Irresolvability

Put simply, Catherine's behavior is better read as a studied response to the irresolvability between the ideals and realities of wartime nursing than as female foolishness.

This unknowability, irresolvability lingers in a suspended relationship to hysteria.

The delineative-associative tension is rather an unappreciated limit or, from another perspective, virtue of the nature of citizenship, one with which citizenship theory needs to (and can) come to terms as a constitutive feature of its subject: citizenship can provide the site for contesting who belongs and who does not, but it cannot resolve the ground of membership, and citizenship relies on and holds open that permanent irresolvability in order to allow (and indeed make it necessary for) citizens to assert their membership to each other and to articulate, challenge, and restructure society's unstable terrain of belonging in the process.
