Alright, I'll say it first. I replaced Windows with Linux and KDE and I feel so much more efficient.

Sasha You'll notice my original post says nothing about lack of backups for Google Authenticator. I did not make a backup, and when my codes were lost, there was no way to recover.
So yes, my fault.. but I wonder how many others are in the same boat. Just pointing this out.
Yes, Google has a backup, and if you neglect or loose your personal backup.. no bueno.
Proton and other authenticators set 'automatic' backups, and allow for authentication on devices other than a cell phone.

Bradavon Yes. I'm looking at it now (running CachyOS). Exporting codes is easy (for backup or switching authenticators).

Google authenticator is trash. No desktop app, no way to recover from a lost or delete codes.
I switched to Proton authenticator that syncs between all my devices, and has auto backup.
I ditched Google Drive for a free open-source sync tool — and it’s not Nextcloud
