THERE was no chance Kevin Calcutt would swallow the
common sole he landed during South Shields' match.
These fishes are highly prized for their flesh and "
Common Sole" or "Dover Sole" is the one most sought after.
The two organisations particularly question the quota reductions proposed for the following species: anglerfish (-20% to -38%); blue ling (-20%); cod (-20% to -25%);
common sole (-20% to -80%); haddock (-20% to -55%); hake (-32%); herring (-18% to -20%); megrims (-20% to -40%); Norway lobster (-18% to -21%); plaice (-19% to -36%); pollack, saithe, sole, sprat and whiting (-20%).
The data of wild
common sole (Solea solea) was obtained from fish population maintained under culture conditions.
An additional data set (Table 1) was also available from an annual egg production survey of Atlantic cod, European plaice, and
common sole biomass (Armstrong et al., 2001) to assess whether down regulation also occurs in other species with a similar fecundity development process.
An unusual species for our area - a 2lb 7oz
common sole - was taken by Kevin O'Hara from Seahampier.
Aspergillus fungus is the most
common sole pathogen or copathogen, occurring in approximately 87% of cases.
The Tyne piers have given mixed bags of flounder, plaice, dab, and odd codling and
common sole with plenty of mackerel and herring showing on some tides, most matches being won with bags of no more than 5-7lb.
Stocks in the North-East Atlantic, which are no longer considered over-exploited, are: anglerfish (off Portugal and the Atlantic cost of Spain); blue whiting (all areas);
common sole (Skagerrak, Kattegat, Baltic Sea, Western Channel and Celtic Sea); haddock (North Sea, Rockall, West of Scotland); herring (North Sea, Celtic Sea, Bothnian Sea); horse mackerel (Western aarea - from Cantabrian Sea to Northern North Sea); megrims (off Portugal and the Atlantic coast of Spain); Norway lobster (Skagerrak, Kattegat, North Sea of Fladen Ground, West of Scotland, Celtic Sea and Irish Sea); plaice (North Sea); cod (Eastern Baltic Sea) and spurdog (North-East Atlantic).
The record went to Dean Buck who landed a specimen
common sole of 3-10-0 from the Spiles at Seaham.
Outside this zone, catches of
common sole will be reduced by 15 to 25%, depending on the zone.
