muscaria mushrooms can contain ibotenic acid and
muscimol, which are structurally similar to glutamate and gamma-Aminobutyric acid, respectively; ibotenic acid is capable of producing central nervous system excitation (e.g., hallucinations, agitation, or seizures), and
muscimol causes central nervous system depression (1).
Activation of GABA(A) receptors by taurine and
muscimol blocks the neurotoxicity of beta-amyloid in rat hippocampal and cortical neurons.
In postsynaptic buccal cells, B34 and B40 produce chloride-mediated rapid inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) that are desensitized by GABA and the [GABA.sub.A] agonist
muscimol, blocked by the [GABA.sub.A] antagonists picrotoxin and bicuculline, and augmented by the GABA uptake inhibitor nipecotic acid (Jing et al., 2003).
Richard adds: "As well as being addicted to every substance on the planet, he's now addicted to
muscimol juice; when reindeer have eaten fungi and then they pee, and they collect the pee.

Finally came a psychedelic mushroom containing a toxin called
muscimol, which in limited doses has the effect of sharpening the senses and increasing one's ability to focus.
Effects of linalool on [(3) H] MK801 and [(3) H]
muscimol binding in mouse cortical membranes.
For inhibiting neuronal activity in whole brain regions, agents such as the GABA agonist
muscimol have been used [37, 38] resulting in a loss of motor function, indicating a causal relationship between anatomy and behavior.
