We are very happy to announce our recent collaboration with leading maritime intelligence provider Lloyd's List Intelligence, investigating sophisticated sanctions evasion techniques in the Gulf of Oman. The joint investigation reveals how #shadowfleet tankers are employing increasingly sophisticated #AIS manipulation methods to disguise ship-to-ship transfers and circumvent international sanctions monitoring. The analysis documents specific cases where sanctioned vessels like the VERNAL (IMO: 9207027) and CANARA (IMO: 9411331) conducted covert cargo transfers using advanced #spoofing techniques closely resembling normal sailing movements. SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, Theia, automatically penetrates sophisticated deception operations, tracking vessels even during extended AIS spoofing periods. This is crucial for understanding #sanctions evasion methods in one of the world's most strategically important waterways. Part 1 of 2: The FALCON (IMO 9014432), a 170-meter, apparently Cameroon-flagged #LPG tanker, is a repeat spoofing offender. Over the next two posts, we will look into how she manipulated her AIS location to collect LPG from two sanctioned regimes, #Russia and Iran, while attempting to avoid regulatory oversight by providing plausible deniability. Between the 25th and 31st of May 2025, SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, Theia, tracked the FALCON as she engaged in systematic location falsification in the Gulf of Finland. She transmitted legitimate AIS data until she entered Estonian waters on the 25th of May, when she began broadcasting false positions 50km northeast of Tallinn. In reality, she proceeded east into #Russian waters. Despite cloud coverage, Theia detected what was highly likely to be the vessel loading LPG at Ust-Luga port on the 28th of May. The operation was confirmed when the FALCON was imaged departing Luga Bay on the 31st of May while operating #AISdark, before resuming legitimate transmissions at 21:18 UTC the same day. Draft data entered by the crew corroborated the loading operation, increasing from 8.5 to 11.2 meters during the spoofing period, confirming substantial #cargo uptake. The vessel's destination also changed from "TALLINN" to "TURKEY," indicating the completion of her clandestine mission. The FALCON operates under significant compliance concerns, having been removed from the #Cameroon flag registry in August 2024, she continues to broadcast false registration credentials. Built in 1994, she has operated under five different names across multiple flag states while maintaining no International Group of P&I Clubs coverage or recorded #portstatecontrol inspections. This operation demonstrates the evolving sophistication of sanctions evasion tactics, where vessels coordinate precise spoofing patterns to obscure loading operations from international monitoring systems. Theia tracks tens of thousands of vessels daily, automatically analyzing more than 27 million km² of #satelliteimagery to provide the ground truth of vessel movements. Keep an eye out for Part 2, which details how the FALCON uses similar evasion tactics to collect sanctioned LPG from #Iran. #FALCON #AISspoofing #SanctionsEvasion #LPG #MaritimeSecurity #SynMax #Theia #SatelliteImagery #AISdark #WhyGuessWhenYouCanKnow

Over the last year (https://hubs.li/Q03GvxMp0), SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, Theia, has tracked the PYXIS OCEAN (IMO 9798856), a 229m bulk carrier operated by global commodities giant Cargill. In 2023, she was fitted with 'WindWings,' 37.5m high solid sails created by BAR Technologies. During her six-month testing period, the #WindWings saved an average of three tonnes of fuel per day. Now, we are very pleased to be tracking the BRANDS HATCH (IMO 1034199), the world's first Aframax #oiltanker equipped with wind-assisted propulsion technology. Built for UK shipping company Union Maritime Ltd. the vessel features three WindWing intelligent fiberglass sails, again created by BAR Technologies, which are projected to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 12% annually (equating to 5,000 tons of #carbonemissions under normal operating conditions). #Theia has comprehensively tracked the BRANDS HATCH throughout her extensive maiden commercial voyage. Departing from #Shanghai, China, on the 19th of June, she called at Huangdao, China, between the 24th and 27th of June before embarking on her intercontinental journey. The vessel transited through the Malacca Strait, around the Cape of Good Hope, and up the Portuguese coast before reversing course and passing through the Straits of Gibraltar on the 23rd of August. Following a ship-to-ship transfer with the GEMMA (IMO 9808314) on the 25th of August, she proceeded to Krakcha Port, Morocco, arriving on the 1st of September. Innovative, wind-assisted propulsion systems represent a growing trend in maritime #decarbonization efforts, and vessels like the BRANDS HATCH and PYXIS OCEAN demonstrate how traditional shipping methods can be enhanced with high-tech, #sustainable technologies. Theia continues monitoring vessels equipped with #innovative sail technology as they enter commercial service, automatically identifying these pioneering ships from a daily ingest of more than 27 million square kilometers of satellite imagery. It's exciting to see wind-assisted propulsion expanding from bulk carriers to tankers, and we look forward to tracking more vessels equipped with sail technology as the #maritime industry embraces these fuel-saving innovations. In May, the BOKA VANGUARD (IMO 9618783), the world's largest #semisubmersible heavy-lift vessel, completed the complex loading of the largest floating drydock ever built in Turkey at Yalova Shipyard, #Turkey. SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, #Theia, captured the impressive loading sequence as the 275-meter vessel maneuvered to collect the massive 17,300-tonne #drydock. The drydock was visible at #YalovaShipyard on the 23rd of May before the complex transfer operation commenced. By the 30th of May, Theia detected the drydock successfully loaded aboard the BOKA VANGUARD, with the vessel anchored and preparing for departure on the 31st of May. The loading process required the #BOKAVANGUARD to ballast down far enough that her main deck level was lower than the draft of the floating drydock, with four tugboats carefully positioning it at the stern, and took several days to ensure safe loading for the 13,500-nautical-mile journey to #SanDiego. One of the most challenging heavy-lift transports in recent #maritime history, the drydock measures 253 meters in length and 54 meters in width, making it too large to transport through the Panama Canal. As such, the vessel was forced to transit via #CapeHorn to deliver the drydock to General Dynamics NASSCO. Theia tracks tens of thousands of vessels, automatically analyzing more than 27 million km² of #satelliteimagery daily to provide the #groundtruth of shipping movements. Between late July and mid-August 2025, the ZHU HAI YUN (IMO 9947055), China's first autonomous drone mothership, conducted a systematic transit through the disputed South China Sea's #SpratlyIslands. SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, #Theia, detected and tracked the 88-meter vessel as she visited multiple contested reef complexes in the region. Her route included Irving Reef (29th-31st July), administered by the Philippines; Subi Reef (31st July-3rd August), where #China has constructed artificial islands and military facilities; and North Gaven Reef (3rd-4th August), part of the heavily developed Tizard Bank area. The vessel subsequently called at Union Banks (4th-8th August), a large atoll formation containing multiple contested features, before stopping at #MischiefReef (5th-8th August), one of the region's largest reclaimed areas featuring a 3,000-meter runway. Her mission concluded with a return visit to Union Banks and Northwest Investigator Reef (10th-16th August), also known as Fiery Cross Reef. The ZHU HAI YUN can deploy multiple air, sea, and submersible #drones, and, according to her builder, represents the "world's first intelligent unmanned system mothership" designed for autonomous maritime research operations. She can also be operated as part of a swarm. The vessel's systematic coverage of these disputed features reflects the evolving role of #autonomous platforms in maritime operations. All locations remain subject to overlapping territorial claims by China, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Theia tracks and images tens of thousands of vessels daily, automatically analyzing more than 27 million km² of #satelliteimagery to provide the ground truth of vessel movements across contested maritime regions.
