Program: Ultra Q  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Defeat Gomess! Air Date: January 2nd, 1966 An ancient parchment reveals that Gomess, a monster, will awaken and destroy the Earth when Littra, another monster, hatches from its egg. Soon, Jun Manjome (Kenji Sahara) and Yuriko Edogawa (Hiroko Sakurai) discover Gomess inside an underground cave. The Gomess suit is a modified Godzilla suit with added plates on its chest, a tusked mouth, a horned head, and hair.

Program: Ultra Q  Reference: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) Episode/Sketch: Goro and Goro Air Date: January 9th, 1966 The monster Goro is portrayed by the Kong suit with an added tail and ears.

Program: Ultraman  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: Charge Forth, Science Patrol Air Date: July 31st, 1966 Among other military vehicles, modified A-Cycle Light Ray Guns are sent to do battle with the monster Neronga. Neronga is portrayed by a modified Baragon suit from Frankenstein vs. Baragon (1965), with added antenna-like membranes, tusks, and yellow paint on its back.

Program: Ultraman  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: The Mysterious Dinosaur Base Air Date: September 18th, 1966 This episode's monster is rather familiar: a Godzilla suit with yellow painted on the chest, head, torso, and dorsal fins. A yellow frill is also added. It should be noted that stock footage from this episode appears in "Farewell, Ultraman" (April 9th, 1967).

Program: Ultraman  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: The Rascal from Outer Space Air Date: September 25th, 1966 When Gyango grows to giant size and begins its rampage, the Japan Self-Defense Force is called in to stop the monster. A Type 66 Maser Beam Tank and modified A-Cycle Light Ray Gun are seen among the various weapons.

Program: Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: Marry Me, Marry Me Air Date: September 16th, 1966 When Private First Class Gomer Pyle takes a romp through the local cinema lobby, a delightful array of publicity shots and posters reflect the kaiju-riddled 60's era in all of its awesome detail.

Program: Saturday Night Live  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode: Broderick Crawford/Levon Helm/Dr. John/The Meters Sketch: Baba Wawa at Large Air Date: March 19th, 1977 During the "Baba Wawa at Large" sketch, Gilda Radner's Barbara Walters parody interviews Godzilla.

Program: Laverne & Shirley  Reference: Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) Episode/Sketch: The Driving Test Air Date: February 21st, 1978 Godzilla references aren't immensely uncommon in Laverne & Shirley. Case in point, when Squiggy finds himself distraught due to his seeming inability to pass the written driving test, Lenny attempts to offer him a boost of confidence, during which an American poster for Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) can be seen in the background. It should be noted that the poster would be considered an anachronism, due to the fact that this Happy Days spin-off takes place about a decade before the release of Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971).

Program: Dr. Slump & Arale-chan  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: The Mysterious Dr. Monster?! Air Date: January 13th, 1982 Arale is lured to King Gidora Mansion, the name of which is a clear nod to everybody's favorite three-headed dragon. During the middle of the episode, Dr. Monsters begins to daydream of playing jump rope with Gamera and Godzilla.

Music Video: The Number of the Beast  Reference: Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) Artist/Band: Iron Maiden Air Date: March 29th, 1982 In Iron Maiden's music video for their song, "The Number of the Beast", several horror-related characters are interspliced with footage of the band performing. Godzilla makes an appearance in footage from Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964). He even shares a frame with guitarist Dave Murray during the solo.

Urusei Yatsura  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: The Great Space Matchmaking Operation Air Date: April 7th, 1982 Ataru gets into a small argument with some of his friends, Megane, Perm, Chibi, CrewCutt, and Mendo. Godzilla can be spotted amongst the classmates during the exchange. Later in the episode, on Lum's home planet, Godzilla is once again seen. Among Lum's many suitors are Godzilla, Giant Robo, Daimajin, Ultraman, Ultra Seven, Alien Baltan, a Xilien and a Gundam. This is neither the first time, nor the last time, that Godzilla would appear in this series...

Urusei Yatsura  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: Happy Birthday My Darling Air Date: April 20th, 1983 Lum accidentally forgets Ataru's birthday, sending the latter into a state of depression. Ataru goes to the arcade, where he plays a game. The objective is to fight Godzilla; however, the nuclear saurian isn't the only target, as Mothra, King Kong, Ghidorah, an Xilien Ship and Rodan also appear to be featured.

