Over the last year (https://hubs.li/Q03GvxMp0), SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, Theia, has tracked the PYXIS OCEAN (IMO 9798856), a 229m bulk carrier operated by global commodities giant Cargill. In 2023, she was fitted with 'WindWings,' 37.5m high solid sails created by BAR Technologies. During her six-month testing period, the #WindWings saved an average of three tonnes of fuel per day.
Now, we are very pleased to be tracking the BRANDS HATCH (IMO 1034199), the world's first Aframax #oiltanker equipped with wind-assisted propulsion technology.
Built for UK shipping company Union Maritime Ltd. the vessel features three WindWing intelligent fiberglass sails, again created by BAR Technologies, which are projected to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 12% annually (equating to 5,000 tons of #carbonemissions under normal operating conditions).
#Theia has comprehensively tracked the BRANDS HATCH throughout her extensive maiden commercial voyage. Departing from #Shanghai, China, on the 19th of June, she called at Huangdao, China, between the 24th and 27th of June before embarking on her intercontinental journey. The vessel transited through the Malacca Strait, around the Cape of Good Hope, and up the Portuguese coast before reversing course and passing through the Straits of Gibraltar on the 23rd of August. Following a ship-to-ship transfer with the GEMMA (IMO 9808314) on the 25th of August, she proceeded to Krakcha Port, Morocco, arriving on the 1st of September.
Innovative, wind-assisted propulsion systems represent a growing trend in maritime #decarbonization efforts, and vessels like the BRANDS HATCH and PYXIS OCEAN demonstrate how traditional shipping methods can be enhanced with high-tech, #sustainable technologies.
Theia continues monitoring vessels equipped with #innovative sail technology as they enter commercial service, automatically identifying these pioneering ships from a daily ingest of more than 27 million square kilometers of satellite imagery.
It's exciting to see wind-assisted propulsion expanding from bulk carriers to tankers, and we look forward to tracking more vessels equipped with sail technology as the #maritime industry embraces these fuel-saving innovations.
