Building peace in the minds of women and men

About us

UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on 16 November 1945. For this specialized United Nations agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication are the means to a far more ambitious goal : to build peace in the minds of women and men.

My visit to Thailand reaffirmed the breadth of UNESCO’s nearly eight-decade partnership with the country, and the shared ambition that continues to guide it. In Bangkok, a UNESCO Creative City of Design and UNESCO Learning City, I was deeply honoured to be received by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 2005. Her Royal Highness’s dedication to education and cultural diversity continues to inspire UNESCO’s work. I was grateful to meet Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and reaffirm UNESCO’s commitment to working hand in hand with Thailand across our mandate, from inclusive education to ethical artificial intelligence, culture, science and the environment. I also had the pleasure of meeting the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Education, Natural Resources and Environment, and Culture, to advance our shared priorities and turn them into concrete action and meaningful results. At Wat Pho, I saw culture in its most human form: memory, education and knowledge serving people every day. Its inscriptions, listed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, and its role in transmitting Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage, inscribed as Intangible Cultural Heritage, remind us that knowledge must remain alive and accessible to all. What inspired me most was meeting young people from across Asia and the Pacific at Chulalongkorn University. Their ideas were courageous, grounded and shaped by real experience. They are not waiting for transformation. They are already driving it. From the renewal of UNESCO’s partnership with the Equitable Education Fund to exchanges with the UN family, UNESCO colleagues and private sector leaders, this visit was about one goal: delivering lasting impact for people and communities. #ForThePeople

Some absences are invisible… until you look closer. UNESCO wants to showcase the unseen. Behind every stolen cultural object lies a missing story, a disrupted memory and a community deprived of part of its identity. UNESCO’s Virtual Museum of Stolen Cultural Objects shines a light on what has been taken, bringing together testimonies, histories and objects from around the world to raise awareness about the global fight against illicit trafficking. More than a digital platform, the Museum is a collective international effort to protect cultural heritage, support restitution and reconnect objects with the people and places they belong to. Since its launch, the Museum has welcomed more than 205,000 visitors, generated 1.6 million page views and over 4.4 million interactions worldwide. Explore the museum. See what should never disappear. https://museum.unesco.org/ With the generous support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Museums connect us through culture, heritage and shared stories. On #InternationalMuseumDay, UNESCO and International Council of Museums (ICOM) are joining forces to highlight the essential role museums play as places for dialogue, learning and exchange, where people and communities come together across generations and cultures. Under this year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” we recognise the power of museums to foster understanding, strengthen social cohesion and create opportunities for diverse perspectives to meet. At a time of rapid technological and social change, museums continue to evolve, embracing new opportunities while remaining places that preserve memory, encourage critical thinking and strengthen connections across communities. Because museums do more than preserve the past. They help shape more inclusive, informed and connected societies for the future. https://lnkd.in/exf842hV #InternationalMuseumDay #IMD2026 #UNESCO #ICOM

🇮🇩 In Bali, a youth-led movement has decided to tackle plastic pollution and rethink our relationship with single-use plastics. ♻️ Created by sisters Melati and Isabel Wijsen, Bye Bye Plastic Bags mobilises communities through education, awareness campaigns and collective action to reduce plastic waste and rethink everyday consumption. What began as a local movement has become a broader reflection on how citizen engagement, particularly among young people, can influence environmental behaviour and community action. 🌏 The initiative is part of #UNESCOGreenCitizens, which supports citizen-led projects working to protect biodiversity, restore ecosystems and strengthen resilience to climate change through UNESCO’s scientific networks and programmes. 👉 Discover the project: https://lnkd.in/etbihcPa This initiative is made possible thanks to our partner Klorane Botanical Foundation.

As quantum science advances rapidly, a critical question is emerging: who gets to participate in shaping the quantum future? UNESCO’s Global Report of the International Year of #QuantumScience and Technology 2025 highlights the risk of a widening divide in access, infrastructure and scientific capacity. Closing this gap requires global cooperation and shared investment in knowledge, education and innovation. Through the Global Quantum Initiative (2026–2028), #UNESCO is working to strengthen capacity, foster inclusive partnerships and promote responsible governance, helping ensure the quantum future is shaped by all, not a few. 👉 Explore the full report: https://lnkd.in/eBFwtCZx

Light drives scientific discovery, powering innovations and solutions that help shape our shared future. Women scientists play a vital role in advancing research in fields such as photonics and optics, yet they remain underrepresented across #STEM disciplines. On the International #DayOfLight, UNESCO continues to advance gender equality in science through initiatives such as the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards, which help strengthen the visibility, leadership and contributions of women researchers worldwide. By supporting diverse scientific voices, we help drive science forward for a more inclusive future. 🎥 Listen to Dr. Savanna Lloyd, PhD, 2024 Laureate of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Young Talent Award in the Caribbean, and discover more: https://lnkd.in/dRPJqYzU #WomenInScience Fondation L'Oréal

Gender parity in higher education enrolment is becoming a reality across much of the world. In 2024, there were 114 women enrolled in higher education for every 100 men globally. Regions such as Central and Southern Asia have made significant progress, moving from 68 women per 100 men in 2000 to near parity by 2023. Yet important disparities persist. Women remain underrepresented at doctoral level and occupy only around one quarter of senior leadership positions in academia. These figures show that access alone is not enough. Advancing gender equality in higher education also requires stronger representation in research, leadership and decision-making. UNESCO works with countries and partners to advance more inclusive higher education systems and support equal opportunities for women throughout academic and professional life. 👉 Find out more in #UNESCO’s Higher Education Global Trends Report: https://lnkd.in/e7HBhefP
