Consistency is key, even for women exercising during pregnancy, according to Dr. Elisabet Borsheim, professor of Pediatrics at the Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center. Borsheim shares tips for pregnant women to safely stay active during a recent discussion with ARS. Hear the full discussion at: https://lnkd.in/gPWmzJBT
About us
ARS enjoys deep-historic roots as the principal in-house research agency of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Federally-supported agricultural research dates back to the 1862 Organic Act, which established what is now the USDA. The Organic Act charged the then-Commissioner of Agriculture “To acquire and preserve… all information he can obtain by means of books and correspondences, and by practical and scientific experiments…” ARS was founded in 1963 with the vision of leading America towards a better future by fulfilling this charge through agricultural research and information. ARS employs 2000 scientists and post-docs at over 90 locations across the country. Collectively, our scientists are engaged in almost 700 cutting-edge research projects at any given moment. Projects range from how to reduce nitrate runoff on Midwest farms, to best practices for Honey Bee management. The information, technology, and improved techniques originating in the ARS scientific community have profound and wide-ranging impacts on all consumers domestic and abroad.

The USDA Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network develops sustainable agricultural practices through coordinated experiments in 18 locations across the United States. At the ARS Northern Plains site, scientists are exploring alternative grazing land methods like mob grazing, multi-species grazing, and prescribed fire to manage invasive Kentucky bluegrass. Their goal is to develop practices with economic and ecosystem benefits for range managers and farmers. For more info: https://loom.ly/7kBHQcU #WildfireAwarenessMonth

ARS researchers in Oxford, MS, are helping Americans live healthier lives. Peppers are packed with nutrients and popular in foods, on the grill, or as a snack. ARS researchers are finding the chemical compound in certain peppers, like the TigerPaw (pictured), may also reduce blood sugar levels. Their research is especially important in the fight against diabetes. https://loom.ly/-wzCOow #ScientificDiscoveries

Hello Sunshine -- ARS researchers are helping strawberry growers by turning to the sun to combat a strawberry fungus. On strawberry plants, powdery mildew appears as white powdery spots or fuzzy growth on both sides of leaves and on stems. If not controlled, the disease can cause a significant crop and economic loss. https://loom.ly/n54geLk #NationalStrawberryMonth

ARS scientists in Boise, Idaho, are employing prescribed cattle grazing as a management tool. This promotes ecological restoration and wildfire protection of western rangelands overrun by invasive and flammable grasses -- like cheatgrass and medusahead. https://loom.ly/PbVG-pQ #WildfireAwarenessMonth

American poultry farmers face a major challenge that’s hard to see and impossible to ignore: AMMONIA. High levels of ammonia can cause respiratory damage in poultry, slow bird growth, and create difficult conditions for farm workers. ARS researchers have created a patented Indoor Air Scrubber that reduces ammonia before it reaches the birds — supporting healthier flocks and more productive poultry farms.

During #NationalStrawberryMonth, watch ARS researchers team up with Frederick Community College in Frederick, Maryland, and Chef Mark Mills to create a tasty and easy-to-make strawberry cobbler. ARS Plant Geneticist Dr. Kim Lewers also talks about her research efforts to make the strawberry tastier, more disease-resistant, and able to last longer in storage. https://lnkd.in/eeNNQVBf

Have you ever purchased a package of red, ripe strawberries only to have them spoiled by gray fuzz a day or two after you bring them home? That unappetizing gray mold is caused by the fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea. Other common fungal diseases that damage strawberries include powdery mildew and anthracnose -- which both pose monetary and crop loss for strawberry growers. See how ARS scientists have been working with Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation to keep strawberries mold free: https://lnkd.in/eYvHDfUx #NationalStrawberryMonth