Program: Stop!! Hibari-Kun!  Reference: Godzilla Raids Again (1955) Episode/Sketch: Episode #13 Air Date: Mid to Late 1983 This anime features an homage to Godzilla Raids Again (1955). The scene in question takes place in a movie theater, complete with unmistakable near-sillhouettes of Godzilla and Anguirus on the big screen. Sadly, the battling kaiju ultimately suffer the rage of Hibari (who happens to be sitting in the audience).

Urusei Yatsura  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Oh! The Memories of Mother Air Date: August 17th, 1983 Ataru's mother has a series of dreams. Upon realizing that these are, in fact, dreams, she begins to take control. She sees herself inside her home, as Godzilla, Gamera and Alien Baltan all hang around outside.

Urusei Yatsura  Reference: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) Episode/Sketch: Blaze, Secret Powers! Stick to the Straight and Narrow Path Air Date: October 31st, 1984 At the risk of vanishing, Ataru (dressed as a girl) and Lum both appear onstage to perform puppetry with their hands. Their first rendering consists of Lum wiggling her fingers and Ataru holding out his hands to the side of hers, making it appear as though there were a three-headed dragon present. Of course, Ghidorah pops in to "say hello" (as a means to add to the visual).

Urusei Yatsura  Reference: Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) Episode/Sketch: Here Again! The Hunter of Love, Princess Kurama Air Date: August 1st, 1984 Princess Kurama, the princess of the crow goblins (which are known as Tengu), needs to find a mate to save her species. Her crow minions submit data for every male in the universe into a super computer, and it quickly flashes through all the potential mates. One such candidate happens to be Nebula Space Hunters M's very own Gigan! (Who knew he was single?)

Urusei Yatsura  Reference: Destroy All Monsters (1968) Episode/Sketch: Underground Reincarnation! What's Darling Thinking Of!? Air Date: January 30th, 1985 While Mendo, Ataru, Lum, and Shinobu travel to Mendo's new themepark/hotel on a far off island, Mendo daydreams of flying over Godzilla, whose escape is prevented by the same magnetic fields that were used to keep Rodan from wandering too far away from Monsterland in Destroy All Monsters (1968). This episode was released shortly after The Return of Godzilla (1984) and uses approximately the same suit design as the mid-80's film.

Urusei Yatsura  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: Snow Panic? The Mendo Family Cherry Blossom Display Banquet! Air Date: February 6th, 1985 After the whole city is sprayed with a special Juice from Lum's home planet, they begin to act out various roles. Kamen Rider, Hulk, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon appear at random times. Frankenstein can be seen holding Baragon over his head during the big pan scene, and not to far away, a mutating Matango is visible. Ebirah and Mothra can also be spotted in the background (note: requires squinting).

Program: Fight! Iczer One  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: Various Air Date: October 19, 1985 - July 23, 1986 The Self Defense Force launches super-sized flying battleships in each episode of the series. The Fuji 1 and Fuji 2 are an homage to the Gotengo, with the Fuji 1 having it's own maserlike weapon and the Fuji 2 boasting F86F Saber Jets with a drill and maser. Two weapons that are identical to the atomic heat ray guns from Mothra (1961) can also be seen assisting the Fuji 2 in its assault against Big Gold's fortress, Nova.

Program: Dragon Ball  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: Master Thief, Hasky Air Date: December 24th, 1986 In this episode, a master thief named Hasky is hired by the Red Ribbon Army to steal Goku's Dragon Balls. In Dr. Briefs laboratory, Baragon makes a cameo appearance (which gives a nearby Police Offer quite the shock).

Program: DuckTales  Reference: Godzilla Raids Again (1955) Episode/Sketch: Master of the Djinni Air Date: September 29th, 1987 While Scrooge McDuck and Flintheart Glomgold are racing to see who will be the eventual owner of Aladdin's Lamb, the Djinni is busying viewing TV at Manor McDuck, where he is clearly seen watching Godzilla blast Anguirus with his heat ray.

