In 1936, Sun Valley Resort made history by installing the world’s first chairlift—an innovation that helped transform skiing from a niche pastime into the beloved sport it is today. ⛷️ Nearly 90 years later, Sun Valley continues to lead the way, this time in balancing outdoor recreation with ecological stewardship on Bald Mountain. After decades of forest decline and two major wildfires in 2007 and 2013, Bald Mountain faced increasing threats from bark beetles, dwarf mistletoe, and dense, fire-prone vegetation. To protect this iconic landscape, Sun Valley teamed up with the National Forest Foundation, USDA Forest Service, and dozens of other partners through the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project — a multi-year, landscape-scale initiative focused on restoring forest health, reducing wildfire risk, and preserving the mountain’s iconic recreational experience. How is it done? Through the use of innovative equipment like 78,000-lb Ponsse harvesters (or as my daughter calls them, BIG TRUCKS! 🛻), Miller Timber Services, Inc. crews carefully thin unhealthy forest stands. Crews then replant a diverse mix of native tree species to build long-term resilience. I had the opportunity to see this work in action last week and meet many of the people making it happen. Collaboration + innovation = a healthier future for National Forests.

Sun Valley Resort is one of a dozen or so ski areas in the western U.S. that is pulling way ahead of its peers in lift infrastructure and crowd management, delivering the sort of skier experience that's becoming increasingly tough to find in skiing's mainline zones of I-70 Colorado and the Wasatch. COO Pete Sonntag joins me (again) on the pod for an update on everything at this singular mountain (well, actually, there are two mountains...) https://lnkd.in/eurAVz7B

We’re proud to announce that Sun Valley Resort has received the NSAA Golden Eagle Climate Change Impact Award for our innovative geothermal snowmelt system at Warm Springs Lodge! By tapping into a nearby hot spring, we’ve eliminated the need for natural gas heating on the 21,000+ sq ft patio — cutting over 100 metric tons of CO2 annually. But that’s just the start. From solar panels on employee housing, to waste diversion, reforestation, and a vanpool program that saves over 130,000 vehicle miles each year, we're working across the resort to reduce our impact and protect the mountain we call home.
