The Australian Parkinson’s Genetics Study has uncovered substantial differences in how Parkinson’s manifests and progresses across men and women, highlighting the need for more personalised approaches to prevention, diagnosis and care.
The study found:
* Women were more likely to experience falls, reported higher rates of pain, depression and anxiety * Men were more likely to report memory changes, along with higher rates of cognitive impairment and REM sleep behaviour disorder

Shake It Up CEO Vicki Miller said, "Seeing this study grow to become the largest active Parkinson’s cohort in the world is extraordinary, and it’s a testament to the generosity of the thousands of Australians who gave their time to participate. This is exactly the kind of bold, ambitious research our community needs.”

Dr. Albornoz's most recent research, funded by Shake It Up, showed the significant potential of a new-generation treatment to block inflammation in the brain, improve motor function and slow and stop the progression of Parkinson's.
Support high-impact research projects just like this one, by fundraising or donating to our Brisbane Marathon participants as they race towards a cure. 100% of every donation supports research.

At Shake It Up, our mission has always been to accelerate innovative research and better treatments for Parkinson’s – not only to manage symptoms, but to slow and stop the disease.
Known as ‘Disease-modifying Therapies‘, these treatments are not a reality yet – but they are closer than ever. Of the more than 170 Parkinson’s therapies that are currently in or nearing human trials, more than half are disease-modifying.

Our partner The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research describes these therapies as “the greatest unmet need for people with Parkinson’s” and highlights the reasons we should all feel optimistic that we’re moving closer to them. Below we highlight the key insights they share about disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) and resources to learn more.

During Parkinson’s Awareness Month, thousands of Australians came together to put Parkinson’s disease on the national radar, and raise more than $760,000 that will go directly to cutting-edge research.
From pancakes and pizza parties, to marathons and mountain climbs, our incredible Shake It Up community shared stories, started conversations and took huge steps to propel us closer to a cure.