Program: Dragon Ball  Reference: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) Episode/Sketch: Tail's Tale Air Date: January 13th, 1988 During their fight in the semi-finals at the World Martial Arts Tournament, Krillin fools Goku and gets in a cheap shot, which leads them into another furious bout. After Krillin hits him again, Goku disappears. As Krillin tries to detect Goku's quickly changing position, King Ghidorah can be seen standing amidst other spectators in the crowd.

Program: Patlabor: The Mobile Police  Reference: Godzilla (1954) Episode/Sketch: The 450 Million Year Old Trap Air Date: July 25, 1988 In this episode of the original Patlabor OVA series the Patlabor patrol has to deal with a mutant sea monster created by a made scientist named Dr. Hirata with several nods to Godzilla including Hirata resembling Dr. Serizawa, the roar of the original Godzilla being used between intermissions of flawed ideas to flush the monster out, and Mikiyasu uses an Oxygen Destroyer imitation filled with dry ice (with Asuma catching the reference). The false Oxygen Destroyer wakes up the sea monster who slightly resembles Gaira.

Program: Roseanne  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Various Air Date: ~ October 18th, 1988 – May 21th, 1997 The famous Godzilla action figure that decorated the background of the living room set for much of the show's run (October 18th, 1988 through May 21th, 1997) can be found in the top left hand corner of the accopmanying still. Near the end of the series' run, Roseanne (in a fit of rage) hurls the hapless toy into the screen of the family television.

Program: Full House  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: D.J.'s First Horse Air Date: November 4th, 1988 Jesse Katsopolis returns from a date with Becky. After attempting with futility to inflate Michelle's new toy (a blow-up Godzilla doll) he unsuccessfully attempts to schedule another date. She jokes: "it'll take you all weekend to blow up Godzilla." He looks at the doll and retorts, "I'll have dinner with you; come on, let's go eat Tokyo."

Program: Gunbuster  Reference: My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Episode/Sketch: Please!! Time Enough for Love! Air Date: July 7th, 1989 A picture of Totoro can be seen in this episode of Gunbuster, along with another Miyazaki classic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984).

Program: Mystery Science Theater 3000  Reference: Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) Episode/Sketch: Episode 212, Godzilla vs. Megalon Air Date: January 19th, 1991 In this early episode of the movie-mocking program Mystery Science Theater 3000, Dr. Forrestor sends Joel, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot the 1973 Toho film Godzilla vs. Megalon. Joel and the bots have a fun time picking apart the special effects and the movie's English-dubbed dialogue. Two skits performed by the characters directly mock the film, including a comedic "translation" of Jet Jaguar's theme song.

Program: Mystery Science Theater 3000  Reference: Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) Episode/Sketch: Episode 213, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster Air Date: February 2nd, 1991 Mystery Science Theater 3000's second season came to a close with Joel and his robot companions riffing on Toho's Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966). This episode features a neat jazz ditty performed by Joel in an attempt to explain to the bots just who Godzilla is and how he came to be. Another segment has Tom and Crow making fun of Mothra's twin fairies until Mothra shows up. Mothra is voiced by future series host Mike Nelson. As Godzilla plunges into the ocean at the film's end, the guys on the Satellite of Love note that they've already seen this. Although they don't mention it by name, this is an obvious reference to the scene's re-use in Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973), which was the featured movie in the previous episode.

Program: Mystery Science Theater 3000  Reference: Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) Episode/Sketch: Various Air Date: October 10th, 1991 to October 23rd, 1991 A two-second clip of Godzilla's tail slide from "Episode 212, Godzilla vs. Megalon" was shown in the show's introductory sequence from "Episode 317, Viking Women vs. the Sea Serpent" until "Episode 512, Mitchell".

Program: this is MST 3K  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: N/A (Television Special) Air Date: November 14th, 1992 In this short documentary about the cult television show, viewers are treated to several glimpses of the legendary writing room where the show's writers would come up with the 700+ jokes for each episode. Decorating the walls are posters for Toho's "Godzilla on Monster Island" (aka Godzilla vs. Gigan [1972]) and "Godzilla vs. Cosmic Monster" (aka Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla [1974]). Kaiju fans will also note that "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" (aka Ebirah, Horror of the Deep [1966]) and Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) were both featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 in early 1991. Furthermore, writer and performer Trace Beaulieu mentions that movies with "big, dumb rubber monsters" are preferred by the writers, which is obviously a reference to the several kaiju films featured in the early days of the show.

