For people in Ireland and Britain, the type of destructive wildfires that ravage southern Europe each summer can seem like a distant problem. But these fires are not confined to the dry Mediterranean landscapes of Spain, Portugal and Greece. In recent years, they have started to extend into regions more commonly associated with rain-soaked hills and bogs. We tend to think of heatwaves as a health crisis – almost 490,000 people die from heat globally each year . But this doesn’t account for the destructive effects of extreme heat on the everyday lives of women in ways that don’t show up in mortality statistics. This research review, which looks at examples across Oceania, Africa and Asia finds that the people who are forced to adapt to the greatest extent are the ones that climate policies ignore the most. Researchers measured the Great Pyramid of Giza’s vibrations in ambient conditions. They found that its natural frequencies – the frequencies at which it “prefers” to vibrate – are mostly between about 2.0 and 2.6 hertz (cycles per second). The surrounding soil has a much lower dominant frequency, around 0.6Hz. Every structure has a natural rhythm. Push a child on a swing at the right moment and the motion grows; push at the wrong moment and little happens. Buildings and monuments behave similarly. If earthquake shaking matches a structure’s natural frequency, the motion can be amplified. This is called resonance, and it can be catastrophic. ⚠️ Are we ready? Epidemic diseases infect millions every year – and other disasters make the risk worse. Floods, earthquakes, and mass displacement stretch health systems, disrupt sanitation, and leave communities exposed. 🦠An epidemic is a disease outbreak affecting a region or population. When a new disease outbreak spreads globally, it becomes a pandemic. COVID-19 demonstrated how a pathogen can quickly cascade into a global disaster. 🏥Are we prepared for the next major outbreak, whatever form it takes? Preparedness means investing in resilient health infrastructure, early warning systems, hazard mapping, and national and local response plans – built and tested before they are needed. Wild year-to-year swings — from punishing hyperactive seasons to quiet years with little activity — could well become the norm for future Atlantic hurricane seasons, according to recent climate change research. Huge congratulations Armine Hayrapetyan, I would have loved to be in the room with all of you. If others wish to duplicate such a wonderful experience, contact UNDRR Rosalind Cook, Stop Disasters Game's master for Europe & Central Asia :-)
There is nothing quite like the energy in a classroom when students realize that "saving the world" is a lot harder and a lot more rewarding than it looks! 🤗🌎 Today I brought the UNDRR’s Stop Disasters! game into my Risk Management class at the Educational Complex of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the atmosphere was electric. Watching future specialists lean into their screens, deeply intrigued by the complex puzzles of urban planning and emergency preparedness, was truly inspiring. It wasn't just about the points; it was about the "aha!" moments. There was a wonderful, healthy competition as they raced to protect their virtual communities. You could hear the sudden hush when a strategy didn't go as planned, followed immediately by intense debates on what went wrong. “Should we have invested more in early warning systems or sea walls?” “Was the school placed in a high-risk zone?” 🧐 Seeing that level of passion, the genuine thrill of saving lives and the scientific curiosity to dissect their failures, reminds me why we teach. We aren't just sharing data; we are nurturing the next generation of resilient thinkers who understand that in disaster management, every decision counts. The most exciting was when one of the students finally managed to protect their community with 0 losses!!!! 🥹🥹🥹 A huge thank you to UNDRR for creating such a human, engaging way to tackle these vital lessons! 🌍✨ #StopDiasters #DRR #Resilience #RiskManagement #InnovationInEducation #MinistryOfInternalAffairs #FutureLeaders #SendaiFramework

By testing helium and carbon isotopes from geothermal springs along the Kafue Rift of Central Africa, scientists have detected changes in isotope ratios that reveal that the boundary has broken all the way through the Earth’s crust to the mantle, allowing fluids to escape the mantle and reach the surface. The Kafue Rift is part of the Southwest African Rift System, which runs from Tanzania to Namibia, which — if it continues to develop — could become a new plate boundary splitting Africa in half.
