In my experience, both the local partner candidates and the firm opening an office must have a meeting of the minds on how rates will increase Day 1 and 1, 2, and 3 years out from Day 1. The local partners need a granular year by year understanding of how their standard rate will increase and a willingness to sacrifice certain clients relationships, for the benefit of the opportunity as a whole. The firm opening an office needs a granular year by year understanding of what the partner's effective rate will likely be, i.e. what rate increases will the individual clients actually bear.
