The discussion spans from rack-level dynamics to the aggregate load observed at the data center’s grid interconnection point, highlighting critical implications for power system planning and operational stability. Special focus is given to identifying the underlying causes and electrical signatures of LLM-induced power peaks and swings within data centers. To address the challenges posed by these pulsating loads, the webinar will discuss software-defined and grid-compatible mitigation solutions. Software-based strategies enable real-time shaping of power demand within the data center, helping reduce sudden load ramps and improve predictability. In parallel, grid-supportive technologies like supercapacitors (e-STATCOMs), short-term battery units, large-scale grid-forming battery energy storage systems (BESS), and hybrid systems offer fast-responding support at the point of interconnection. Together, these strategies form a layered mitigation framework that promotes both reliable data center operation and resilient power system performance.
