina shifted her weight from foot to foot, standing strategically in the doorway as her mum prepares breakfast for their little family. Early morning sunlight spills through the worn through curtains surrounding the area. The sunlight should make her feel stronger, less vulnerable, and more reassured. It doesn’t.

At the table sat her youngest brother, Jon. He was barely conscious at this time of day, likely having spent all night flying around with their dad, saving those who couldn’t do it themselves. He had started developing his powers a couple of years ago and was now strong and controlled enough to be able to go along with Superman for patrols late into the night.

Jon was the one to spot her in the doorway, instantly perking up. Despite being eleven, Jon was still at that stage where he looked at his older siblings as if they were the epitome of cool.

“Mina! Look what mum made,” Jon exclaimed holding up his plate of pancakes “See, they have chocolate chips in them!” Feeling slightly more at ease, Mina makes her way to the worn wooden table and took her seat across from the younger boy. “Yum” she hummed quietly while giving him a light smile, “Someone’s looking tired, did you have a big night?” If it was even possible, he perked up even more, excited to rant to his cool older sister about what they’d gotten up to. “It was soooo cool, Mina. We went all the way to Gotham cause dad had to help Mr Wayne with something boring, so I just got to play with Damian the whole time! He’s teaching me how to throw knives!”

That last comment earned a blatantly concerned glance from Lois. On the other hand, Mina knew better than to pay it any mind. “Ooh, sounds fun,” she replied, more so out of obligation than interest. But still, she always wanted Jon to feel like she was as interested in his life as he was with hers. In her peripheral vision she could see her mum making her way over with a plate of pancakes, full of chocolate chips and doused in maple syrup. The plate was placed in front of her without a sound. “Moring, Darling,” Lois murmured, giving her daughter a light kiss on the forehead. “Hey mum, thanks for breakfast, this looks amazing,”

In that moment, everything was perfectly domestic. It was a known fact in the house that their lives were more complicated than most, but on mornings like this, it was easy to forgot they weren’t just a regular family. “My pleasure. Oh, and would you be able to drop the boys off the school today? Me and your dad have gotten head to Metropolis soon,” she said while glancing at her watch. Sure, it was amazing being able to live peacefully in Smallville, yet it did get rather annoying having to fly to and from places like work every day. Mina though for a moment. Of course she would take her brothers, that wasn’t what worried her, what worried her is what would be said in a moment. Upon hearing this request, Jon looked at Mina with those pleading eyes of his. As if she would ever say no.

“Yeah, yeah, of course,” she paused prepared herself for the lie that was about to pass through per lips, bracing herself to sound as normal as possible, “Yeah, but we’ll need to go soon. I’ve gotta go to Metropolis Library, I’ve got some assignments that I’ve gotta work on,”

Somehow, the lie came easily now.

“Sure. You heard her Jon, go get ready,” Lois replied instantly.

With that, he abandoned his plate of half eaten pancakes and flew up the stairs, yelling for Connor to hurry up.

Lois bought the lie. It’s not like she was comfortable lying to her mum, but it was just something she had to now. That’s what Mina told herself anyway.

It wasn’t all a lie either, she really did have to do her assignments. After she graduated from Smallville High as valedictorian the year before, she had insisted on going straight to Metropolis City University to complete her double degree in creative writing and psychology. Sure, she mightn’t be able to get the greatest job with those degrees but hey, her salary given from the government for being Supergirl could pay the bills for now.

Perks of the job.

“Bye, Mina! Bye, Connor! See you tonight!” Jon called as he practically sprinted out of the car, headed towards the school building. And just like that, before she could even reply, Jon was out of sight. “I swear that kid uses his superspeed way to casually, anyone could’ve seen him,” Connor huffed from the seat beside her, being in a particularly prickly mood this morning. He’d come into their lives roughly four years ago, and now he meshed into their family perfectly. He was her brother; there was no doubt about that. “Like you can talk,” she jokingly replied, “Do you not remember the time you jumped through that window in the middle of the pep rally?” He paused. Silence. “That was totally different.” “How so, Connor?” She sarcastically replied. There was no answer to that, he couldn’t answer that. “Well, it’s no different from when you used your flight for cheerleading in school,” he deflected. “Okay fair point,” This is what she loved about Connor, they weren’t just brother and sister, they were friends, they could talk to each other without thinking about being judged; but there were still things that you can’t tell everyone. And just like that, they were arriving at the high school. They said their quiet goodbyes before he shuffled out of the car and into torturous building. She was good at school, but god, you couldn’t pay her to go back there.

***

The wind whipped through her dark, auburn hair, the most freeing feeling the world Mina always thought. Nothing beat the feeling of weightlessly flying higher than the clouds, not having to worry about anyone but herself for just one, brief, moment. She didn’t bother to change into her super suit when she got home from dropping the boys off at school, she was feeling surprisingly carefree in the moment. A rare occasion. Eventually, Gotham city came into sight. A perfect birds-eye-view of the crime riddled city somehow eased her nerves for a moment. Because she knew what waited for her in the city, something that she had been thinking about for days at this point. The city welcomed her from above as the smell of smog and pure air pollution engulfed her. But she didn’t really care, her mind was somewhere else. Moving with straight muscle memory, she eventually found herself on the border of the Narrows, in front of an all too familiar window on the seventh story of a red brick building that was virtually falling apart. With practised ease, Mina slowly opened the window leading to the heart of the apartment. Bookshelves lined the far wall, a worn-down coach sat against the opposite wall, and the sound of a scolding shower from the next room filled her ears. She soundlessly floated through the window, closing it impossibly gently. Just as she sat down expectantly on the couch, the door to the bathroom swung open carelessly. She smiled to herself, praising herself for her perfect timing. He walked out of the bathroom with steps far heavier than needed. He stood with a towel low around his waist, exposing his V-line and larger than average frame for a man who barely steps foot in a commercial gym. His phone screen pushed up against his face, focusing on nothing but whatever it was he was looking at. He noticed nothing but the glowing screen, not the girl practically vibrating with enough energy to emit a soft glow around her outline. Perfect moment, she thought. “Hey, Jay!!” She lunged from her seat and flew up to his height, wrapping her arms tightly around him, essentially entrapping him. He jumped higher than she’s ever seen before, genuine terror in his eyes. She wanted to laugh so bad. “Jesus fucking christ! What the fuck is wrong with you?!” He exclaimed, panic and relief thick in his voice as he quickly realised who the Supergirl that was floating a foot off the ground was. She burst out laughing, full of nothing but adoration and affection for the revived man in her arms. “Oh, baby, I’m so sorry,” she laughed, meeting his eyes, “I couldn’t help it,” He gently guided her to the ground, hands gripping her waist gently. He smiled despite himself, the tinge of radioactive green in his eyes seemed to glow brighter in that moment. Without a word he brought his lips to hers. Him, rough, damaged, and imperfect: Her, light, loving, sunlight in human form. Meeting in the middle: a perfect storm. In that moment, the lying was worth it, he was worth it. “Missed you, Jason.” She murmured, lost in his smile, him lost in hers. “Well, I missed you more, guaranteed. But if you pull that ‘sneaking in to scare me at 9:00AM’ I won’t hesitate to pull kryptonite on you,” “…. You wouldn’t dare,” “Try me,”

That damn smirk.
