🎶 From Stage to Nation: Exploring the Cultural Power of Hometown Concerts 🇨🇦 We’re proud to highlight graduate research that explores how music, place, and collective memory shape Canadian identity. Our PhD scholar Christine Rose Cooling, in York University’s Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture, examines hometown concerts as moments where artists and audiences come together in shared experiences of national pride and recognition. Drawing on lived experience and cultural analysis, her work shows how these performances extend beyond entertainment—revealing how Canadian‑ness is negotiated through music, memory, and cultural policy. Supervised by Professor Anne MacLennan, Cooling’s interdisciplinary research bridges personal experience with media history and policy. Cooling’s research reflects York University’s commitment to connecting culture, community, and national identity. 🤖 Exploring Humour, Technology & Human Connection 💬 We’re proud to spotlight graduate scholars whose research challenges how emerging technologies shape human interaction. York University PhD scholar Hana Holubec is examining how humour and laughter—dynamic, cultural, and deeply human behaviours—are being rendered technological through artificial intelligence and social robotics. As a trainee with York‑led Connected Minds, Holubec’s research explores how AI systems and social robots are programmed to imitate humour and laughter, and whose expressions are being prioritized—or excluded—in the process. Supervised by Professor Alison Harvey, her work asks critical questions about ethics, inclusion, and the social impact of communicative AI. Holubec’s work highlights York University’s commitment to research that brings humanities‑based insight into technological innovation—ensuring the future of AI is shaped with care, context, and cultural awareness. 🌍 Advancing Global Health Through Graduate Leadership 🤝 We’re proud to spotlight graduate scholars whose achievements reflect the power of international collaboration and community‑driven impact. Our PhD alumnus Milipaak Japiong, PhD, has become the first PhD graduate of York University’s international nursing partnership with the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho, Ghana. As part of the ASCEND program at York initiative, Japiong completed his doctoral studies in nursing under the supervision of Christine Kurtz Landy, professor in York’s School of Nursing. His research examined barriers to accessing hemodialysis in low‑resource settings, with a focus on identifying practical, actionable solutions to improve care for people living with chronic illness. Japiong’s milestone is both a personal achievement and a shared success—strengthening graduate nursing education in Ghana, advancing global health equity, and reflecting York University’s commitment to mentorship, and building meaningful international partnerships.
