If you are a genuine shipper, you wouldn't look at someone else's opinion/ship and fucking hate them for it. You'd go 'hmm okay, that's one way of looking at it, fine. I prefer my ship but I don't hate you for liking yours.'
You eat your cake and I'll eat mine. If you come to me and shove your cake into my mouth because it 'tastes better', then yes, obviously I'm going to fight you. Who do you think you are for coming up to me and dumping your ideas onto me when I clearly didn't give a fuck?
guys i’m sorry but i HATED byler. it might just be because i like mileven more but idk. mike was also a bitch in the later seasons though so he didn’t really deserve any of them 😅😅 it’s just that i never understood why people thought it would happen when he was still dating eleven. that’d be kinda crazy if he just left her because he decides he wants to be with will now. also that would prolly upset el because i mean would be mad that their boyfriend left them for someone else. i feel like will would want to get with him if it made el upset. also i feel like byler takes away from will’s character. like i mean the fans do. cs it’s like he has sooo much backstory. he got sent to the upside down, his dad was shit, he’s struggling with his sexuality. he’s a well written character, but people only care abt him for a stupid ship??? this might be the reason i hate romance because i find that people only focus on that instead of angst or wtv 😭😭 also i kinda liked how when he was coming out it was like him realizing mike is his tammy. it’s not gonna work out and he doesn’t need to date him. he will find someone better!!
whole last season was shit though so doesn’t matter what’s cannon or not.
i’m a byler shipper mostly for the potential of what they could’ve been, but you’re absolutely right that the execution was garbage and Will got reduced to a plot device with a crush.
but i think the reason a lot of Bylers ship it isn't because we think canon Mike "deserves" Will or because we want him to dump El and ride off into the sunset. it's because we watched Mileven's specific dynamic and saw two people who genuinely love each other but are stuck in this loop where Mike only knows how to be a wall and El outgrew needing one.
before i continue, i need you to know i am not trying to call your ship out or make Byler sound better. i'm not. i'm only telling you my opinion since you did it too.
like, the thing about Mike is that his whole identity is built around being needed. El was perfect for that in season 1 because she literally needed protection, a home, someone to see her as human. but by the end? she's not that girl anymore. she has Max, she has Hopper, she has a life. and Mike doesn't know how to love her without being her savior. they keep reenacting season 1 because it's the only version of their relationship that ever made sense to him.
so when Bylers imagine Byler, we're not imagining Mike cheating on El or trading her in like a used car. we're imagining Mike actually having to sit with the fact that he doesn't know how to be in a relationship where he's not the protector. and Will? Will never needed Mike to save him. he needed Mike to see him. and canon Mike failed at that constantly, which is why i don't defend canon Mike lmao. but the potential of Mike learning to love someone without the savior complex, without the jealousy, without making it about his own identity? that's what draws people in.
and yes, will's character being reduced to a ship — you're absolutely right that fandom does that and it's annoying as hell. but i think that's a fandom problem, not a ship problem. Will having feelings for Mike doesn't erase his trauma or his upside-down arc or his shitty dad. if anything, the interesting Byler content ties it all together — Will spent his whole life being the kid who got lost, the kid who was possessed, the kid who was different. and Mike, his supposed best friend, kept looking through him. the ship isn't about Will getting a boyfriend. it's about Will finally being seen by the person whose approval he wanted most. and yeah, maybe Mike isn't worthy of that, but that's what makes it tragic, not fluffy. that's the angst you're looking for.
El being upset — valid, and any Byler fic worth reading makes Mike break up with El like a respectful human being first. not because Will is waiting in the wings, but because Mike and El aren't working anymore. she doesn't need a wall, he doesn't know how to be a door, and they both deserve to figure out who they are outside of that dynamic. El deserves that conversation too.
i don't think Byler is "better" than Mileven. i just think they're two different answers to the same question: what do these characters need to actually grow up? some people think Mileven could've gotten there if the writers had let them evolve. some people think Byler was the evolution Mike needed. at the end of the day we all got robbed by that finale, so i don't really see the point in fighting over which non-existent good version of the show we wanted. write fanfics, make fanart, and scream about it in posts. don't waste your time in ship wars.
if you read this and didn't actually hate me for it, thank you. we need more people like you.

I'm gonna say it, I do think that even the laziest person imaginable should have a roof over their head, food in their stomach, and access to healthcare
*genuinely absorbed zero information* got it
"this cast member doesnt like byler" gen why do yall think we care fandom is dead. this aint a popularity contest where we do things that ppl think is cool. this is fucking fandom shipping culture where we fight for what we believe in. suck my dick
perfect opportunity to finish with 'Mike suck Will's dick'. but idk i'm just weird.
