OTHERSIDE (www.othersidespec.com) is a quarterly magazine of speculative fiction, poetry, and art by 2SLGBTQIA+ authors and artists. Inspired by José Esteban Muñoz’s definition of queerness as “an insistence on potentiality or concrete possibility for another world,” we reject the present. Instead, we dream of a future we call the otherside: a future defined by possibility OTHERSIDE is published by Hybris Press, a literary press for queer voices founded in 2025 by V.M. Ayala, Ash Vale, and M.R. Robinson. Why Patreon? All the work we publish will eventually be available to read for free on our site—but we believe strongly in paying writers and artists for their work. We depend on our subscribers to help us do so. In a climate where politicians and big tech companies are determined to make it as hard as possible to find and support queer voices, Patreon lets us reach our community directly. Like many new SFF magazines, we raised initial funds via Kickstarter. However, Kickstarter is not a sustainable funding model, particularly when it comes to stretch goals like pay raises or an increased word count. Patreon offers a more sustainable way for us to pursue these goals without tying our hopes to an all-or-nothing annual fundraiser. Already, our incredible patrons have smashed our initial goal of $185/month and allowed us to raise author pay to 8 cents/word and $50/poem!
