In the marine environment, cholesterol and sterols with 27 carbons ([C.sub.27]) are predominant in zooplankton, invertebrates and vertebrates, while phytoplankton and seaweeds may synthesize a wide range of sterols including large quantities of phytosterols, which may have 28 carbons ([C.sub.28]), (e.g., brassicasterol [24-methylcholesta-5,22E-dien-3[beta]-ol], 24-methylene cholesterol, campesterol [24-methylcholest-5-en-3[beta]-ol] (Huang & Meinschein, 1979; Volkman, 1986; Kerr & Baker, 1991), or 29 carbons ([C.sub.29]) (mainly [beta]-sitosterol [24-ethylcholest-5-en-3[beta]-ol] (Huang & Meinschein, 1976, 1979; Volkman, 1986).
They detected presence of higher level of ^sitosterol as compared to other sterols like campesterol and stigmasterol.
Compared to controls, beta-sitosterol, as well as another phytosterol known as campesterol, inhibited growth of the prostate cancer cells by 70% and 14%, respectively.
This analysis should include not only cholesterol and its precursors, but also plant sterols such as sitosterol and campesterol, and cholesterol oxidation products.
Quantification was based on the peak area at 210 nm for all substances (sitosterol 3-O-[beta]-glucoside /eleutheroside A/, [beta-sitosterol, campesterol, brassicasterol).
They have also been found to contain triacontanol, tetratriacontanic acid, z-tritriacontanone, sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol. Fruits also contain the gluco-alkaloid, solasonine, sterolin (sitesterol-D-glucoside), protein, fat and minerals (Yuanyuan et al., 2009).
populnea crude barkwood extract resulted in isolation and/or identification of steroids (stigmasterol, campesterol, [beta]-sitosterol) and triterpenes (populnoic acid, methyl populnonate, epitaraxerol, [beta]-amirine, lupeol acetate, [beta]-friedalanol and friedelin) (Andrade, 2005).
The plant sterols occurring most frequently in nature are sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol.
Furthermore, the chocolates enriched with Phytosterols significantly increased both plasma sitosterol (+95.8%) and campesterol (+64.1%) levels, compared with the placebo chocolate group.
The major phytosterols are [Beta]-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol.
