Take a load off on Labor Day today with Moose, our September #TherapyDogOfTheMonth! Moose is a bloodhound with a love of swimming, hiking, sunbathing and of course, hogging the bed. He also has quite the refined palate, with filet mignon and cheese being his favorite snacks. His owner, Shelbi, recalls one of her favorite memories with Moose at Renown: “We ran into a nurse at Renown South Meadows, and she sat down on the ground and hugged Moose for over five minutes, quietly crying. Moose stayed calm and let her nuzzle into him until she was ready to let go. She told me it had been one of the hardest shifts of her life and that just hugging Moose gave her the strength to keep going. We love visiting patients and brightening their days, but we also cherish visiting our employees because sometimes, they need the dog’s love more than anyone.” #LaborDay

Firearm violence is a public health crisis. In fact, firearm-related injuries are now the leading cause of death among kids aged 1-19 across the country. Locally, our children's hospital has seen a growing number of firearm injuries in our pediatric trauma units. In northern Nevada, Renown Children's Hospital, Safe Kids Washoe County, Washoe County School District, Reno Police Department and other local partners are addressing this issue through a community-based initiative: Be SMART. The Be SMART framework is a national safety campaign designed to help parents, caregivers and communities practice responsible firearm ownership. And taking action is easy — watch this short video to learn the five key steps to being S-M-A-R-T for firearm violence prevention. #BeSMARTWeek