Program: Animaniacs  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Disasterpiece Theater Air Date: October 19th, 1993 In a pre-opening credits parody of Masterpiece Theater, series regular Yakko introduces a series of destructive events culminating in the appearance of Godzilla, who, after delivering his distinctive roar, proceeds to inundate the screen in a wall of flame.

Program: Animaniacs  Reference: Godzilla (1954) Episode/Sketch: Sir Yaksalot Air Date: October 21st, 1993 A dragon is terrorizing a medieval town, and the Warner Brothers (and the Warner Sister) are called in by the king to deal with the situation. The Warners suggest consulting the war room, and the cartoon cuts to a high tech facility where several people are sitting round a large, circular table. A Japanese general and scientist (whose voices are out of sync) are present, along with Doctor Strangelove and Perry Mason (the television lawyer made famous by Raymond Burr, who appeared in the Americanized version of Godzilla (1954), known as Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956)). The intended parody of the original Godzilla film is evident.

Program: Animaniacs  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: The Warners and the Beanstalk Air Date: February 10th, 1994 Toward the end of the first season of Animaniacs, there is a sketch that's a mix of Jack and the Beanstalk and Green Eggs and Ham, as the Warners are chased by a giant version of Ralph who tries to eat them. The Warners try to convince him to eat gold eggs and meat instead. After two previous attemps, they are telaported to Japan where Wacko says "would you could you in Japan?" and Yacko adds"with Godzilla and Rodan?". The daikaiju duo, looking only vaguely like their movie counterparts, appear and snuggle up to Ralph, but he is not pleased and retorts "I would not could not in Japan with Godzilla and Rodan!" the angry kaiju attack Ralph and send him packing.

Program: The Simpsons  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: Lisa on Ice Air Date: November 13th, 1994 Lisa is in danger of failing PE, so she joins a children's hockey league. Lisa fears that if she ever receives an "F", it could blemish her record forever as she fantasizes that in the future, the Presidency of the United States is immediately revoked during her inauguration when a reporter exposes her 2nd grade "F" in PE. The official sentences Lisa to "A Lifetime of Horror on Monster Island", reassuring her that it is only a name. Cut to her and other hapless humans fleeing in terror from Gamera, Rodan, and Mothra, as someone matter-of-factly states, "It's not really an island, its a peninsula".

Program: The Critic  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Siskel & Ebert & Jay & Alice Air Date: March 12th, 1995 Critic Jay Sherman shows clips from films that the Oscars overlooked, which includes a movie about a deaf Godzilla.

Program: Pinky and the Brain  Reference: Godzilla (1954) Episode/Sketch: Tokyo Grows Air Date: September 17th, 1995 A spoof on Godzilla, King of the Monsters, this episode features a plethora of subtle and not-so-subtle nods to the original classic; the most famous being the hilariously deadpan "Yes, I see..." cutaways with a Raymond Burr parody.

Program: Seinfeld  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: The Nap Air Date: April 10, 1997 When Mr. Steinbrenner enters George's office and hears the ticking of an alarm clock, he calls in the bomb squad because he thinks an explosive device is planted underneath George's desk. The bomb squad sends in a vehicle equipped with a camera to investigate. The vehicle moves up close to the Godzilla figurine behind George's desk, to which Mr. Steinbrenner exclaims, "What's that thing straight up ahead?! Is it anything?! Is it Mothra?!"

Program: Godzilla, King of the Monsters (BBC Documentary)  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: N/A (Television Special) Air Date: ~ May 16th, 1998 Back in 1998, the BBC dedicated a night to giant monsters to coincide with the release of GODZILLA (1998). They showed King Kong (1976) and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), but the highlight of the evening was a special documentary covering the story of Godzilla's background and career. It lasted about 45 minutes and featured interviews with Jun Fukuda, Kenji Sahara and Kimi Honda amongst others.

Program: CBS News: Saturday Morning  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: N/A Air Date: May 16th, 1998 Prior to the premiere of the American Godzilla movie, CBS' Saturday morning show hosted a segment that featured the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000. A teaser trailer of the new movie and general Godzilla trivia were featured as Mike and the robots cracked wise with anchorman Russ Mitchell.

