Tucson recently added a third "cooltainer" to its growing heat relief network. These solar-powered, retrofitted shipping containers offer mobile cooling for residents during dangerous heat waves. The state has refurbished 18 shipping containers, with the Arizona Department of Administration operating two and distributing the rest to local partners across the state, including the Tohono O’odham Nation, Pima County and the city of Tucson. These are open to everyone and anyone who needs them, whether you just need relief on the way to or from visiting one of our agency offices, your AC went out at home, you are experiencing homelessness or any other reason Learn more about the Tuscon cooltainers: https://lnkd.in/g7CDZYwe #Cooltainer #TucsonAZ #StateOfArizona
This is a creative response to an urgent problem. My first reaction was: how could a metal container possibly stay cool in AZ summers? The retrofitting and solar design sound impressive. It'd be interesting to see how communities use these and what kind of impact data comes out of it.
