We’re revisiting a resource from our own collection as part of SA History Month. This image from the 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦: 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 circa 1998 captures the hierarchy of controls in managing workplace risk. While hazard management approaches have become more refined (and the visuals have improved significantly beyond late 1990s cartoon-like graphics), the core principles of work health and safety remain unchanged. Strong foundations continue to shape safer workplaces today. Keep the fundamentals front of mind and stay up to date with current workplace safety information: https://ow.ly/xrZ050Z2vhy

Quad bikes continue to be a leading cause of death and serious injury in Australian workplaces, particularly in agriculture. Since 2011, there have been 245 quad bikes incidents in Australia and seven workplace fatalities involving the vehicles during 2024-25 in South Australia. Safe Work Australia is seeking feedback on options to improve safety, including protective devices, helmets, passenger limits and more. Having your say will shape the discussions on how quad bikes can be made safe to use for work around the country. Consultation closes 1 June 2026. Give feedback below ⬇️
245 people have died in quad bike related incidents in Australia since 2011. The majority of fatalities were the result of a collision or rollover and 43 of those killed were aged 19 or under. Safe Work Australia is seeking feedback on options to improve quad bike safety in the workplace. Regulatory options we are consulting on include: • requiring operator protective devices (OPDs) to be fitted on all quad bikes when used in the workplace • mandating helmets are worn on all quad bikes when used in the workplace • restricting the carrying of passengers on operator-only (type 1) quad bikes when used in the workplace, and • restricting the use of quad bikes in the workplace to 16 years of age and over. Non-regulatory options include: • improving quad bike data collection processes, and • conducting targeted quad bike safety communications activities. We also welcome stakeholder views on other options that could improve quad bike safety in the workplace. Visit Safe Work Australia’s Consultation Hub to read the consultation paper and share your thoughts by making a submission or completing the online questionnaire: https://lnkd.in/ejhQnVGJ The consultation is open until 11.59 pm (AEST), Monday 1 June 2026.

During SA History Month this May, we’re reflecting on how workplace safety has been communicated over time. This historical poster dated around 1950 to 1970 from the National Safety Council of Australia (now known as NSCA Foundation), encouraged workers to stop work and stay alert for hazards. While the design has changed, the core message remains the same. Awareness and risk prevention save lives. The campaign highlights three common and preventable workplace risks: 🔸 Falls from heights 🔸 Slips and trips 🔸 Roll-away vehicles You can actively spread awareness of these risks by downloading free campaign resources, including posters and social media content, and help reinforce safety messages with your teams, networks and worksites.