Program: Bill Nye the Science Guy  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Comets and Meteors Air Date: May 16th, 1998 In this popular educational kid's show, a Godzilla film parody is made at the very beginning, using a Godzilla knock-off called "Godzilla vs the Comet". In the video, a comet is used to stop the giant monster.

Program: The PJs  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Rich Man, Porn Man Air Date: February 2nd, 1999 As the community watches a zombie movie in a dilapidated movie theater, the movie reel breaks and everyone complains. To prevent everyone from leaving, Thurgood uses his hands to produce amazingly realistic shadow puppets of Godzilla emitting flames, destroying a building, and even roaring. In another shot, Godzilla fights a rabbit head, much in the style of a kaiju movie. To add to the spoof, Jimmy screams "Godzilla!"

Program: The Simpsons  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: 30 Minutes Over Tokyo Air Date: May 16th, 1999 As the Simpson family departs from Tokyo via airplane, a sudden attack by four famous kaiju prompts routine assurances by an unfazed pilot. Upon their escape, the scene reveals Gamera, Rodan, Mothra, and Godzilla roaring into the sky. After a failed attempt at chucking a nearby tank at the shrinking jet, Godzilla kicks a tree in disgust.

Program: Olive, the Other Reindeer  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: N/A (Television Special) Air Date: December 17, 1999 During the musical number "Merry Christmas After All", Olive, Santa, and the reindeer deliver presents across the globe. When they visit Tokyo, "Ultraman" and "Godzilla" make a brief cameo appearance, dancing to the tune of the music.

Program: The Simpsons  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: Faith Off Air Date: January 16, 2000 In the 237th episode of the The Simpsons, Homer is coming up with a design for a homecoming float, as he quickly draws out Godzilla and Superman fighting. Lisa responds, "I think Godzilla is much bigger than Superman."

The first features Homer as Paul Bunyan; however, the story is altered to include new scenes, such as Paul Bunyan's battle with Rodan. Lisa points out that this never happened in the original story, and goes on to ramble about all the inconsistencies in Paul Bunyan's size, to which the homeless man simply replies, “Who's telling this story, you or me?”

Program: Futurama  Reference: Godzilla Series (-) Episode/Sketch: The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings Air Date: August 10th, 2003 Fry, desperate to win Leela's heart, makes a deal with the Robot Devil. He has his hands cut off and replaced with the Robot Devil's so he can play his holophoner (an extremely difficult to play instrument that can project images when played correctly) in a concert. At one point an image of Fry Bender & Leela is displayed with Godzilla, and Bender exclaims on an operatic signing voice "Oh no! It's Godzilla!", to which the Real bender in the audience replies "That's funny..I don't remember fighting Godzilla".

Stewart then mentions that next time "Godzilla might not be there to defend us", before looking at the photo to say that she's being turned around so "Mothra can look up her skirt". Program: Ultraman Max  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: The Prophesy of Varaji Air Date: September 10th, 2005 This episode, directed by Shusuke Kaneko, starts off with two children clashing two action figures together, namely Gamera from Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999) and Godzilla from Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) (both of which were also directed by Kaneko) yelling at each other "Godzilla is stronger" "No, Gamera is stronger" until their playing is interrupted by the onslaught of classic Ultraman monster, Antlar.

Program: Pani Poni Dash  Reference: Kaiju Movies (-) Episode/Sketch: A Wide Mas Will Know Not to Approach Danger Air Date: November 14th, 2005 In the prologue for this episode, two minor characters (Kurusu and Serizawa) square off in the school hallway wearing costumes. Kurusu is wearing a Godzilla costume, and a Type 66 Maser Beam Tank, Gaos, and Viras also make very brief appearances. It is likely a Bandai's large scale 1991 figure, or possibly an Horizon Godzilla figure. Whichever one it is, it is clearly customized with a green coating.

Program: Mythbusters  Reference: The Mysterians (1957) Episode/Sketch: Car vs. Rain Air Date: June 17th, 2009 On this episode of Mythbusters, Kari, Tory, and Scottie try to pop a house full of popcorn based on the myth of heating kernels with a laser. During Tory's talk with laser researcher Karel Urbanek, three clips featuring lasers are shown, the last one being the Markalite Cannon vs. the Mysterian Dome scene from The Mysterians (1957). It should be noted that these clips were shown in black-and-white format for comical reasons.
