For pupils living in long-term poverty, also known as persistent disadvantage, it is often the norm to not pass their maths and English GCSEs. This can lead to poorer employment prospects. Lower lifetime earnings. Even their health can be impacted. They’re stuck in a cycle of poverty. Our research found 88 state-funded schools who are bucking the trend, with pupils facing persistent disadvantage outperforming the national average for non-disadvantaged pupils in GCSE English and Maths. But they are still the minority. The gap is a measure of a system that needs change. Visit our campaign page to learn more and get involved: https://lnkd.in/e__5BYeN

We had a fantastic time attending the Festival of Education. The event brought together educators from across the country for two days of inspiring professional development, discussion, and networking. We hosted two sessions led by our brilliant staff members on rethinking leadership in schools and teaching English texts in a more inclusive way. It was great to see many of our ambassadors and hear more about the incredible work they continue to do, both inside the classroom and beyond. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the Festival of Education for hosting such an energising event. 👏

What a fantastic day at Pride in London! 🏳️🌈 On Saturday, members of the Teach First community were proud to take part in Pride in London, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and standing alongside everyone working towards a more inclusive future. At Teach First, we believe every child deserves access to an excellent education, and that starts with creating classrooms and schools where every young person feels seen, valued, and able to be themselves. Representation matters. Inclusive teaching matters. We're proud to stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ people today and always. 🌈

Teach First CEO James Toop visited Early Years and Primary trainees at our school centred learning experience at Keyworth Primary School today. A huge thank you to staff across Gem Federation for hosting us and providing a fantastic opportunity for our trainees to observe and carry out their first teaching episodes. We’ve really enjoyed meeting staff and pupils this week both here and Bessemer Grange Primary School.

It was great to see Jon Andrews from the Education Policy Institute discuss persistent disadvantage during a parliamentary committee session last week. He echoed our recommendations that more investment should be allocated to pupils facing persistent disadvantage, including a new pupil premium top-up for this group. Yesterday, we joined the Education Policy Institute to bring together researchers, policymakers, school leaders, teachers, and, most importantly, young people for our Persistent Disadvantage Summit. More than a million pupils in the UK are growing up in long-term poverty, also known as persistent disadvantage. Their experiences, alongside the evidence, show why tackling this issue requires action across the whole education system. We heard from Claudenia Williams, Deputy Headteacher at Mulberry School for Girls, on how schools can help pupils experiencing persistent disadvantage to thrive. We also heard from members of the Fair Education Alliance Youth Steering Group, who shared the support that helped them succeed. The day concluded with discussions on the system change needed to tackle persistent disadvantage. Richard Simper from the Department for Education, Alison Eynon from Lift Schools, Ed Dorrell from Public First, Sir Kevan Collins from the Department for Education, and Pepe DiIasio from Association of School and College Leaders all shared valuable insights from across the education sector. By bringing together research, lived experience, and expertise, we can build a future where every child gets the education they deserve. We caught up with Amy Mills, Assistant Headteacher at Burnt Mill Academy, one of our partner schools. Amy said: “As a trust, and at Burnt Mill specifically, our mission is to smash through the barriers of the disadvantaged. So Teach First really aligns with that because the ethos at Teach First is also about supporting those young people that are most disadvantaged.” Partner with us today and welcome a Teach First trainee into your school this September: https://lnkd.in/gDsNBr3
