Anatomy and physiology teach that feedback to the central nervous system comes largely from Golgi tendon organs,
Pacinian corpuscles, and Ruffini nerve endings.
(2) FA mechanoreceptors can be divided into Meissner corpuscles and
Pacinian corpuscles, being the first one related to low (30 Hz) and the later one to high (200 Hz) vibration frequencies.
Basic neurophysiological studies have shown that vibration can alter sensory and motor function by mostly activating the primary spindle endings, although secondary spindle endings, such as Golgi tendon organs,
Pacinian, and Meissner corpuscles can also be activated [1].
In the dermis, there are Ruffini endings and
Pacinian corpuscles in a glabrous (or hairless) skin, whereas there is a complex combination of mechanoreceptors and their associated nerves and hair follicle receptors in a hairy skin [23, 24].
There are more touch and pressure receptors such as Meissner's corpuscles,
Pacinian corpuscles, Merkel's disks, and Ruffini's corpuscles under the skin of the palm than under the skin of the dorsal part of the hand.
The ACL also has a proprioceptive function, and it has been shown to contain several mechanoreceptors, including
Pacinian and Ruffini corpuscles.
Histopathology revealed proliferation of fibrous connective tissue accompanied with whorled structures
Pacinian bodies that showed no sign of malignancy.
Vibration excites
Pacinian corpuscles, and these receptors convey their information through gracile and cuneate fascicles to higher centers.
Somatosensory stimulation can be applied with a small vibrator systematically along the lateral surfaces of the fingers where Merkel disc and
Pacinian corpuscles are abundant (see Figure 1).
