JBD upgrades its microLED process to utilize 12-inch reconstructed LED wafers

China-based microLED microdisplay developer JBD announced that it has completed a major upgrade of its microLED microdisplay mass-production architecture, and has shifted from 4-inch manufacturing to a 12-inch reconstructed wafer platform. This is a sort of medium step before full 12-inch LED epiwafer deposition.

JBD says that the current wafer mismatch between the 4-inch LED wafer and the 12-inch silicon backplane wafer has become a key factor limiting cost efficiency and substrate utilization. JBD has integrated its "die-to-carrier-to-wafer" bonding scheme into its volume production architecture. Under this process, small-format epitaxial wafers are diced into individual dies, followed by pre-bond inspection and sorting to identify and remove defective chips at an early stage. Qualified dies are then reconstituted onto a temporary 12-inch carrier substrate with high placement accuracy and uniformity, creating a reconstructed epitaxial wafer for subsequent wafer-level bonding with a matching 12-inch silicon backplane.

Innovision showed its latest microLED microdisplays at SID Displayweek 2026

MicroLED microdisplay developer Innovision showcased its latest microLED displays, along with a selection of monochrome and RG (red+green) polychrome waveguide modules, and headsets that utilize the company's displays, at SID Display Week 2026 last week.

Innovision SID Displayweek 2026 booth

The main products on display was the Chimo M06 microdisplay, a 0.06-inch microdisplay (the company says that this is the smallest microdisplay in production) that offers a 540x280 resolution (2.5 micron pitch), 240Hz refresh rate with red, green or blue versions. The company also demonstrated the Chimo M06E display engine based on this microdisplay. Chimo M06E achieves a compact lens volume of just 0.03cc and weighs only 0.08g. Compared to the previous generation's 0.15cc optical engine, this substantial reduction in volume frees up more space for AR glasses design, better meeting the demands of lightweight daily wearables.

Researchers show that growing Eu-doped GaN LEDs on a semipolar crystal plane dramatically improves the red light emission

Researchers at the The University of Osaka, in collaboration with Ritsumeikan University have shown how growing europium-doped gallium nitride (Eu-doped GaN) on a semipolar crystal plane dramatically improves red light emission.

Osaka University: Eu-doped GaN red LEDs

The researchers say that EU-doped GaN is a promising next-generation microLED material platform, as it provides narrow-linewidth, wavelength-stable red emission based on intra-4f-shell transitions of Eu ions. In this research, it was found that growing these on a semipolar crystal plane selectively promotes the formation of highly efficient Eu luminescent centers, resulting in red emission intensity more than 3.6 times higher than that of a conventionally grown material.

Is Samsung scaling-down its emissive microLED TV project, in favor of microLED-backllit LCDs, wearables and AR?

Samsung has been developing and supplying ultra-large-area tiled emissive microLED TVs, targeting both commercial/signage and residential applications for many years, and it has recently started to ship RGB microLED-backlit LCD TVs

Samsung R95H microLED RGB LCD TV

According to a report from Korea, the company is adjusting its microLED TV production business, looking to increase profitability and product popularity - which basically means that it is likely to focus less on ultra-large premium TVs, and more on consumer-level microLED backlit LCDs. It is clear that microLEDs are not yet ready to enable mass-produced emissive TVs, even at a premium, as prices are simply too high and there are many improvements and challenges to overcome before this is possible.

Trendforce projects that the microLED-based CPO market will emerge in 2028, reaching $848 million by 2030

TrendForce says that microLED-based optical communication, offering low power consumption and low error rates, is emerging as one of the three major short-distance, high-speed intra-rack transmission solutions for scale-up data center networks, alongside active electrical cables (AEC) and VCSEL-based near-packaged optics (VCSEL NPO).

The high demand for AI datacenter communication solutions, will drive fast growth, and Trendforce projects that microLED co-packaged optics (CPO) will start to scale up in the second half of 2028, and will quickly ramp up to $848 million by 2030.
